I'm an IBEW electrician and I work in industrial, commercial and residential settings. I absolutely cannot imagine doing my job without these pliers. They're my absolute favorite pliers and I have turned a few coworkers onto them and they feel the absolute same way. Give them a shot! They'll ream conduit, act a needle nose, cut up to number 1 AWG, cut MC like butter and strip number 12 and 14 AWG in the strippers, or strip just about any size wire in the cable cutter if you're careful.

I have been using these pliers on the job for nearly 2 years now, the insulated model with the spring - and i wouldn't want to miss them anymore. It's probably the one tool i keep in my pocket the most after a knife and a small screwdriver. Locking and unlocking the spring mechanism to cut cables becomes second nature after a while. Stripping cable insulation of course works much better on round cables common in Germany. I didn't even regard these pliers as expensive, in Germany all models are between 35 and 40 EUR (45-50USD), about the same price as standalone Knipex cable shears.

I love Knipex pliers and seriously considered these but in the end decided on the Klein(J206-8C)all-purpose spring loaded(you can opt for crimpers instead of spring) because they seemed to have focused on the specific features used most by electricians (stripping, cutting, looping, etc). The tip of the Klein's are cross-hatched and grab wire impressively well for twisting, looping, pulling, etc

Very good tool - solid crimping (for everyday use i have front loading crimpers 97 53 08, so sometimes when I'm connecting two wires i need side crimping), very solid cutting edge. I used them to cut about 20 pieces of 0,8mm feeler gauges - I did that without a hustle with a very clean cut and I ended up with some dulled cutting edge which lead to pliers jamming when being closed so I just used sharpening stone on flat cutting surface and after 3 minutes they work like new.

As a rv builder, the 1392200 has become one of my favourite tools for electrical installations. And it has replaced some other pliers, which makes my tool bag lighter.

I'm an electrician and I wouldn't want to be without these. I don't use the crimpers, I wish they had a #10 instead of the #14. I use them to rough in conduit, all the way through to finish. I love the cable shear on them. Nobody I work with use any Knipex as they are all klein fan boys. However they are impressed when I can cut all the way through all the wires on the end of a fish tape in one swipe. If I lost them, I would go out and get a new pair that same day.

I think that one tool for each task is fare better then one tool for it all, what if that tool gets broken?! About fanboy's I do not understand them, Knipex do make fine tools but not them all and that's the same for all brands. Bye what is best not what has the right name, i.e. for what I do, most Fluke meters would be unusable including the 87 V.

I would like to know whether the KNIPEX StriX is worth it’s value or would it be better to go for the cable shears and wire stripper as separate tools? Is the cutter on the StriX the same as the cutter on the cable shears?

Very detailed informative review as always. I'm an electrician, got this tool recently, and use it daily. Quite costly, quite high quality. Wish they had #10 stripper instead of crimper, and serrated tips rather than smooth. The lopper style cutter is where this tool really shines! And I agree the handles should be built bigger. I may make a video on them myself ;) you and sparky channel set the bar high lol

I have these and I agree with your assessment 100%. I feel the smaller handle does fit the pliers but as a way to limit how large of wire one would attempt to cut the wire...this sadly negatively effects the crimper. They should have moved the crimper between the handles like Klein does to give better leverage. These are some of the best finished pliers Knipex sells. The only ones comparable are the box joint pliers/cutters that are for electronics but $50-$70 a piece.

These combo pliers are best suited for commercial MC cable installation. I reach for them sometimes when doing other tasks as they are quite handy. Only my Knipex Cobra pliers get more use. I use a dedicated ferrule crimppers not these. Great review as usual. Highly recommend this model for commercial / residential electricians

Jon Johnson 100% dude. Out of all the multi function pliers, this one has the nicest lopper for mc/bx/ac90. Wide enough Jaws was a 'must have' in choosing for me. No #10 still sucks in commercial though.

Good video, thank you! The installation pliers are actually not the most expensive models. I don't know how the price is in the States, but here the spring loaded installation pliers with VDE-grips cost round about 40€ (49 US$) including 19% VAT. The most expensive model made by Knipex is the "ecrimp", battery operated crimping tool with exchangable dies. Price is 1149€ (~1400 $). That's not a tools for a tradesman, handyman or something into this direction. This is designed for industrial use if you're performing lots and lots of crimps and doing nothing other that day...

