Absolutely stunning knife. Scandi drop points have always been my favorite type of outdoor blade. Congrats to the lucky winner, I'm sure they will cherish it forever!

Damn wish I could think of someone in my life who'd actually appreciate it. I'm the only person I know who actually enjoys getting lost in the woods and uses a knife regularly. Hopefully whoever gets it appreciates it and puts it to good use. Great looking knife 👍

@simon8803 I usually just use a coldsteel bushman in the woods or a mora but would like a good basic bushcraft belt knife. Maybe I'll order one from you down the road. Me and my wife just signed on our first house today and will be closing in 30 days so money is a little tight at the moment lol

Is there a specific reason why you heat treated the blade before grinding the bevels?
@HoutmeyersP
@HoutmeyersP 2 жыл бұрын
I am not the video poster but i can answer your question.Some carbon in the outside layer(exposed to heat and oxigen) gets lost from the blade on heat treating.If you first grind in the bevels chances are that the cutting edge will not be as hard due to some carbon lost. A second reason could be that a thinner blade could more easely warp when it gets cooled down in the quench. Certainly very thin longer blades(example: kitchen/chefs knives) are known to warp easely....if the bevels are already ground in the warping becomes more severe.
@scottbluewaspknives2300
@scottbluewaspknives2300 2 жыл бұрын
@@HoutmeyersP thanks! I was thinking along the lines of your second reason. I was not aware of what you mentioned in the 1st part of your explanation.
@HoutmeyersP
@HoutmeyersP 2 жыл бұрын
@@scottbluewaspknives2300 If you start out with a high carbon steel ( with 0.85 -1% carbon) the loss in carbon wont be very obvious. In doing a file test your file still will skate of the steel just after hardening. If you however used a lower carbon content steel....you will get the impression that the steel did not harden properly. Many than repeat the heat treat...and loose even more carbon. Further to the inside of the knife the steel hardened fine. Its only the outside layer that could not get hard due to carbon loss. If you have allready ground in the bevels...there's no way to expose the hardened steel unless you grind the knife some smaller. Thats the reason ( another is the warping) why many leave enough meat on the edge when grinding the bevels before heat treat......some grind in the bevels after heat treat. If you ever plan on black/grey etching a blade that was fully ground to thickness with bevels allmost to a sharp edge you will find out that the steel does not darken uniformly in the etchant. Reason being some parts of steel that lost a bit more carbon wil not harden properly ....less hardened steel will remain brighter in color after the etch than the more hardened parts of the blade. If you are making damascus.... edge quenching is a no no if you want a high contrast overall etch. You could use this also to an advantage. High contrast hamons can be made on very high carbon steels ( 1% and up) that way ....the steel that is being covered using clay will cool slower than the uncovered steel if you only edge quench the uncovered parts. The covered steel remains softer and thus will not etch as dark...after fine sanding and etching you will see a difference in color at the line between covered and uncovered steel.
