My favourite Kemi is Detective Kemi! I enjoy watching the wheels turn in your head just as much as watching you giggling with a romance film. I've never seen anyone take notice to the "you" -> "hugh" piece before; that is a testament to your outstanding observational and perceptional skills! Glad you seemed to like this film, it's a very interesting look into these characters and how they all treated each other, while being fun the whole time.

I think the idea you mention that the monsters in his family are monsters of Harlen's creation is key to why he leaves everything to Marta. He wants her to be secure, of course, but the real reason is he trusts her to distribute and handle his wealth more than he trusts himself or the rest of the family. He knows he has used his wealth to control his family in a way that has caused damage and he believes Marta will not, because, as he says in their last conversation, all of her advice was right about what he should do with his family. In other words, he trusts Marta will know how best to help his family best.

Yes, very true Hun, he had those hopes but how realistic is it? This belief that throwing money at Marta would not alter her character? We see it ALL the time - money changes ppl - he had made a mistake in the past with his kids and he didn't try to fix - he just cut them off. If he could give himself a chance to correct his mistake why didn't he give Linda and Walt a chance? He had those same hopes and gave his children so much. Look how they turned out? He had thrown all this wealth at Marta and has not lived to see how it'll turn out. Marta could be a future Thrombey in the making - we don't know. That's why I think we should share the money. If she does not - she is just as bad as they are - trying to reap where she didn't sow.

His referring to Marta as “Watson” as well as the comment “The game is afoot.” are references to author Arthur Conan Doyle’s characters of detective Sherlock Holmes and his partner Watson. I saw someone else mention Clue, which I too think would make for a fun reaction if you’re ever interested in another mystery movie. While Clue does have a mystery you can work to unravel it’s not a movie to be taken too seriously as it’s a parody/comedy.

I don't think the characters need any compassion because they aren't in a needy position that requires any help. Linda owns her own company and Walt surely owns a home and has assets and has the ability to find a job with another publishing house. Joanie also owns her own company. Only Meg isn't in a position to help herself. There is no reason to feel sorry for them, all of them live very comfortably and have the ability to care for themselves. They don't need more money, they just want more money. But no one is entitled to anything just because they want it. A case for "compassion" could be made for the children, the rest neither need nor deserve anything. But also, they are accustomed to handouts and being taken care of, if Marta gives them anything, they will never leave her alone. Just like Harlan, they will sponge off of her for the rest of their lives if she lets them, which is why Harlan decided it was time to stop, so they would finally be able to grow as people. He wasn't being hard hearted in his choice. He said that he should have given them time instead of money, should have taught them instead of bankrolling them, encouraged them to develop their own talents and creativity instead of coasting off of his. He has realized that his children and grandchildren aren't as good people as he would like them to be because of money. He wasn't punishing them, he was trying to help them.

My family has long worked for a rich and powerful family and, so, believe me when I say: The problem with giving them half the fortune back is that people who grew up rich people are more entitled than rational! They *WILL* spend their entire half with lawyers just to make sure that you will not enjoy a cent of your half. They may lose everything, but they will still feel vindicated because an "outsider" didn't take a cent.
@melanie62954

I didn't think of that, but it totally makes sense. Also, it's not like they're being left high and dry. They are all well-off, and their anger at being left out of the will is because of greed, not need. Linda already has her business, Walt can get a new job, and Joni can sell her company or declare bankruptcy and start over. I'm certain that Marta, as her character is established in the film, would pay for Meg's college and probably help the others out (maybe reinstate Walt with the publishing company), but they definitely don't need a huge chunk of the fortune. There are so many better ways Marta could use it. I bet she starts some kind of endowment or charity in Harlan's name.

