In this video I demonstrate how to get started using the magic loop technique to knit a small-circumference tube with a long circular needle.
The needles used in my sample are Knitter's Pride Zing from an interchangeable set.
My nail polish is by Gelish, color “Mauve Your Feet”.

As a beginner I wanted to make a hat in the round primarily because I can’t sew up yet, and even though others wouldn’t notice I was in the mindset that they could. I purchased a starter pack of interchangeable needles that came in three sizes with three cable sizes. I came across some literature and a video to put the cables in hot water to uncurl them which I did. I found my hat I wanted to knit and wrote down the plan of action. So I’m ready!! Nope I wasn’t ready….I just presumed that the small cable was going to be nice and neat and full and kinda easy to do. Boy was I wrong. I was at the point of either cutting them up or strangling myself with them! Then I heard of magic loop. So off I went again poised and ready. Nope I just didn’t get it no iota of anything. I carried on looking and watching video after video and I realised that the longer cord was the way to go. So here we go again and another fail. Then I watched your tutorial and bingo! Yey I get now that I can just just yank up the yarn and off I go. I also realised that I was trying to do it with the working needle and yarn on the right hand side ( needles pointing upwards cable abreast to myself)like in straight knitting! I think that was the major reason why I was failing and I was still looking at empty needles 12hrs later (I kid you not) and a pile of curly wasted yarn! I will admit sometimes I find your tutorials difficult to understand let alone execute but this one was absolutely magic….. Thank you for teaching us how to knit. Take Care & Keep Safe.

Thanks... I tried ML.. and I didn’t like all that cord hanging around, and felt confused. watched your first video, which was very good.. But.. I have small hands: and the whole thing felt so awkward... Even though SPN’s can be fiddle, I love my 16 and 9 inch needles.. I have a Knit Picks Options set of 16 inch interchangeable, and am considering getting the beautiful Zing set... They are gorgeous... Inalso have some fixed ChaiGoo Red Lace needles, as well as some HiyaHiya ones.. I love my growing collection, as most of my knitting is charity hat knitting, vhich I love doing.. Thanks fir this video... I might give Magic Loop another try... Or maybe not.😊 Sandy from Cincinnati ❤️❤️😎

Hi Staci, thanks for your videos and nice tips on knitting. I notice you don't have a video on Jenny's surprisingly stretchy bind off yet, so I'd like to suggest this to you just as an idea to add to your repertoire. You see, I've tried your very stretchy bind off on my sock samples and it always didn't work for me, too flare out, don't know if it's a yarn thing, wool yarn just isn't that common in my place, tropical country, if there are, they're usually pricey, as a result, I end up using acrylic yarn most of the time. And back to the bind off, because the bind off you always use for socks knitting didn't work for my case, I ended up using the Jenny surprisingly stretchy bind off, which I find most suitable, it doesn't flare yet stretchy, but because of the YO, it does like fluted abit, perhaps if you do would like to hear you thoughts about it. Thanks

This has been a LIFE SAVER! Knitting my very first sweater, top down raglan, and I couldn’t even get past casting on my German twists to even start the neck! Now I can thanks to this. Finally someone who answered all of my questions about working in the round. I was having such difficulty because every video I saw, people were using 3” needles, and I prefer 4-5”, plus my cord was 30” to begin with and I didn’t have enough cast ons to start like in other videos. This helps so much! Truly a life saver!

Hi, thank you for your tips - I find your videos really informative. I'm working on a project for a men's pair of gloves, but I do not know where to start especially when it comes to working the fingers and the thumb. Your sock heel videos are really useful, do you already have something similar for gloves at all, or is it maybe something which can be explored in figure videos?
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I have this Learn to Knit Gloves tutorial here: verypink.com/2011/07/21/learn-to-knit-gloves/ You asked this question on a magic loop video - if you're question is if I have a video on gloves using magic loop, I don't. I actually don't recommend magic loop for glove fingers, it can be done, but using double-pointed needles is easier for most people when there are so few stitches on the needles.

So glad to find your tutorial. I ran into a problem....you can't find needles smaller than a US 4. I'm working with lace yarn and knitting in the round with double pointed needles. I had wanted to use the Majic circle needles, but can't find them in 1,2 or 3 sizes. Bummer!

Hi Staci, I'm thinking of using magic loop to knit TWO sleeves at a time on a raglan top-down sweater pattern (Rolling Rock by Thea Coleman). I've never done magic loop OR knitting two sleeves at the same time, so I'm a little nervous. My question is: will I be able to change the place where my extra cable comes out every row or so, in order to avoid that stretchy space between stitches that happens in that gap? Do you know what I mean? When I do my sleeves on DPNs, when I have knitted all my stitches off my left needle on to my right needle, and my left needle is freed, before going on to insert it back in and knit off the next needle, I'll knit two stitches off the NEXT left needle onto my right needle. I do that to avoid the wonky gap that can appear in the space where I change DPNs. Does that make sense? Do you think I can avoid that wonky gap when working two sleeves at a time in magic loop? Thanks!
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 6 жыл бұрын
Yes, I think I understand your question...and yes, you can keep moving the gap where the extra cord pokes out. This video explains it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z57UeqSIma-WbJo

I think that I have maybe purchases needles that have a very short loop. When I try to tug on the work to get the working yarn closer to the piece, it won’t bend properly because the plastic loop is so small. I guess I’ll need longer circular needles lol

Hi Staci! Thanks for another great video! I'm pretty seasoned at working Magic Loop (although for socks, I'm a 9 inch gal, all the way!!), but lately I've heard of something called a "Traveling Loop", and I just can't seem to find out much about it. It seems that it's kind of like ML, but maybe there is only ONE loop, instead of two? Can you help clear this up for me please? Thank you so much, and keep up the fabulous work!

How do you keep from the stitches twisting. The first it’s ok. But the second row its twistind
@verypinkknits
@verypinkknits 4 жыл бұрын
You have to be careful that it isn't twisted when you join in the round, and that it doesn't twist at the beginning of the second round. After that, there is usually too much fabric to get twisted. Not getting twisted is a matter of checking, and double checking at the beginning of the round.

Okay Staci, on a more positive note, I'm wondering what I'm doing wrong while I'm knitting magic loop. I have a hole and I don't know how or what I did it. I think that I accidentally passed a stitch, not dropped but passed it to keep from dropping it. The thing is, I don't remember doing it. How can I keep from making these silly mistakes?

Sorry - without seeing your work, I really can't say. It may have nothing to do with the fact that you're working in magic loop. You might want to visit your local yarn shop to let them see your knitting, and they can give you advice to what might be going on.

Actually, it's in the middle of the work. That's why it's so perplexing to me. I think what I did was passed a stitch without knitting it. I'm at a loss as to what happened.
