I really like my 97, including the pull strength. If you hit something on the spine with a blade that size while working, it has a half stop and if it's hit hard enough to pass that, I'd rather it not have the additional help of gator snap strength to guillotine my fingers. Blade rap would also be much worse on a blade of that length with a stronger spring as well. The size and pattern is amazingly comfortable!

I just ordered this knife in the Gabon Ebony cover, and I'm so, soooo excited to get it. I went back and forth on getting it because of the "weaker" spring that everyone seems to be on about, but I decided that the chances of me actually piercing/stabbing something with it, are pretty slim. Thank you for this very thorough review of this knife. It was really helpful, and it pushed me to make my final decision. :)

Great video - I subscribed. I recently got the #97 Beavertail and am amazed at the level of workmanship. The blade itself is beautifully designed.

I'm lucky enough to have bought one in Sambar Stag, and your explanation of the history makes me like it even more because stag antler kind of belongs on a hunting knife. And no issues with an unpinned shield, because there isn't a shield! That said, I never had a glued shield fall out on any of my Cases (yet). Mine's beautifully made, my only gripe being the weak pull (between 3 and 4). I hear your view on the subject, but as I see it a big knife is made for heavier tasks, so needs a correspondingly stronger spring protection from closing in use. #23, another large pattern, has it plenty heavy enough (even on the locking version, when it's not needed), and my #46 Whaler (another large coke bottle) has it so stupid-strong as to be nearly unusable, so I'm not sensing much consistency in GEC's approach to pull strengths.

I have the beavertail and yellow rose versions. The beavertail has a pull of about 3. The yellow rose is a good 5. Both have great craftsmanship and are centered. Very cool pattern and I'd get another if I had the $.

Wow a 3! I've never had a 3 from GEC that I recall.

Thats really awesome.... I love that GEC made this. I think a Large slip joint is a lot of fun. I ended up buying the maroon micarta version. I think like the double pull, but i preferred it without the nail opening. Thanks for sharing this ... great looking knife.

Great looking version of a classic pattern! It is quite close to the venerable Cattaraugus "King of the Woods" coke bottle hunter. The only thing I don't like is the extra nail nick on the Northfield blades... Other than that, a real looker! Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for watching! The double pull isn't for everyone.

I've been thinking of getting this model, but in maroon micatra. I do like that jigged bone though..tough decision as to which one I like better.
@KnifeThoughts5 жыл бұрын
This particular one would have to be gotten on the secondary and would still be difficult to get, I think the micarta ones look great and you should go with one of those!

@@KnifeThoughts Although it won't be the collection group piece, there are still the regular ones in autumn jigged bone available. I still think I will end up with the maroon micarta though. I really like the looks of it. I went to dlt and ksf to try and decide which I wanted, and ended up grabbing the GEC Aqua camel bone toothpick instead, lol. Fell in love with it. Maybe next month Ill get the #97. That toothpick made my 3rd knife for this week, so I'm done for a few weeks now, Knife collecting is a sickness isn't it? lol.

They all looked nice. If I could get another one I'd get the Waynorth Cutlery one or one in stag or ebony.

Great review, as a newbie to traditional knives and not knowing shit about them I really appreciate your astute overview of this knife, in spite of not receiving a club knife I found this review to be very helpful in every aspect of this beautiful pattern, I went with the linen micarta so thanks again!

Hey Logan - new sub. I’ve been watching a lot of your videos lately as my interest in traditionals has come back in a big way. Thanks for all the great content. I’m still debating this pattern but I’m worried about the lighter springs. On a blade this large I prefer a strong pull. There’s a few of the Tidioute jigged bone versions left out there and I was wondering if you knew how the strength on those compare with the rest of the run. Thanks for any help 👍
@KnifeThoughts4 жыл бұрын
Hey there! Thanks for watching and following along. I have two different versions of jigged bone 97s. To be honest, the pull is probably what you’d call light for a big knife from GEC. Maybe 6ish. But it is snappy.

The AMKCA version? or another #97 Allegheny?

Would this be considered a Barlow with that large bolster?
@KnifeThoughts3 жыл бұрын
No, not traditionally. Supposedly a barlow’s bolster should be a third the length of the knife, but that doesn’t hold true for “granddaddy” Barlows, so 🤷♂️
