Good times! Both performed well. I definitely prefer a full four finger grip on any knife, makes a huge difference as you both showed. Fine job! If you lock your elbow and lean in with your body weight it helps with feather sticks. 😉

that was a cool video! and kyles knife looks really handy. with the feathersticks, you might try reversing your method. instead of leading with the tip, lead with the choil area and let the tip trail. when I was a kid I did it the way you are doing it, it was a splintery piece of 2x2 or 2x4, my edge slipped, and since my hand was pushing towards the knife and the wood, it drove a pretty good sized splinter right into my hand. if you lead with the choil, your hand is pulling the blade forward, so if your edge slips, your hand just goes past the wood into the air and cant really get hurt. enjoy the knife!!

Ouch!!!! I have tried both methods and for me, it depends on the knife to see which way is most comfortable! Your knife did amazing Joe- best 1095 I have used thus far!!!!

That was a cool video. I wish everyone felt the same about poor heat treats. To many people just don't care. If we all cared about heat treat and HRC we would have many more great knives.

Nickie seemed to struggle with the short blade as well! In the cardboard, the extra length on the Calton knife definitely helped with the cutting!

I like the laid back style of testing, just seeing what the knives can do and checking the steel after!! Great video, I agree with Nickie about needing bigger knives lately, I love how pocketable small knives are but they’re sometimes not as useful! Haha

I know that the small knife was just to test S90V, but it shows how important handle desigh is. A handle that is comfortable and non fatiguing will result in having more control of the knife. Cuts will be easier, more accurate, and the knife will be safer.

Nice test. I have a Joe Calton necker in his pattern necker modeled after his mentor. It has a comfortable handle also and comes at 0.010” at the base. Thicker at the tip. Tempted to try his interpretation on Murray Carter style. I actually have one of Murray Carter’s apprentice blades in that style also. Supposed to be 63-64 HRC Superblue at “0.015 bte

Good comparison. I really dig 1095 personally and you can get em screaming sharp. Ive also got my Bugout in s90v and its an absolute beast of a steel. Fun video!

Softer steel are harder to sharpen is that true ?

For me- they have been more finicky. Because the burr flips back and forth as opposed to just falling off. It totally depends on the heat treat.
