Your absolutely right. Drummonds voice fits perfectly for saiyan Saga but after that Sabats voice is much better suited for the scenes they gave us. I. E His speeches and transformations. The dub and ost that it gave in funi was the best. Ocean was a good start. That's how they aired it on CN.

I mean, the reading of that scene with either voice - Sabat feels like a narrator and someone who is kind of bothered by what's happening, maybe making empty threats...but Drummond starts off sassy, deluded, grandiose, almost bi-polar, and then snaps into an all out loss of control. If I heard someone telling me they were going to kill me like Sabat, I'd be confused, but if I heard Drummond running after me saying "you wont escape my wrath" I might actually sht myself.

I completely agree. It's the only reason I keep my sanity when watching the Android saga, that he's young so he sounds higher I guess. I don't mind Drummond or even early Sabat for the Saiyan saga and Namek sagas, but it makes less sense as time goes on and he grows to make him sound like a snake or something. So for that modern Sabat is perfect for that especially considering how his voice naturally evolves into the one we hear today.

The way I see it, Drummonds normal voice is ok, but Sabat’s screams are better later on. For example, “does a machine like yourself ever experience fear” Drummond line is much better than Sabat’s. However, Screams like the Final Flash, That’s my Bulma, and going blue for the first time really show that Sabat’s works perfectly for the role. I just think Drummonds voice is too high for someone like Vegeta. Just my opinion

Drummond isn't better than Sabat. Sabat isn't better than Drummond, Drummond is the ONLY one who can do Vegeta as a villain. Sabat is the ONLY ones who can do Vegeta as an anti-hero (and eventually a "real" hero...i guess) (Lanipator is great for both, but that's actually re-written so well that the whole idea of villain/hero changes completely)

I like Brian Drummond up to the end of the Frieza Saga. However, once the Android Saga starts, Vegeta's character begins to slowly change. He begins to calm down, and become less of the sadistic tyrant he once was. However, Drummond doesn't change his performance, keeping the intensity all the way up at 11, and eventually his performance doesn't fit with the character anymore. Sabat does a better job of showing the growth of the character, even if he struggles with the character in the early parts of the series.

Drummond has the scream hands down, no contest. I do like Sabats normal voice much better though, sounds wholesome and cool, and his intense voice sounds like corey taylor in the second clip, aka... really badass. I think Sabat wins out in his normal and shouting voice, just not screaming. What is also worth mentioning, Drummond definitely has that sinister vibe going for him unlike Sabat. It's obviously arguable who is best, but Sabat is still more nostalgic for me.

The screaming was about the only part I'd say he has over Sabat, but nonetheless, his voice was just..well too high imo. I could see it for a younger Vegeta. Sabat's interpretation made him seem more of an older, kind of well put together tone. To say Drummond is the best the whole way through is pushing it, same goes for Sabat. They both play out well, but personally, I'd much rather watch an episode of DBZ if Sabat is in it. Personal preference I guess.

I hear Drummond's voice and personally I just don't think of who Vegeta is. I get his personality, what he strives for, but I would much rather it be more of a voice progression. I see Saiyan Saga, maybe a little in the beginning of Namek for Drummond. Anything else just feels like its way too raspy, somewhat of a higher tone. Again just my own opinion and preference.

As a Dragon Ball fan for more then 20 years I have watched it since I was little and I grew up with Drummond as Vegeta and I loved that evil, psychotic side to him and that voice what is said is the reason. However when the voice changed on us all and everyone character had different voices we started to like Sabat too. Generally not at first but you loved the show so much you adapted to it. I really enjoy both characters but thinking about my childhood I would choose drummond for the saiyan and namek saga. After freeza it just seems weird to hear drummonds voice again. However both Drummond and Sabat did an awesome job portraying the saiyan prince Vegeta and to hate on either one is just ignorant. You can have a favorite but don't discredit the other who did such a good job too.

