Sadly this one was shot down over Kiev at start of war whilst patrolling with that pilot at the controls they believe he was accidentally shot down by Ukrainian air defence 🥲

Wonderful, thanks! The Flanker, in all its variants, is still my favourite aircraft after all these years. I hope one of the stills photographers got a good shot of the image at 10:26, with the diffraction colours and shadow on the nearby cloud. Amazing shot to be had there.

I don't know the general opinion. But in my opinion, pure the things I've read and saw, the Sukhoi - and MiG fighter jets are really a state of the art. The best (Russian) fighter jets ever designed and build. I sure love these planes more than looking for a x-time at the most beautiful woman in this world. Thumb up from The Netherlands. It's a nice display but the F-18C display by the Finnish Air Force was far superior and should have received the best display of the show, not this. I do love the SU-27 though, what a gorgeous aircraft.

@J L Not necessarily, later models may spec better than the Hornet, but U.S. Naval Aviation tactics are superior. Power to weight alone is an issue. These birds are sluggish as hell. Also, American missiles are better. There is no guaranteed win against the Super Hornet in any wise.

@@Repented008 F-18C power to weight ration is 1.12 with half the fuel and two aim-9s. Su-27 - 1.11, but Su carries two short, two long range missiles and has twice the range. F-18E is also 1.11 but lacks the range and payload of Su-27.

@@Grom0zeka I take your point brother, but I've two slight counters assuming your facts are straight. 1) American air refueling systems are world class so I wouldn't count range as a problem 2) With respect to payload, I think the competence of American tactics, tracking systems and missiles is thought to mitigate the payload limitation. At least, it seemed so with the F-35 payload argument. You have a point though.

Where is written it is Russian Air Force? By the way, Lt Col. Yurii Bulavka was Winner of the "Paul Bowen Trophy" for the best solo jet display and Captain Arto Ukskoski was Winner of the "Sir Douglas Bader Trophy" for best individual flying demonstration and the "As The Crow Flies Trophy" for best display as judged by the members of Friends of RIAT. These are three different prizes. ;-)

This is a Gorgeous aircraft. One day I want to see it in person. I may not get the opportunity until I travel outside the US. I remember seeing TU-154 flying into JFK Airport. I was awestruck seeing something so different and unique. Seeing a fighter like this SU-27 so large flying gracefully through the air amazes me. Question. Is this model of the SU-27 without Thrust Vectoring nozzles? I thought it did have it.

Yes. The thrust vectoring version is the Su-35 hence why we probably havent seen the Pugachevs Cobra or Kulbil. The Su-27 is still my favorite piece of engineering tho. Su-27 can still perform both maneuvers but since you lose extreme amounts of energy, most pilots dont risk it during low speeds and on low altitudes. The thrust vectoring makes it a lot easier.

Über die Su -27 Flanker habe ich schon soviel geschrieben dass kaum noch was weiteres schreiben kann. Aber noch etwas interessantes 1997 Sah ich zum ersten mal das Display der Russian Knights ebenfalls auf Su-27 Flanker bei der Airpower Airshow in Zeltweg, und auch schon mal im Ungarischen Kecskemet und die setzten während ihrer Vorführung auch Flares ein. Aber in Fairford hat sie dieses Jahr auch wieder eine interessante Vorführung geboten, Denn umsonst hat sie keinen Preis gewonnen.

I noticed on the air intakes their are little slats flapping, any ideas?

They stabilize air pressure in the intake. I believe are spring loaded doors that open if needed during hard maneuvering to keeps those air thirsty engines happy. With out they would” suffocate” during heavy maneuvering. www.arcforums.com/forums/air/index.php?/topic/199152-su-27-intakes/ in this forum there are some decent pictures of the intake.

If you never flied a plane like that you can't image how many G's the pilot is facing. Something like take him avway from the seat with a spoon. And ears with a constant warning drill for stall and proximity warning… Russian alway preferred manooavrability than fastness. Su 27 is their "state of art"...

Is that a limitation of the airframe or of the pilots? I never see them go really fast through the turns... Could it be the pilots refusing to subject themselves to 9g? Looks pretty, but at the same time, disappointing. Very, very slow. Even the roll rate. Is there a video anywhere really showing what Flankers and Fulcrums are capable of? Or is this it?

There is no need to do a 9G turn in an airshow in most of these jets. You on the ground, can't see the difference between a 5G and 9G turn in 99% of these maneuvers. It doesn't make sense to stress the airframe just to perform an airshow does it?

The planes are very old, at the end of their lifetime and will soon go to museums. This is why they have to be flown slowly, Ukraine has only a total of 100 planes left. They will be replaced with old F16 and maybe F15.