Hun, do you know how many people are handed money that misuse it? How many lottery winners that end up broke in a matter of months. You think Martha would make better financial decisions - why? Because she is liked and a poor nurse. Life doesn’t work that way. We assume the best for Martha but the worse of the Thrombeys. Linda and Walt worked hard. They deserved to have a gift from their father - an inheritance means so much more than money. It is a blessing. That’s why it hurt. Walt had managed his fathers business very well and was open to expanding it - almost like telling the 60’s dad about Instagram helping the business and he is like no I wanna go door to door. Linda idolized her father - and followed his manual - and got nothing. Not even his knives or the home she grew up in. Naahhh. That would hurt me. He made mistakes as a dad - they didn’t throw him away or rob him. His kids also deserved better.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I see what you're saying, but my assumptions about the Thrombeys and Marta are purely based on how their characters are portrayed in the film. The Thrombeys are selfish, entitled, and obtuse at the very best. Linda and Meg are the only ones the least bit sympathetic (a deleted scene reveals that even Walt was embezzling from Harlan) and Linda is already rich. Very little that Harlan left Marta is of any sentimental value, as he made his own fortune from scratch. That wasn't the house they grew up in (remember, Benoit says he bought it from a Pakistani couple in the '80s), and their only attachment to it is because of its status. Since it was Harlan's wish that Marta have his inheritance, why change it? It's not a family legacy we're talking about, it's his own hard-earned money. And we can assume that he knew Marta well enough to know she wouldn't misuse the assets. The film shows her to be smart, capable, compassionate, and responsible. Much more responsible than any of his children, with the exception of Linda.
@ScenecrlyK.S.O.
@ScenecrlyK.S.O. Жыл бұрын
Let's leave the deleted scenes out - it didn't make the cut for a reason. Let's focus on the story . Linda is rich - so? He could have left his knives or the house to her. Walt (I can't address the deleted scenes) - actively worked. If you think Marta is any better than them by taking money she did not earn or work for - then I am sorry to break it to you she is EXACTLY like them. And Harlan created another monster - oh yes. He gave his children too much and now he is repeating the same mistake. In Africa - we say - you don't know a person until you give them the world. Give a poor man money and you'll see their real character. See how men when broke stay with their wives - suddenly they are rich and they want something else. He could have set targets for his children to revamp their character before the money got to them. Yes he could. He should have set a target for Martha too - before she inherited the money. Oh well that's another script. I just couldn't do that to anyone. Harlan changed Marta's life - th least she could do was make sure that his children and grandchildren were good. I could never do that to a person who helped . NEVER, I would give them something - no matter how small. MARTA too didn't work for the wealth - so what are we saying here. We just disliked the Thrombey's and everyone wants blood. LOL. But place yourself in their shoes. Just for a moment. I LOVED talking with you Hun. As you can see I TRULY enjoyed the movie

@@melanie62954 I agree with you. This entitlement that children must own what their parents had is wrong. They are entitled to leave it to whoever they want. His children only wanted him for his money, that's the whole point, but Marta loved him not for his money but because he was funny and witty. I think it's only fair to him to leave his money to the one person who loved him enough to care about his family also.

The mom you wished to see playing a more normal role is Toni Collette, and you are right - she is FANTASTIC! Every movie she stars in she is terrific, and she seems to only be in good movies. If you'd like to see her in a more "normal" role, try the movie "Little Miss Sunshine." She's normal in the sense that she has a very harried housewife existence, with a husband who borders on failure, a suicidal gay brother, a son who has taken a vow of silence, a father who... well, no more spoilers! Suffice to say Toni Collette is the most normal person in that family. It's a comedy with some dramatic overtones, and it is a charmer. And, just like "Knives Out," it is an unforgettable movie!

A deleted scene confirms that Joni's company is broke for various reasons like people getting skin rashes from her products. Another deleted scene confirms that Walt is in debt to the wrong people - started with insider trading and then got out of hand, his cane is a result of a warning they gave him, and it's also why his racist wife is always so tense and jumpy. I wonder if she or her alt-right son know that the house was bought from a Pakistani real estate developer/billionaire, judging from some of the things they've both said I don't think they'd want much to do with the house after knowing that.