If you were born early enough in the nineties or in the eighties you would have actually experienced both of these voice actors if you lived in America. When DBZ first aired in america and it was going through the story it was all Brian Drummond up to about half way through the Frieza Saga. A dispute over rights related to the show forced Drummond to leave and finish with a different company (Ocean). The DBZ that aired in America from that point on was Funimation's Sabat and it wasn't until much later that they went back and redid the Raditz, Napa, and early Frieza saga to establish Sabat as the sole voice for Funimation's Vegeta. So, for some of us we have a legitimate childhood awe to both of these voice actors. For me the way I look at it is that Drummond is the best choice for Vegeta when he is still fully evil. But, right as Vegeta starts to change and become a point of view hero is right about the same time that the voice changed to Sabat. I like Sabat as Vegeta's voice when he is a hero because Sabat has a more heroic quality, wheras Drummond is sinister.

In my head i always imagine brian drummond's voice with the saiyan armor vegeta who clearly looks shorter, younger and less muscular. Like an angry teenager. Christopher Sabat's voice looks good on vegeta after he loses his original armor in namek during ginyu saga when magically he gains a few inches and has a bigger body. Coz clearly Sabat sounds more manly whereas drummond sounds younger and more intense. Anyway love them both.

FUNi dropped Ocean and went in house midway through the Ginyu episodes. 90's kids first heard Sabat's Vegeta a few days after the Dreamcast came out (9/9/99) in [Dub] Episode 54, "Ginyu Assault" on 9/13/99.

If anything, the person who really should decide who they like best is the viewer. From my stand point, I do like how Drummond puts more emphasis into his acting. Sabat isn’t a bad voice actor. He’s actually one of my favorites because of other characters he’s voiced. However, Drummond’s Vegeta was so good, so terrifying even despite the dubbing censorship, that I basically fell in love with anime from then on. His Vegeta’s nuance in rage and hubris is as iconic to me as Hamill’s Joker when he does those different laughs to emote. Drummond’s performance may not have a calm switch, but nobody can tell me Final Flash against perfect Cell wouldn’t have been better suited to an unhinged rant. Vegeta’s DBZ character arc has only two moments when Drummond falls short tonally because the character lacks spite and hubris: when Vegeta explodes to beat Majin Buu and when he admits Goku is the best at the very end of the series.

Sabot did a decent job for the early Funi dub. Back when he was evolving Vegeta’s voice to reflect the passage of time. But Drummond was on a whole other level. He could make Vegeta sound like a brat, a friend, and a raging psychopath in one take. I could believe that this vegeta was an emotionally unstable and vicious man who lived a life of violence. When he powered up, it was terrifying and you knew he was going to rip a man to pieces like a Wolverine. (Which by the way would’ve been a good role for Drummond to play because he can do rage very well). Nothing against sabot. He seems like a decent guy, and he’s a shit ton cooler towards his fellow actors than that shithead Schemmel who constantly goes after anyone else that voices Goku, (even random dudes on KZbin). Sabot even cameos in DBZ Abridged because he was a fan of their work. So believe me I don’t say this out of malice or wish to demean the guy. But Drummond runs circles around him in acting.

Lets put this all to rest ladies and gentlemen. How about the way it originated on Toonami- The way we all grew to love DBZ when we were younger. Drummond: Beginning- ~Frieza saga, Sabat: End of Frieza saga- Last episode. We all have our recollections as to whom is the true prince Vegeta, but I like how much things change at those points in the time in the show to reflect how different everyone has become. Vegeta goes from youthful, angry/angst filled semi-anti-hero with a selfish personal agenda, to full fledged, mature Z-Warrior in the Android saga proceeding the Frieza saga. And it's like this for all the characters, with their voice actors reflecting this. Every character from Bulma to Vegeta undergoes this change in a seemingly natural manner. It's the only time in the history of my anime experience that I have truly loved and appreciated a change of cast midway through a series. And if anyone has any info as to how I can find dvd's/videos of this airing, I would owe you a lifetime supply of your favorite cookies.

Totally agree! Some of the Funimation actors have deeper voices and when they took over from Ocean, it did feel as if the characters had aged. Especially Goku and Vegeta. You could always buy the "Rock the Dragon" box set which Funimation released. It contains all the Ocean Dub episodes up until Funimation took over. Then you could watch the rest of the series on the orange brick box sets or the new Blu Ray box sets.

