Great answer on the self defense question. I carry that very light. I keep it in my left hand in case I have to grab my CCW or knife with my right. I will also use the light to alert fast moving cars of my presence as they approach my location. I shine it on the ground in front of me. With the substantial feel of the light and the features it provides, I feel that this is the best first tool I would need on a night walk.

Damasteel is RWL-34 when used for blades mostly. The company also makes a different type of Damasteel meant for jewelry so it can be confusing. On top of that the company makes Damacore, which contains three different alloys (N11X, RWL-34, and PMC27).

I wanted to throw my two cents in on some of these questions! For gent’s knives that can see harder use, there’s also: MKM Terzuola Clap, Fallkniven GP Gentleman’s Pocket Knife, Kansept Knives Lunquist Reverie, Benchmade North Fork. For an easy-to-operate self defense, totally agreeing with DCA here 1,000,000,000%. Without training, you’ll probably find yourself dropping your knife or getting disarmed and having it used against you instead. But, the Ka-Bar TDI Investigator Law Enforcement Fixed Blade Knife is designed for use in very tight fighting situations, and is designed to be as intuitive in use as possible.

LionSteel is a really impressive company, they have repeatedly won Knife of the Year with their nifty ideas... They have integral handled G10, carbon fiber, titanium, and aluminum knives, removable flipper tabs for making an "illegal" knife legal in another country, and that trick disappearing clip on some bigger knives as well. They are the OEM for many other brands, too - some DPX folders as well as the Spyderco SpyOpera as examples...

Hi David (& Seth), My first question was answered brilliantly, so here I go again! Hope you can help me out with another one similar to my 1st question: I'm looking for a folding knife, with the following features: 1) Flipper (that becomes a "guard") 2) Axis or Similar Cross-Bar Lock (**MUST** be bank-vault, bomb-proof strong) 3) Thumb Hole, either oval or round, doesn't matter, but **MUST** have it... 4) About 3" or more Blade Length 5) Pointy, not Wharncliffe, but needs some belly. 6) Optional, but would be game-winning: Full Flat Grind, finger choil, assist or bearings in the pivot and Deep Carry Pocket Clip 7) See if you can recommend me a budget and a premium version each. Thanks so much!

For novice self defenders, I agree with DCA a flashlight preferably with a strobe function will work, but I would pair it with an OC spray. For most dog walkers the threat come from 4 legged animals. You can blind it with the light and incapacitate it with the spray, but if comes at you anyway you can crack it in the face with crenellated head of the light. Works well for 2 legged animals too.

I’ll finish this answer! As a certain KZbinr says, the best weapon for self defence is a good pair of running shoes. But if you’re going to carry a self defence knife, for me the best is the Cold Steel Black Talon II fully serrated. Three reasons; 1) It looks big and scary, just wave it at an assailant and they may think twice about victimising you. 2) The thumb plate acts as a wave deployer and it catches the pocket easily, easy to draw from your pocket completely deployed. 3) If you have to use it, the blade shape makes it something very easy to use. Just swing it, you’ll catch something and it’ll do damage. The serrations will cut through denim or leather, no problem. Look up Lynn Thompson’s videos on it and he explains well why this shape is the best for self defence. I’m also not a lawyer, or trained in self defence.
@andrewtomlin80573 жыл бұрын
I agree. Pulling a knife for self defense is a mistake. If your attacker has a knife you run, a knife fight often ends with two dead bodies. If he has no knife and you pull one now you have to use it which isn’t fun, and if you don’t use it they may use it against you, very bad situation run unless you have no other choice, if you have to use it you have to use it well, meaning you have to end a life, this is the truth of what a knife fight is. Your a wise man
@davidgarrett56713 жыл бұрын
Looking for a knife that will "scare" the criminals may be a fun exercise but in real life there isn't any that will frighten away a hardened criminal. They have much more experience with violence.
@Mo.89.3 жыл бұрын
Sure. If someone is determined to attack you then nothing may stop them. But if some punks are looking for an easy mark and he draws a Black Talon II, they may decide it’s not worth it. And if you encounter one of those people determined to harm you no matter what, it’s the knife I’d want to be swinging for my life with above any other.
@davidgarrett56713 жыл бұрын
@@Mo.89. If you happen to get some young people who it is there first time trying to attack or rob someone there is a very slim chance they will be afraid of your knife. And if you have had no trying and you are just wildly swinging you would be better off with your fists. The Black Talon II combined with training will work. Actually any good knife with some training will work. But the Crocodile Dundee scene is fake for the movies.
@Mo.89.3 жыл бұрын
Either you live in a very, very bad neighbourhood, or fantasy land. Like I said, I’m sure there are some assailants who would attack no matter what. But to suggest nobody would see a target armed with an intimidating weapon and think it may not be worth it is so ridiculous. Sure, this isn’t Crocodile Dundee, but nobody said “just have a bigger knife than the other guy”. And again, I’m sorry for whatever unfortunate area you live in where gangs of bold youths run around attacking strangers without fear. The self defence tool I’d suggest for you is moving to a better area.

