In Anglo-Saxon England, some 1,000 to 1,500 years ago, every man and woman carried a knife called a seax. They were all sorts of shapes but one popular one was similar to the Bowie knife. In fact the best warriors would use a longer version, a blade of about two foot, as a short sword to show just how good a fighter they were.

Oh it gets better than that Big Blue. Why? Because the Saxons were named after the seax that they carried. It is where the word Saxon comes from. As for Anglo (from Anglia), this also related to a spear like weapon. As a rule of thumb, any people named after not one, but two, deadly weapons is a people worth watching out for. We are descended from them and they populated the West.

I had Gil Hibben make me a really beautiful custom knife years ago and I love that thing to death. Sad part is, even though it's a Bowie style, it probably wouldn't fit well in a character since the blade is more polished and the handle is a little more modern. I only mention this because I advise people to really look into the history if they're looking for a knife to represent a certain era. The knife may be beautiful but you obviously want to make sure it's accurate too.

Loved this video. I carry a kukri and a home made spike as my EDC blades. The kukri is like a more versatile ax and the spike is a surprise weapon. But my buck folder and Kershaw onion are my work blades. My buddy is a old hickory blade man. Those things are dang near indestructible. Great video.

Thank you guys so much I was wondering what kind of folders were used during the old west. Pretty much EVERYONE I know has heard of the Bowie knife, hell my mother got me one as a gift once due to her love of the old west, but no one I know really talks about the folders back then.

Folding knives go back to at least the Romans, but the back spring didn’t appear until the 1600’s. Kansas City has a museum of the steamboat Arabia that sank and ended up buried. It’s entire cargo survived including a buttload of fixed and folding blade knives. Most look like they could still be used they are so well preserved. The boat went down in the 1850’s. There are pics of the knives on Google. Pretty nifty.

Neck knives were often patch knives. Being worn around the neck puts it right by the muzzle if you're loading a rifle.

@@lordeden1475 You cannot say with absolute certainty that they were not used for cutting patches. Patches were pre cut - until you ran out of pre cut patches... I'm always dubious when people make these absolute statements about history. Whatever the subject, whatever the activity, there was always someone doing it differently or who had a different style to what was mainstream at that time. For example - I'm always being told that men never had long hair before the 1960's, without exception. More than once I've been told that men didn't have long hair in the old west. Buffalo Bill & Pistol Pete sure as hell did & there are plenty of other pictures showing men with hair down by their shoulders too. Don't fall into the trap of absolutism. There is almost always an example that will prove you wrong.

Some knife historians believe the original Bowie knife was commissioned by James Bowie's brother, Rezin, and made by a man named Jessie Clift. The knife featured a straight, unsharpened back and curved tip and had essentially no hand guard on a simple handle. Later versions had significant modifications but can still be referred to as Bowie knives.

hans granheim Although the Musso Bowie from that era did have a clip point and a guard as did the Seguin Bowie and some others. There is some thought that Jim Bowie May have had as many as fourteen different knives in his lifetime all of which came to be called ‘Bowie Knives’ even if some of them technically weren’t.

Im a US Navy veteran . Back in the '90s (1990s , I'm not that old !) I bought a Cold Steel Trailmaster Bowie with the black rubber handle and black cordura nylon sheath . Since then I've worn out the handle and sheath and replaced them . I made a coffin shaped handle out of teak wood and an old timey leather sheath for her . Now she looks like a California Bowie and would probably pass muster with the reenactment judges . I don't think many old west knives had handles made of teak , as it is a wood usually used on ships . But I can imagine a sailor becoming a frontiersman and bringing some of his maritime experience with him . I think of Matthew Quigley sailing to Australia on a ship . I reckon he must have learned a lot from the sailors during his time at sea . Imagine pirates attacking the ship Matt was on , then he snipes them from the quarterdeck . Well Sir , you just got yourself a new subscriber .

A lot of mountain men carried knives made by Green River cutlery . Which specialised in butcher knives. Which makes sense because 80% of what they would use a knife for would be skinning and butchering .

Seen some old timers with little mini knives in their bolo ties, when I was a boy. Can't find any info online about them nowadays. Found a traditional celtic neck knife that's basically just a blade on a ring. Stuck it sheath and all in my coin pocket. But it has me wanting a slick little blade to wear on a neck tie for when I'm not at work and I can dress how I want to, without hiding my knives from the customers.

