@@johnc4774 I don't agree with Mr loveless myself either. But....from a practical point of view pearl and bone unless resin stabilized has a tendency to crack @ the pin rivets over time. But be aware that their natural beauty comes at a high price regarding long term durability.

A gentleman's knife, to me, should be one that if you had to use in a social setting will not cause alarm to those around you. Tacticool of any kind are not gentlemen knives. Sleek, small, smooth and polished, wood or other classic scales are an easy pick. Modern/cool stuff might work but probably not with the wrong execution. The clip if it has one needs to be simple or smooth looking, attractive but not distracting. When in doubt, look at pens for reference or even match.

About a year ago I had to decide on a knife to wear with a suit and slacks. I decided on the Gerber 39 series. I needed something without a pocket clip, because no matter how suave it looks, the pocket clip detracts from the professional appearance. The same with something that is 2 hand opening, so I don't attract unneeded attention while deploying the blade. And finally, the lock-back design is a timeless classic, exactly what a gentleman should have.

I've carried the Boker Urban Trapper for years now - I wear everything from tactical pants, jeans to suits, etc. The low profile clip makes it perfect for low concealment, not wearing out my pockets and great for getting to when needed. The price has come now over the years, but its still somewhat pricy - still I've purchased and tried out lesser priced, but similar styled knives - only to find out that they are not low profile, but are really thick handled, bulky and heavy. The Boker comes with a tool to tighten the handles or change them out if you want to change handles. The blade holds its edge really really well. Overall I have to give it a solid A-. I'm currently looking at the knives by deejo.com - around the same price, but with a lot more customization. Of course, back in my airborne days I carried a variety of different work blades, but you carry what the environment you are in demands.

'Gentlemen's Knives' ? Sorry I don't think you brought the right knives for this discussion. The classic image of a gentleman is someone who doesn't do manual work so why would he carry a tool. (This is the reason why top quality dress shirts do not have pockets, if you have a breast pocket in your shirt to carry a pen it denotes that you are a worker who takes instructions, the director wears a shirt without pockets as his only duty is to give instructions) So a gentleman's knife would be extremely light duty, small, thin, and discrete. (Fit for opening a letter and that's about it) It is an accessory, an ornament, a statement as to ones class and station. In other words .... jewellery. If you are someone who wears a robust chunky watch with a suit instead of a light duty dress watch then you might not relate to what the image of gentleman actually is. Interesting the same principle applies to walking sticks, a poor mans walking stick was designed to be functional to suit his profession. A gentleman's walking stick was ornamental and designed to signify his station in society. 🙂👨🏼⚖️

Rob G I agree. Almost all of the knifes here have pocket clips too. If you have worn suit of great quality you wouldn’t want to rip up the fabric with a knife clip

You make great points. Scales would be mother of pearl or white bone for day. Ebony for evening events.

Benchmade 480 Shoki Nakamura Gentelmen's Folder. Bought in Alaska at the Army/Navy store in Anchorage in 2010. Still love this knife.

The SOG Twitch II with wood scales is the perfect gentleman's knife. Classy and small enough not seem aggressive, but very nice with the spring assisted flicker.

A great choice is also a victorinox alox series knife. They are great cause their slim enough, and look great in the silver finish.

I think a gentleman’s knife must have 2 blades, be small enough to be carried in a shirt pocket and have a place to engrave your initials. Fail on this one guys. A gentleman’s knife is basically a functional piece of jewelry. It is used to open a letter, cut twine for packaging. It should under no circumstances be capable of “real work” as a gentleman would have a separate and appropriate knife for other tasks. Say a hunting knife, a picnic knife for food prep or a gardening knife to tend to his roses. Don’t you know nothing 😂😂😂😂

I think a great budget option for a gentleman’s knife would be the Kershaw Atmos. It’s classy looking and quite slim and light.

Benchmade 940 should be on the list. It was made to be a work knife but also able to be dressed up and taken to square dances.

When wearing a suit, I go for the douk douk : a french knife, extermely slim, elegant, very simple but robust fabrication (We are talking about just 6 parts of metal put together). It have a pretty beautiful design, with arabesques on the blade, and a melanesian spirit on the handle, which gives a little "repented adventurer" style, and, most importantly for a gentleman knife : a story to tell behind it. You can get it out, unfold it, and, depending who you have in front of you, start speaking of either the melanesian spirit which gave his name to it, or the algerian war, when it became famous, or just about the knife conception.

I like when you all were talking about your slip joint scars. Definitely have one from when I was a kid on my finger

I think either the Protech Runt or Sprint with exotic wood scales are the perfect blade size for a "Gentleman's knife". They are both beautifully designed and technically interesting, and the blade size won't scare the crap out of anyone.
