Stephanie Nadolny is superior because she seemed to truly empathize with Gohan's internal struggle & pain. Even the scream when breaking the barrier to SS2 is a struggle and you can hear her act it out brilliantly. Both Actors are extremely talented, but Stephanie simultaneously immersed you into Gohan's internal & external conflict in a way that induced nostalgia.

The thing with Colleen is that when she voices Gohan you're hyper aware its a female voicing him. Stephanie as Gohan actually sounded like a little boy. She was also more versatile voicing gohan from 4 years old and subtlely adjusting her voice as Gohan ages. Even more so when she voices Goku. At first glance you think they sound the same, but her voice as kid Goku has a very carefree tone with significantly less rasp. Stephanie captured the characters in a way similar to Masako Nozawa. I love Colleen, but you can't tell me her voice for Erza, Luffy, and DBZKai's Gohan don't sound EXACTLY the same.

Stephanie Nadolny gives me straight up goosebumps whenever I hear her, her voice is so iconic and ingrained into my head whenever I think of Kid Goku or Teen Gohan from growing up with this show, so much that hearing a different voice actor for the same character is just an instant wtf. It's like if they suddenly decided to change Goku's voice and use someone else other than Sean Schemmel, it honestly just would not be the same. Thats not to say Colleen is bad or anything, she's a good voice actor, I just don't like it. I prefer Stephanie's more rough voice. I do love the new voice actor for Frieza though, he really grew on me. Seems its either a hit or miss whenever they recast voices for such beloved and nostalgic characters.

Steph's acting delved deeper into Gohan's character. Colleen managed to show the anger but Gohan's emotions are alot more complex than the other characters, Steph's acting still depicted the conflict and struggle in Gohan's mind to restrain himself or release his power, it's almost like you can hear the moment his mind snaps during the SSJ2 transformation. I would imagine Colleen would probably be suited to kid Trunks, but Steph's multi faceted and stepped approach is perfect for Gohan.

Ironically, something about Colleen's control kinda makes the emotion ring hollow to me. I think she's a fantastic VA, but that's actually sort of the issue. She's got so much control, such good technique, it strips away the visceral intensity. On the other hand, Stephanie obviously has good technique as well(she wouldn't have been able to do this for so long if she didn't), but she doesn't seem to have the same breath control/support that Colleen has. And because she can't hold out the screams for as long and as evenly, it lends itself to the performance.

Stephanie dips too far into her lower register and coerces the intended effect. The result is that you literally hear her spine in her acting, so it's painfully obvious that her sound is female She's trying to be _like_ a boy, which confuses the role. Gohan is a child, and not just any child, the child of a rough and tumble Saiyan warrior. Even Trunks as an adult represents this internal struggle through his acting. His character arc goes from wanting to put his Saiyan nature to good use, to being completely green about what it means to live among Saiyans (specifically Vegeta), then dealing with the imposter syndrome of his father's legacy Gohan just did all that on the ground floor where he starts off a child, then makes his stand against his mother's wishes, to finally feeling like he can make a difference within the fight of his Saiyan heritage He bites off more than he can chew, but because he has an instinct for doing the right thing, his combat prowess takes over and he forgets that he is supposed to be mild mannered I say all this because of all the back and forth within his conscience where he's not exactly certain how he should be conducting himself. So like when he has a head slap moment during Yamacha's Saibamen fight where Piccolo has to tell him to use his senses to read movements Fast forward to him watching Goku square up with Perfect Cell and his take on their battle was that the two of them were just playing. So we have this character whose mind is on the scene, but his heart doesn't exactly know where he stands. This is the behavior of a boy A better example of this can be found in Gurren Lagann when Kamina takes his first steps outside. "There's nothing here" so his father breaks down the premise of a man's soul and being completely free. When confronted with the gravitas of this reality, he looks down at his feet. Being uncertain. The rest of his life is spent putting the pedal to the mettle and confronting every aspect of his heart that bore doubt. He became the perfect mentor and archetype for Simon who literally couldn't see the hand in front of his face When you go into a role, there has to be evidence that you understand a character's motivations. And that goes into your acting. You can do a line read and everyone goes out for drinks after a day in the studio, but without a sort of connection with the character, it's a jobber's task at best

The fact that you like the whiny, scared, girly Gohan better is stupid when he grew out of that by the end of the Saiyan saga and became a badass in the Namek saga who stood up for his friends even if it meant he would get destroyed. Coleen makes Gohan seem like a crybaby. Stephanie shows how much heart Gohan has for struggle.

I think the reason Stephanie Nadoly works so well ( other than actually sounding like a young boy). Is the fact she just doesn't have many roles. She's pretty much know for Gohan and Kid Goku and hasn't done much since. Colleen on the other hand, has had a huge career of up to 300 different series, as well as playing Luffy. There's really nowhere she can go in terms of voices.

Stephanie all the way. Ill never forget watching that ssj2 transformation live with the ost and recording it on my vhs.. I probably re-watched that scene so many times. And on vhs, it wasn't nearly as easy as today. 😅 Still gives me chills. Ssj2 transformation in bojack was badass as well.

Colleen Clinkenbeard is in my top 5 favorite VA's of all time. She sounds great as Gohan. And for some reason, as Gohan she sounds like Laura Stahl. Like A LOT like Laura Stahl. It can go either between Colleen and Stephanie but if I were to give the edge to one or the other, it goes to Stephanie. Clinkenbeard is more of a Erza person to me, because as Erza she truly shines. She's like Bryce Papenbrook with Eren, or Laura Stahl with Aiger, and even Johnny Yong Bosch with Ichigo. But Stephanie essentially made my childhood with DBZ. Nonetheless, both VA's are straight🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥

For me its Nadolny as kid Goku and Clinkenbeard for kid Gohan. Nadolny fits Goku's rowdiness and more relaxed attitude whereas Clinkenbeard sounds more sensitive and anxious like kid Gohan.

Exactly my thoughts. I'm watching through Dragon Ball all the way through for the first time right now and I'm loving Stephanie as Goku, but after watching Kai and hearing Colleen as Gohan, as much as I want to revisit the original Z, it's going to be weird hearing Stephanie as Gohan. I grew up on Z, so Stephanie's voice is certainly nostalgic for me, but I think you're right, that Colleen's voice just more accurately captures Gohan's more sensitive nature.

Liked Colleen for the very young Gohan, but I like Stephanie for a slightly older Gohan, like from Android Saga after training for 19 and 20 with Goku or Piccolo on. Kinda like his voice is just starting to change, developing nicely into Hebert Gohan after the timeskip. Stephanie is always kid Goku though, she’s beyond perfect for his character.
