Only one of my GEC's, a Tidioute #13 has both the small pen blades rap against the backspring. I've sharpened it twice and still raps now unless I close it carefully. I'm thinking if I just keep on using it and sharpening it that rap will go away eventually. It is extremely annoying though.

Yeah I have blade rap and proud tips. I had some on my two #13s.

That secondary blade on the Lumber Jack is not "a pen blade".......it's a clip point. For opening blades on knives with strong backsprings, use 3 fingers along with your thumb......and place your thumb directly across from your middle finger.......makes opening much easier & more controlled. You'll never break another nail using this method. But here's the biggest tip for all traditional folders, and it's wise advice: We all love the snap of a quality folder when closing a blade........however, most of the old-timers will scold you for doing that, and for good reason: IT IS THE DIRECT CAUSE OF PIN CRACKS IN WOOD, BONE, AND EVEN SYNTHETIC HANDLES. When ya first buy a knife, by all means, allow the blades to snap shut to assure the quality & strength of the backsprings and good "walk & talk", but after that, keep holding the blade when closing & only release it when it's nearly shut to avoid slamming the blades shut. ( It's ok to allow blades to open with full force. ) You know that knife has great walk & talk, so ya don't have anything "to prove" to yourself or anyone else for that matter. Your knife handles will remain crack-free for life. EXAMPLE: I just acquired a gorgeous, grand old "Big Tobacco Congress" with rat-tail bolsters, made by the original New York Knife Co. This knife is anywhere between 143 and 163 yrs old!!! YET IT DOESN'T HAVE ANY PIN CRACKS WHATSOEVER IN THE BEAUTIFUL OLD PICK-BONE HANDLES, but all 4 blades have plenty of wear from decades of use. WHY? Because the original owner ( and any other owners afterwards ) knew NOT to allow the blades to slam shut. THAT is why this ancient knife still has bone handles in pristine condition. I also own over 220 Great Eastern Cutlery knives. It blows me away that more people don't know about the cause of pin cracks in knife handles. It also keeps any possible blade-rapping to a minimum........until you have honed the blade enough times via months or years of use, so that any potential blade rapping is completely gone. Lots of GEC knives left the factory with no horrendous nick in the cutting edge.....but owners who slam the blades shut cause it right off the bat. I'm actually quite surprised that GEC hasn't taught consumers how to properly close the blades of a traditional folder. Food for thought.........

From your descriptions, each of these four knives had various manufacturer produced issues? If I understand correctly, that is amazing. Thx for the video ;-)

What are store knives factory seconds?
@KnifeThoughts
@KnifeThoughts 6 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. GEC has also made knives that they call seconds, which were stamped with a "2". Store knives are stamped with an "S" and were originally, as I understand it, only sold in the factory store and still held a warranty on non cosmetic workmanship. Now, however, the store knives are sold by some online retailers at a slightly discounted rate and do not carry any warranty. The store knives have replaced the seconds, or at least the nomenclature has, as Bill has said he doesn't like to sell seconds.

Howdy Logan, I've been using knives for over half-century and I have not heard the term blade wrap. Can you tell me what that is or point me in the right direction, thanks?
@KnifeThoughts
@KnifeThoughts 6 жыл бұрын
Sure! I should have explained it more in the video. Blade rap is when the edge raps, or hits, against the backspring and damages the edge.
@bdh3949

Logan Stout Yes, thank you. I have had a couple of knives do just that. It ruins the knife in my view. One I replaced, the other I could not replace so I simply close the knife very gently but because it is a traditional it rubs anyway and needs a touch up daily when used.

It is one of the most frustrating and unacceptable issues in my opinion along with proud tips, and they go hand in hand and fixing one can lead to the other.

I passed on all the 44s with the bullet shield. I think it looks ridiculous with the size of the bullet shield. It should be small for such great material like cocobolo. Stag I will be getting. They do stand behind their knives although Bill Howard is definitely an introvert and Christine has been snippy at times but who cares. All I care is if they fix the knives. I think they could tighten up on quality control. The Rendezvous Knives. They should be perfect every time since there are only 50.