Question: what are your best examples of “small knives that have the utility of bigger knives” and “bigger knives that carry like smaller knives?” E.g. 3.25” or less knives with ergonomic grips and long cutting edges, as well as 3.5” or greater knives with slimmer, lighter carry profiles?

Always enjoy your channel. A comment on the Lionsteel Thrill. I've had the same one twice, really attracted by how well it fit the "gentleman's harder use" category -- but at least in my case, the detent, well, didn't. I contacted Lionsteel who readily replaced my first one...but after a few months of occasional "fidget" carry, the detent went on my second one, too and I've yet to hear back from Lionsteel. I have other knives of theirs so very much like the brand but in my book the "Thrill" is gone.

Harpoon, Bowie, Dagger, and Drop Point models are all accounted for, but it appears they're still only selling the Hawkbill variant in AUS-8 steel. Is anyone aware of why this is, or if some site has that model as an exclusive? A D2 Hawkbill auto under 3.5 inches is just the perfect work knife for me, tired of stropping my AUS-8 one so much.

I have a question, why do knife makers all use the same steel on every knife? For example, every budget knife or at least 90 percent were in D2, every slightly more premium knife is in S35VN, and all 250-400 dollar knife is in M390. There must be some reason these 3 steels are on 90 percent of all non Benchmade/Spyderco knives while none use steel like Cru-wear, K390 or Maxamet.

Even if you're not making knives but you still want to learn about the process of knife making, he's one of the best. I also recommend Mr. Mike Stewart of Bark River Knives. He's been in the knife game almost 40 year I believe. He was either owner or part owner of blackjack knives back in the day and he spent some time with marbles until they moved manufacturing overseas then he started Bark River and that man is a library of knife and steel knowledge. I belong to the official BR group on FB and him and his family are admins and they talk to customers in the comments of the group and get and give feedback. Spyderco Resilience Lightweight in S35VN - bright blue handles, so it's easy to find if you drop it in the dirt or mulch, steel liners to make it burly, nice long full OR partially serrated blade (4.2"!), easy open Spydie hole, S35VN for great edge retention... If the blade is too long for your desires, try the Tenacious 3.39 part-serrated with all the same features mentioned for about $10 less. Personally I'd think the longer blade of the Resilience would be handy because you could cut and keep the pivot and locking mechanism away from what's inside the bags as it might require more frequent cleaning otherwise.

Many thanks for all the videos & info

Dear DCA, What makes a knife have excellent action, and are there any knives you would recommend for their action alone?

Whenever they come back in stock, the Demko AD20.5 has the most incredibly fidget-friendly yet STRONG locking mechanism yet! Coming a close second would be a Hogue Deka (or any Hogue with the ABLE lock - their version of the AXIS lock - theirs just happens to be smoother). Totally my humble opinion as I have both, but DCA has mentioned the Deka favorably many times, and in the KnifeCenter FAQ #39: Best of BLADE Show video he definitely makes some positive noises about the Demko - he mentions that it should probably be best production folder in the show!

Hey DCA, I've been to add another knife to my very small collection, as of the moment I have been looking at the L.T. Wright GNS Scandi or the Casstrom Sweden No. 10 fixed blade, are there any other knives with similar styles you could recommend that share the same features? Thanks.

Great episode as always! I learn something new everytime I watch, definitely one of the most entertaining and educational series I watch on KZbin. Question for consideration, I'm going through a serious brass obsession right now. What are some of your favorite knives that incorporate brass scales or other brass elements in their design and construction? Many thanks!

Ok, ok, I get it. You REALLY REALLY like the Viper Turn, doncha? It has been in four videos so far and going strong. (Disclaimer: I love the Turn and the one with red lava carbon fiber is my most recent EDC) Keep up the Maniago love!

I edc a Becker bk11 with after market micarta handles, under 100 for both and I’ve been happy with it for a decade. DCA has a video dedicated to pocket fixed blades.

Looking for a small edc with serrated blade to use fishing to cut bait. Must be corrosion resistant. Any recommendations that are in stock.

I have a ton of respect for Ethan Becker and his designs. I carried a bk2 while working at a mill and one day my friend got his ring caught in a chain that carried him to a stacker machine that would have destroyed him. I cut two of his fingers off with one chop before he was pulled in and gifted him the knife upon his return. That knife saved his life and my mental health almost certainly. For those wondering I would not have been able to turn off machine before he was sucked in it was best option. I would trust a Becker with my life any day.

Hi DCA, in this video there is mention of a used knife market. I have a few knives I would like to sell/trade, how does one get in touch with honest traders? Thanks for everything you all do!

new into knives but accumulating pretty fast. im looking for a spring assisted 3-4 inches around $100-200. open to auto but i think i like the idea of assisted more. i've been looking at some zero tolerance but that seems to be all im seeing in that range. suggest some more options please
@stratobungle3 жыл бұрын
I'd say that the industry is mostly moving away from spring-assisted folders, as todays flippers and thumbstud-opening folders using bearings are just so incredibly smooth and fast. That said, Kershaw, SOG, and Benchmade still have a good selection of spring-assist folders in that price range.