Just watched this movie a few days ago and I wanted to see your reaction 😊. I agree with you about the power of acting to change how you see someone. I think you've seen Jamie Lee Curtis (Linda) in Trading Places. If not, you should watch it, it is very good. She's also in A Fish called Wanda, which is also recommended. About Marta's decision about whether to take the money, I think she was still processing everything when Meg called. She hadn't has any time alone yet; Ransom was hounding her to tell her story since he took her from the house. I don't think she had yet decided what to do, but when Meg gave her a specific worry about her tuition, Marta naturally tried to reassure her. It just so happened to be the same words that the family had used to her, Marta, earlier. Meg and the family didn’t realize that she didn’t have time to process everything and make a decision because they didn’t know Ransom was hounding her, so they thought she had decided to keep the money, but Marta didn’t even tell her Mother and Sister about it that night. Of course, after all the trauma, Marta could just keep it, and Harlan probably would have wanted her to, but she's probably the kind of person who would split it with them... 😊 I do agree with you that parents need to take some responsibility for their children being the people they raised. Children are their own selves, first and foremost, but they are also the result of the parents "parenting", and parents should acknowledge that too. What a messed up family 😊 but then aren't we all a little messed up 😉

Yes he was Holmes and she was his Watson. This is all I have to say about his Will, as a resident of the US it is not your money because it is your family. It is only your money if you are named in the will. So you can spend all of the time in the world being angry about not receiving money that was never yours to begin with, that you put zero effort in to earning, and that the person who passed away did not want you to have any of it. That’s just not worth it in my eyes. I’d rather make my own money, and leave it to the people I love.

I have that mug! It's huge, so I use it for soup. I also have a sweatshirt of Ransom with "Eat Sh*t" (uncensored) under his picture 😂 As far as the movie and the inheritance, I don't think his kids deserved it and he was right to leave it all to Marta. They definitely weren't going to help her, so why should she do anything for them? Harlan earned that money and it was up to him who he gave it to. And none of them actually started on their own like he did. He helped them all out one way or another and not one of them appreciated it. In fact, they all got offended when he refused to help any further. And I use "help" loosely. They assumed he'd always give them handouts and refused to do anything for themselves. They're the definition of spoiled rich brats. And he did it out of love. He wanted them to figure it out on their own instead of thinking that he'd always be there for them and give them whatever they wanted especially with the inheritance. Marta never asked him for anything nor even cared that he had money even though her family was struggling. Therefore he felt she was more worthy of it. Just because they're his children doesn't mean they deserved anything.

Harian earned his money but he had help along the way. You could be married to a gifted artist but Hunnies if your husbands SALES skills made you millions - YOU HAD HELP! Walt had great business skills that brought his fathers books more money and was working on NETFLIX deal. Didn't you hear all that? So what if he (Harian) helped them - THEY ARE HIS CHILDREN - my father paid my tuition fees - when I was a student - does he pay my bills now? NO. Parents do what they are supposed to do - the question is, did they improve on it. And the answer is YES. Linda is just as rich and Walt brought the book company more wealth with his PR - if he had known it would not go to him, he probably would have focused on his thing. How do you know Martha never asked - the story didn't say .. Linda didn't ask, Walt made requests to advance the company. Yes exclude the other relatives BUT HIS CHILDREN LINDA AND WALT deserved something.

Why do people think it's okay to second guess or change someone's last wishes? If a will is legal, then why do people think they have the right to fight it? Harlan had all his faculties, he was completely lucid and in his right mind. If he wanted to leave everything to Marta, that was his wish. No one has the right to deny that. Sure, Marta could share the wealth but she's in no way responsible for what Harlan did. Kemi, family members aren't owed anything simply for being family. It's interesting to me that so many people think that they should get something simply because they are family. I think Harlan was absolutely right to do as he did though it would have been far better had he done it years before. Those people were just riding his coat tails and doing nothing except living off him and his fame and wealth. I love that you're so soft hearted, but Walt (had he an ounce of sense) would have socked away some money, made some sensible investments and not have been quite so devastated by being fired. Marta deserved the money for being there for Harlan, his nurse and friend. He didn't turn to family or confide in any of them, did he? Nope! But being soft hearted herself, Marta maybe gave the family (at least Meg) something later. I always like when people get what they deserve (in the case of Harlan's family? Nothing). Fun movie, good story, great acting (especially Craig and that accent!)