This box set contains the first 53 episodes and they are 100% the 'exact' episodes you would have watched in the 90's on Toonami and as far as I'm aware, they were all edited! I'm not sure but I think the first time DBZ was truly unedited for western audiences was when Funimation released the orange brick set. Unlike America, where Ocean only dubbed the first 53 episodes, In the U.K. where I grew up Ocean dubbed episodes 1-53 and 108-219. The sad thing for me is that as amazing as the "Rock the Dragon" box set is, Funimation will probably never release a box set that contains the entire Ocean dubbed Series!

I totally agree. Both voice actors are very talented, and on Toonami, the voice changes depicted character progression as if he had aged. Drummond seems like a younger Vegeta, with Sabat's Vegeta voice seems like an older version, slightly more regal in tone, and with that princely arrogance with all love in full tilt.

Drummond was definitely the superior Evil Vegeta but to me the voice change was perfect for the character change. Even Sabat tried to sound like Drummond in the Namek saga but developed a voice of his own as Vegeta's character developed. As much as I love Sabat as hearing Vegeta, hearing him in the Saiyan or early Namek sagas does not sound right at all. Likewise, hearing Drummond's Vegeta later on is just as bizarre.

okay, first of all, when you want to prove something to anyone NEVER get emotional about it. basically what you did is putting one on a podest while putting the other one down, which is a way to make people agree with you, but not to prove anything. and what you call a 60 year old man's voice is what i call manly as hell. he got that bass in his tone which makes sabat sound like being a testosterone filled, rage induced savage- which is what vegeta basically is supposed to represent. on the other hand, drummond has a higher pitched voice, which actually sounds like he (as vegeta) was on the verge of insanity. now to your examples: the first did not impress me at all. for me it sounded like they read the line the exact same way as the other, which made me question your credibility when the line "reading the lines out loud vs putting emotion behind them" appeared. in the next example you showed how sabat "grunted" and drummond actually screamed. while sabat started from a rather silent grunt, he actually built up to a powerful scream. drummond went more out from the begining. i could go into further detail about all examples, but this comment is already long enough. and i have one more request. could you please not mention the music that plays in the background? it has nothing to do with the voice actors and takes alot of your credility away, since you furthermore dig yourself a hole of fanboy-ism. so for me, they both are great in what they do and it is more of a preference than anything else. you proved nothing at all.

I have always liked Drummond's line delivery, his screams and intonation more than Sabat's. I will agree though that once Vegeta started to control his rage later in the series Sabat seemed to fit the role better. But no matter what I grew up with Drummond being my favorite so there is my bias, both are good either way. In the end it's all subjective.

Drummond is by far the best Vegeta. Old or young. I like a lot of Sabat's work (All-Might and Piccolo for example) and I got used to his Vegeta, but I always preferred the emotion and sinister vibe Drummond brought to the role. Even older Vegeta worked really well with Drummond's voice, as the movie he appeared in showed. He's the best Vegeta and it's a shame that his time in the role got cut short. He's the only voice actor from the Ocean Dub that I couldn't fully get over the change of. The Ocean Dubs after the Freeza saga have such bad production values too, so it's not terribly fair to compare. Drummond is the only one that put his ass into those without a good production direction. I wish the Funimation team had been able to bring in Drummond as a full time, but eh. Shit happens. The Ocean dub was definitely the more energetic of the two dubs, and then the whole situation with pay happened.

2:40 When I first saw this scene as a kid (was probably about 12 at the time), Vegeta's raw fury legitimately terrified me. To the point that the next time I saw that episode, I practically wanted to cover my ears and look away from the screen during that part. I didn't, but I wanted to. And to this day, seeing that scene whenever rewatching the show (granted with Funimation, not Ocean voices) still makes me feel a little bit uncomfortable. Not because I'm still scared of it. But the memory of how it made me feel that first time always comes to mind when seeing it.
