To do the invisible ribbed bind-off, cut a long tail of at least 6 times the circumference of the project you want to bind off. Thread the tail on a tapestry needle.
Set-Up:
- go purlwise into stitch 1 (the stitch closest to the needle-tip)
- go knitwise FROM THE BACK into stitch 2.
Identify stitches 1, 2, 3, and 4. These labels do not change until you finish the repeat.
Repeat:
1) go knitwise into stitch 1, remove stitch from needle
2) go purlwise into stitch 3
3) go purlwise into stitch 2, remove stitch from needle
4) go knitwise FROM THE BACK into stitch 4
An easy mantra to repeat:
1) knit off purl,
2) purl off knit

Excellent, steps broken down into bite sized, repeated slowly enough to pick it up, but not too slow. Thank you!

You saved me!I finally cast off my final sleeve of a vest which I have started like more than 4years ago, didn't know what that kind of cast off is called, and I have forgotten how to cast off the same method I have used many years back. Now I know, it's invisible cast off. Thanks a million, I finally finished the vest, now my hubby can use it for our coming Paris trip

That is the neatest, prettiest bind off ever! The top edge is smooth and not flared out, also very stretchy. Your video (as always) explains this so very well!! Thanks so much for taking the time to do this. Now just need one for a 2X 2 rib so it looks as pretty.

This tutorial was invaluable in learning to do this across a sweater ribbed in 1x1. The only thing I would add is that it needs to start with a purl otherwise the steps don't work on flat knitting.
@yarnbite6867

I agree. I pulled a knot on my first knit stitch so I could start with a purl. I also thought about working the first 2 stitches together, but not until half way through did it occur to me. What did you end up doing?

Somewhere else on YT this technique is called "tubular bindoff" because it looks like tubular cast on. You can't tell which is which unless you made it yourself. It looks very neat. Good tutorial.

I just want to say that this bind off is my new favorite. I used it to finish the neck on two sweaters yesterday and it looks so neat and professional. It's got just the right stretch for my projects. It's also very easy to remember, or get into the rhythm as you describe it, easy to fix any mistakes and I bet if I had to undo it, it shouldn't be hard either. Great work. I'll link my project to you on ravelry except I don't know how to do that!

@cathyh1223 Hi Cathy! The invisible ribbed bind-off for 2x2 rib is a little different, and I don't have a video of it yet. It's on my list! There is a great illustrated tutorial in the Fall 2008 Interweave Knits if you happen to have back-issues of that magazine. There are other stretchy bind-offs that you can do, but none of them are invisible like this one. I'm sorry I don't have a video for you!

So, conceptually this is the kitchener stitch, but instead of grafting two pieces together, we're grafting the column of knits to the column of purls. Is that right?