Although I actually write murder mysteries, I did not get the killer in this one. I personally felt that there were way too many clues and way too many suspects. What was interesting, however, from a technical standpoint was how much screen time each was given. Typically, the villain is given a lot of screen time. This cancels out much of the cast.

I'd give the family some money. Part of me would want to follow Harlan's wishes and cut everyone off as planned. But if I had $60 million in cash, I would probably be 'generous' and give each child $2-3 million, and leave it up to them to decide how to split it within their families - Linda, Walt and (Neil's widow) Joni. (Well, maybe I'd split Joni's part and give to Meg directly...) I'd give them something to just leave me alone; I'd actually make that a condition of them getting anything. I'd keep the house. I might keep the publishing company - either have someone run it for me (not Walt) in Harlan's honor, as I learned the business, or merge it with another company. The reason I'd give the family some of the money is because, although Harlan was cutting them off, he didn't plan to die that night. The next morning he would have dealt with the fallout of actions from earlier in the day. He would have had someone other than Walt run his publishing company going forward. He would have told Linda about Richard's affair. Joni's money situation would have come to light in the family. But he would have been there to try and smooth the ruffled feathers. As far as we know, Ransom wouldn't have been totally cut off - just out of the will, and that was a 'future' situation since Harlan would have still been alive.

I wish I saw this live! This was a good one. I would respect the wishes. If he had left his entire fortune to an animal shelter I think your argument would be different! On the other side of the coin, as a Thromby, having tried multiple different routes to correct "mistakes" you might have made, you carefully word this will because you want your wishes followed, right? The whole point of a will is so people know what to do with your stuff (read 'money' if you're a thromby, okay?) when you kick it. And if he wanted them to have the money, they would have the money. The only person I feel bad for is the granddaughter. I'd want her to finish school at least. Maaaaybe I'd pay for the younger grandson's tuition if he agreed to start and complete some form of therapy 😂 that kid is taking hot mess express to adulthood.

But HE didn't WANT his family to have ANY of the inheritance. He wanted Marta, and only Marta, to have it. Shouldn't HIS dying wishes be fulfilled? And besides, that family is actually a pretty awful bunch of people - aside from the granddaughter.

Lol.. no. Who was awful>Linda? Walt? his children were average - he wasn't perfect either. Should they be judged because they had corrupt spouses. What of Meg? What did she ever do to hurt grandpa? Awful is trying to hurt me or kill me for my money - not working hard in and for my company to make my company better (Walt). Not building another sister company from scratch to billions (Linda) . We are judging the children harshly but look at it strictly - what evil did they do? The bad eggs were Richard and Ransom - Jacob was doing what teens do excluding the carcass (lol). Meg went to school no criminal record, dui etc

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I feel like Linda is the least despicable of the family members but she pretends to be self made while her father gave her tons of money to start her business. She’s indirectly rude to Marta throughout the entire movie and she raised a son capable of murder. You said the burden of how a child turns out falls somewhat on the parent and I agree. He didn’t get that way on his own. Walt on the other hand was CEO of his fathers company in name only. His father wouldn’t even allow him to make movie deals for his books. He almost seemed to be waiting for his father to die so he could do what he wanted with his fathers work. He also made threats to Marta about revealing her mothers secret to everyone in order to keep his hand on his fathers money. I’d like to believe Marta kept what she needed of the money and gave the rest to charities who really needed the money and let the Thrombey’s make their own way. They aren’t guaranteed money just because of their bloodline. None of them deserved the inheritance because none of them even really knew their father. I mean this is all only in my opinion. I don’t mean to insinuate you’re wrong in your opinion. You’re looking at the situation with different eyes.