Thanks for the video. I always enjoy your stuff. I have both the Knipex 13-82-8 pliers and the Klein Universal pliers without the crimpers (J206-8C with the self-opening spring removed). I bought the Knipex first but was surprised when I discovered that the wider duck bill style tip did not work well when closing wire loops around connector screws for two reasons. One, they were a bit too wide for some situations and two they are smooth and don’t grip wire particularly well - frequently slipping off. The second problem I have with the Knipex may not bother everybody. I store my pliers vertically (business end up) so I can identify them easily. I don’t wear gloves all the time and I found that the reamers on the Knipex were so sharp that I was occasionally cutting my fingers when I reached for them. I contemplated grinding off the sharp edges of the reamer, but that wouldn’t fix the other, slipping off, problem. Another advantage of the Klein pliers is that they strip more wires sizes (8-10-12-14-16 solid) and also cut and chase 6-32 and 8-32 screws. So, I settled on the Klein pliers because they worked best for what I was doing most of the time. That said, I have mostly Knipex (pliers) /Wera (Screwdrivers, wrenches & sockets) /Wiha (Screwdrivers) in my tool kit (VETO ProPac Tech-LC). BTW, the downside with the Kleins was the standard Klein complaint - too stiff out of the package and needing to be worked a while to get them opening and closing easily.

But the Kleins have a pretty wide nose as well. I think you would like the Neiko - they have a legitimate long nose, with rounded teeth to the tip which grip the wire well, and ends are perfectly sized for hooking.

Thanks, you are right. Although the Klein pliers feel a lot smaller, they are not. I measured them at the tip of the jaws. They are only 0.5MM smaller than the Knipex. I believe I have associated the slipping off as partly attributable to width when it was grip that mattered most. What model of Neiko pliers were you referencing? Was it the 02038A 6-in-1 Wire Service Tool? I just looked at this model on the web. It looks like a more evolved design than either the Knipex or the Klein pliers and it comes in around a third of the price - I wonder about the hardness/toughness of the steel. It has more wires sizes supported along with a bare/insulated crimper.

Yes - you've found the Neiko I was describing. I prefer it for the combo of functions - but it could be better too! Its nice that it has a shear-type cutter like the Knipex, but it would be nice if it was a little bit bigger to easily cut flat american plastic shielded wire (romex) - and frankly it could give up a little bit of the long nose length, or one of the stripper holes to do lengthen the cutter. As far as quality, its made in china and I'm sure Knipex's quality is better. But generally I found the quality to be very high. Flaws would be the tip of the long nose can deflect if twisting on something that won't give - which is a characteristic of most long nose pliers; and I find you can have the grips start to slide off if you are pulling really hard on them, I probably should glue them.

Methinks the curved knives are mostly designed for round cables, reducing the flattening of them. The outer edges would mostly be for rounding holes in plastic boxes, not metallic. So they are designed for european usage scenarios. Adding trascription was gold, as I can´t listen to close-mic´d whispering.

If they made these but with a wider head then they'd sell even more. Biggest deter from these pliers and alot of Japanese pliers are the smaller heads which can make twisting more than one piece of stranded or solid core together really difficult

I seriously looked at this 6 months ago when I was looking for an electricians pliers. I could forgive them the two stripping sizes - these are what you'll use for most building wiring. But the deal killer for me was the lack of threaded bolt cutting holes. They really should have expanded the area between the bolt and the handles to fit those, and just went ahead and moved the crimper back there so it would be closer to the bolt and have more leverage. This would have added maybe an inch to the total length which would have added the leverage you mentioned when comparing to the lineman handles. If like me you want to stay away from cheaper stamped electrician pliers Klein also has a forged multi function electricians pliers which is different featured than these - more stripping sizes, and the bolt cutters, but omits the crimpers. Milwaukee sells a very similar forged electrical pliers also w/o crimpers. I ended up getting a relatively inexpensive forged multi-function pliers from Neiko which was very nicely featured - pliers, nut grabber, 6 strippers, shear style cable cutters, bolt cutters, and crimpers (no reaming); and closer to the profile of an ordinary 8" long nose pliers. Look it up - its a good value, and good functions. Like the Knipex you can tell it takes a lot of post forging machining, and I felt the quality was very high. You ought to do a comparison between these three, and maybe throw in a stamped unit for the sake of breadth.

