A lot of em in newer times just wanna live in peace somewhere away from humans - which is fair after all they have done to the mutants. (although I still find it funny how they are split into humans and mutants when mutants are humans too - but alas that's the point, isn't it.) He sill did do a lot of horrible stuff though so I get it. A bit like Venom who also went from dude that killed a lot of people to "hero". I always found it kinda ironic that they made a holocaust survivor into a mutant nazi like extremist. I am kinda glad they are trying to move away from his more extreme traits.