Arizona Ghostriders I bought a custom Haag Bowie knife at a knife show we had down in Texas, it was far more expensive than any other store bought Bowie I’ve ever bought $275 (originally $300 but I got a little discount on it) It was pricey but it’s the most beautiful knife I’ve ever gotten. 1095 high carbon with a full tang Texas Pecan handle and a stainless steel guard. It’s maker really put a lot of love into that knife. 😊

Hey, Santee. In the movie “El Dorado” a young James Caan keeps a knife at the back of his neck and in the older Jonah Hex-comics, Jonah does the same. I’m wondering if that is historically accurate and how they kept the knives by the height of the collar without it creeping down the back of the shirt?

I like the sgein dubh ( scottish)for the short run ,my barlow in my pocket , and the boot knife ( with tie down scabbard). For skinning I use my 8in schrade. Veggies chop well with a french knife .

Fascinating- I never knew there so many different kinds of knives. For me, my favourite is the #2 Ex-Acto with a #11 blade. I do have a nice bone-handled pocket knife called an "Uncle henry" that I got at the Imperial-Schrade factory in New York about 30 years ago. I was there to inspect the boilers and asked for a free sample and they gave it to me. It was an interesting place, there were rows of desks with women at each one, assembling the knives with tiny rivets, using hammers and small precise tools. They also had an exhibit of various knives they had given to several Presidents such as Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush.

I just got one of those new Becker Knife and Tool-kabar reproductions of the Kepheart. Becker recently came upon the only other kepheart knife known and he with the Kabar company have started making exact recreations of them. It does use newer style rivets for the tang instead of the traditional brass but still a wonderful blade. Very sharp in the box and from a distance looks accurate enough for a show. If you're a knife guy you should look into one!

I have the Cold Steel Laredo (10.5" blade) and a Windlass Primitive (13", aka "Musso Bowie). BTW, no Bowie that has a brass back stkrip is an authentic 19th century Bowie, that was apparently a speculation of Thorpe which got incorporated into Paul Wellman's _The Iron Mistress_

Saw a folding knife for sale in tombstone that had pair of pliers built into it, wasn't pretty and had seen hard service. Not sure if it was frontier vintage but struck me as an early attempt at a multi tool, I'm thinking it would come in dang handy on the trail.

I did recall it had some sedation on the back blade . The one you showed hasn't??? Want to clear this up for a confused Brit ( that's not hard to do btw )...

Mustang the original Bowie knife may never be found, but the one with the brass on the ridge was described in 1830’s accounts regarding the knife. Sheffield knife makers took that design and made variations to please the masses.

GREAT VIDEO! Do you have any idea what knife Vigo Mortensen used in Hidalgo. It had a wood handle fixed blade in leather sheath. He also carried a Colt Peacemaker. He was offered $10,000. for the Colt by the Sheik. If you haven't seen the movie rent or buy it. Every time my wife & I can't think of anything to watch that we both like HIDALGO GO's in the DVD player.

+Arizona Ghostriders Thanks for the correction. I'm not a computer guy. Now that I think about it he had 2 knives the bigger one he carried on his belt and a smaller one he had hidden that he threw at the guy when he was tied to a chair.

His knife (the one he throws at the guy) looks to be a bowie. You can see the blade as he wipes the blood off on his pant leg.

It's called a Missouri Belt Knife. This one is carbon steel with a bone handle.

I've long been intrigued by the "Seguin Bowie." Not sure if that's its official name, but it was a Bowie with a saber grip and an eagle's head pommel. There's a portrait of Bowie in he's holding one, and in Jack Jackson's graphic novel about Juan Seguin, there's a picture of Juan Seguin holding one, presumably a gift from his pal James Bowie.

Yeah, that's a cool one. By the Old West era (post-Civil War) those really big knives were not very common.

I actually own a couple of knives made in the 1900's. Great steel, unlike a lot of modern production, and reproduction knives.

That was great. I appreciate good humor. More old west knives Sir. Trade knives,household knives used in the outdoors. Knives used in western movies would be great too. The knife/fork Tommy Lee Jones used in Missing. The brojen sword used by Cherokee Jack in Lonesome Dove the return. Its a beauty.