They were designed for the german market and here you don't need to cut hard bolts as an electrician. The only bolts you sometimes need to cut are the self tapping screws that hold outlets or switches in the box. The metal what they're made of is so soft, you can cut them with diagonal cutters. But I've switched over to a pair of Lineman's for the job of cutting these. German outlets and switches have keyholes, so you can cut all your bolts, screw them partially into the box and install the outlets afterwards. But only after the plaster guys finished their work.

That's interesting how differences in electrical device hardware leads to different tools. The north american machine screws that are typical of electrical work - 6-32 and 8-32 are also typically soft enough to cut with diagonal cutters, but this often spoils the threads, and so north american electrical pliers almost always have threaded screw shears built in that preserve the thread and allow you to use the screw without any fussing over the cut end. Knipex has a good tool here, but if they want to promote it for north america it really should have the screw cutters. Just marking the wire strippers with the north american sizes is not enough.

Knipex is performing much better in the US than Klein over here. Klein tries to sell wire strippers with AWG only here....that's much worse! AWG wire strippers are practically unusable here in Europe. We use the cross-sectional area of the conductor in square-mm for the dimension of the wire. And yes, the threads of machined screws are ruined very fast. But with their Lineman's Klein could be successful. Lineman's are unusual here, we normally use combination pliers instead. Knipex also sells their Lineman's here, but not the insulated (VDE) version. They're manufacturing this model for the US market only. Klein is the only manufacturer selling insulated Lineman's with the VDE-certification here in Germany.

Ha! Well, typical american hubris, thinking the rest of the world should follow their lead. In any case Knipex shouldn't be following that mode. They have the space on the joint for screw shears, and they should move the crimper to the back where it will have some strength, and that will give them space for one more wire stripping position - they can do 14-12-10.

A third stripper would be a good idea! In most cases the 1.5 (actually it is 0.75 up to 1.5, 0.75 is for some cords of appliances with a smaller demand) and the 2.5mm² are sufficient, but some months ago for a specific work I needed the next larger size, 4mm²...

I'm not an electrician, but I'd want the option to strip 10 gauge. I don't like the location and width of those crimps. It doesn't look like it would work well with Sta-Kon terminals.

The crimper is for ferrules only. The usage of ferrules on fine-stranded wires is mandatory here, tinning them with a solder iron and then put them into a terminal is banned here for round about 40 years.

The solder deforms under pressure, and in a screw-type terminal after some time it will become a loose connection, because the screw of the terminal remains were it was tightend but the solder still flows very slow, even if it's cold. And loose connections are getting warm, so warm they could start a fire. On the left side the way the terminal should look, on the right side you can see what happens if you solder the fine-stranded wires and put them into such a terminal: files.elv.com/bilder/elvexpertenwissen/normal/fliessen_verzinnte_adern_01.jpg The screws are totally molded in, so your only option is to cut the wire. If you're using soldered fine-stranded wires in spring loaded terminals the solder will deform so much, you'll have difficulties of removing it from the terminal. But in this case there'll be no contact problem through the spring loaded mechanism of the connector. The ferrules are made of electrolytic copper (for a high purity) and are tin-plated. Here in Germany using these ferrules in screw-type terminals is mandatory, in the US they're only recommended. If you use WAGO connectors 221 or 222 it's not necessary to use anything (ferrules or solder). Just open the lever, strip the wire about 11mm, put it into the opening and close the lever.

I only use these to cut cable or larger guage wire for that purpose they work great. Needlenose is I guess ok. Striping fiture that I bought these for is useless. At least my unit is ripping not striping the wire not smooth at all. Not for USA market. I would buy cable cutters from knipex. These pliers are not being used often.

I know this is an old video but sins I have worked along electricians and helped a lot, I will say that that tool is almost useless. 1) You work with a lot of different sizes of cable, so you have to use a separate tool for the rest, also it's very hard for your wrist, to strip wire in this fashion. 2) Any marking in a lead is a no no and you will automatically redo the work. 3) the tip is to big, almost useless to get wires into fittings. 4) No great way to grab a pull string for wiring, like there is on the lines man pliers. 5) The worst part, you will use that single tool constant, instead of shere the usage among different pliers and do any of the functions break, have you suddently lost all the functions. In the end, there are a great reason for why electricians often use special tools for each task. :-)
