Hello from Germany. The most beautiful knives come from our French neighbors, are definitely the knives from Laguiole. They make such beautiful knives that every steak is happy! But there are a few nice knives. My favorite knives behind Laguiole are the ones from Kershaw, especially the KAI 1460 Ken Onion
@markpowers78234 жыл бұрын
Truly some beautiful knives. Personally I carry a Case Cheetah, that my son bought me. I do like the smaller " gentleman's" knifes for every day carry. It works well for me. I do wish more makers made an ambidextrous knife. My son is left handed, and trying to get a good knife for him can be tough. Thanks for the video. I enjoyed it.

There are so many different designations for steel these days, I'd really like to see you do a chart and explain the pros & cons of each. Maybe rank them by cost, another by edge retention, another by corrosion resistances and maybe still another by brittleness or durability. And why don't we see knife manufactures using SAE, ASTM, or AISI codes that you would see if you were a welder going to a metal supplier for material?
@acid6urns Жыл бұрын
the last part is bc if they used those codes most people wouldn’t know anything about it, and it would be easier to get them confused. regular people aren’t likely to know the difference between 1080 and 1084 steel, whereas 20cv and say k390 definitely denotes a major difference somewhere, plus there’s the trademarking of the steel names. a lot of chinese steels have a uniform naming convention, like 2cr13, 5cr15mov, 7cr17mov, 8cr13mov, 9cr18mov, 10cr15mov etc

DCA is the perfect host. He's so thurough about every detail. I wasn't surprised to learn he's a custom knife maker. I'm learning so much w/every video! Definitely been bitten by the EDC bug & getting knife knowledgeable so I can feel confident in any future investments in nice knives. Been hesitant to invest in a more exspensive because I wasn't able to maintain a knife properly. DCAs instructions on each knife means I can get a nice knife that won't require a lot of maintenance so long as it's not used beyond its means. Like it wouldn't be wise to use a CEO for bushcraft tasks. Before I subscribed to your channel I didn't realize the difference. I knew the difference between a steak, butcher & bushcraft knives but that was the extent of it.

My gent knife is a Kershaw launch 6, a Benchmade SOCP, and depending on the task a Cold Steel Espada XL which will handle every larger job. One handed operation is my preferred choice. A full size Spiderco Military is only product I would consider from that brand but for over $200 I'd chose a Recon 1 for half the price

I'm in the UK as well, I find the wide blades on the UKPK to be a bit much for a "Gentelman's knife". Personally, I have the UK variety of the CKRT CEO. No spring assist or thumb stud (a nail nic instead) and a slightly shorter blade to make it sub 3", but I'm really happy with it. Hides very nicely in a pair of dress trousers pockets, or even a shirt pocket. Especially handy in the UK. I basically use it as my "Dress Knife" for going out.

Great video! I do own the Civivi Chronic Damascus blade, but I found it to be light & the carbon fiber laminate over the g10 handle ended up cheapening the overall appearance of that knife. I finally found what I was looking for in the Boker Plus Burnley Kwaiken mini flipper with the 3.15" D2 blade & solid twill contoured carbon fiber handles on the stainless frame. The blade is flush when closed & flipper action is a pleasant buttery smooth with a fantastic liner lock. I do, however, have to admit that the Chris Reeves Mnandi with the Beech handles is a nice looking knife as well.

Pop always referred to these as "formal" or "dress" knives. The kind of thing you can whip out to cut off a loose thread in front of a senator and he won't freak out and might even ask to see it kinda deal. Knives can definitely be stylish!
@dennishein28123 жыл бұрын
Yea, you didn’t carry your everyday knife to church or functions. You needed a nice clean one. Sometimes you noticed some dirt under your fingernail you missed or you had to trim a broken fingernail. If you needed to pick your teeth with it make damn sure your mom or wife didn’t see you do it. Generally it was used lightly and kept clean. It might even get called on to cut a steak on Sunday after church. Steak knives were notoriously dull.

No fixed blades? CRKT CEO is a perfect letter opener..... I prefer my Kershaw Eros, narrower blade profile and no speed safe. Benchmade, nice, but no clip is a deal breaker. I love Boker, I love my Ti handle Urban Trapper. Maximum blade for size. Spyderco Dragonfly is a classic blade design, double jimping/ choir allows for finesse in use. Mine is Yellow in H1 for Kayak use, but I love that wooden look. Chris Reeve.......want....want......want......one I don’t have! Got a Case too, but the Case Doctors knife with spatula I also have a Cold Steel Lucky One. So light, such a great blade. Not so lucky for me as after reprofiling and sharpening the blade, the tip cut my hand open, needing stitches...diy job Oh dear, I have a knife habit.

To be honest, I wouldn't go with any of these, because they feel a little too modern knifey or brutish. As a cheap but well made, non threatening knife, always without a thought: Opinel with a walnut or one of those special handles. You can get those kind of small and incredibly light. I always have mine razor sharp with me. Always does the job and no one is giving me a strange look when I get it out. I think that is also partly because I can't snap it open and it seems a little more like a knife your grandpa might produce to cut an apple. Also it is so cheap that I don't think twice to take it anywhere. If you want to go for really classy and non threatening: Perceval L08. It is a little more on the bigger side for me, so it won't replace the Opinel. But that blade shape is just so classy and even though it isn't a very small knife, nobody would think twice if you got it out in public to cut off a lose thread from your wife's top or something. But of course that is just my taste and I have to admit it makes knife shopping rather hard.

Knife Center The problem with using or carrying a really well made custom knife with an intimidating looking blade is they look scary. They may be beautifully made with quality materials and look elegant to you and me but, pretty much that is the only ones. If you carry a small Swiss Army knife; it might be better for some situations; but then you present yourself as being Mr. Gadget. I carry a little Rambler and it always perks people’s interest. They look at it and laugh at its small size. I believe the best choice is a small traditional folder with mirror finished blades that has one or two blades. It is classy and few people are going to think about calling 911. You just can’t beat a shiny little knife with exotic black Buffalo horn or some other cool handle material. German silver bolsters never go out of style. If you need to use it and others see it; more times than not someone wants to look at it and asks where you go it. You will be pleasantly surprise how many pretty girls like little pocket knives. They like them just like they like fine jewelry because that is what they are. The secret is; I carry all three, I just use the proper one for the proper task.

Some good knives here, but I would argue that any Gentlemen's knife needs the additional discretion of a deep carry clip, and any clip knife must be light enough (2.5 oz or less) to be worn in in suit slacks or dress shirt pockets. The design needs to be sleek and elegant - not necessarily ergonomic and cutting edge like the ZT. This category should be filled with ultralight pen knives rather than 4 oz utility knives.