No please - I ALWAYS always feel VERY free to speak your mind on this channel _ as long as you are courteous - I have no issues. We can disagree in kindness. I LOVE TALKING TO PEOPLE. Okay - so I always like to place myself in other peoples shoes. With Linda - You do know that billionaires have handed money to their children and they failed. A successful business takes hardwork, grit and MORE HARDWORK - my father paid for my tuition - but my grades were my own - does that mean - he made me? NO. Linda was in no way lazy. Yes some people are rude - I am sure you have been rude to people - should you lose your inheritance for that? NO. Ransome is not a reflection of his parents - anyone is capable of murder when pushed to the wall. Ransome dug his own grave. If you think that Linda and Richard are to blame for Ransome - that means Harlan is to blame for his children and his death was his Karma. Walt - worked for his fathers company - we don't see anything in the film that said he was a thief. Now imagine a father owning a hospital - and he had 2 sons and a daughter. One died - leaving SON B. The sister already has a company. So you think - Oh let me handle my father's estate - SON B goes to medical school - works hard for the company for yearsssss (when you could have built your own empire) - you stay dedicated to the family business only for your dad to say - NO I cut you off. I was like why didn't you cut me off when I was 30years old - when I could have built something of my own. Why did you let me stay in your company? Did you use me? Did you use my youth? - Do you seee how painful that is. Everyone keeps forgetting that WALT issued those threats AFTER the inheritance was read - he made those threats when the inheritance went to Marta and I would have done worse - so would you. We SEE it all the time in HOLLYWOOD. how older men marry their nurses and leave their children with nothing - Please lets not pretend to be righteous. You would have FOUGHT Marta too. So why are we shocked that they screamed. We all like Marta because the script - played it out that way but she could have VERY bad financial knowledge. She could run the company and estate to the ground - look at lottery winners - you think they WIN this money and automatically make the best decisions? Nah. We all like Marta - but please let's be fair. Harlan was emotional and he punished his children for something he was complacent about. What kind of woman takes that much of something she didn't earn or work for? She was treated with kindness by her boss and she should return that kindness. Yes keep some Money but give them too - like insist on the children having a TF - people go to therapy - help Walt start his company etc. I could not live with myself if I abandoned the children of the man who helped me - No matter what.

@@ScenecrlyK.S.O. I can see where you’re coming from. I feel that the movie makes the family look like the money is the only thing that matters to them and that’s what bothers me. I would hope if Marta were to help them out that they would learn from their past behavior and be grateful about having what they have because they didn’t seem to realize how good they had it in my opinion. I wouldn’t be opposed to a scenario where after some time, once they’ve shown they truly cared about more than the money, Marta would help them out. She seemed like the type of person who would help if given the chance and proper circumstances. I personally didn’t feel like Linda cared that she had lost her inheritance after the initial shock of finding out it went to Marta. At the end of the film she seemed to be more concerned with her husbands philandering. She was successful anyway and probably didn’t need the money. I still feel Harlan was right in cutting everyone else off from his own personal interactions with the family. And you’re right, the reason the kids were the way they were was because of Harlan as well. I feel like that’s a lot of the reason he cut them out. He knew that his children only cared about the money (in my opinion) so he took it away. If they showed a willingness to change their behavior, I’d love for Marta to help them. Especially the girl with her school.

The various family members assume Marta is an immigrant and they kept getting Marta Cabrera's cultural heritage wrong (Linda saying she was from Ecuador, Richard saying she was from Paraguay, Ransom saying she was Brazilian...). While it is never mentioned in the movie, according to Rian Johnson (who wrote the script in addition to directing), her family comes from Cuba, matching the cultural heritage of Ana de Armis, the actress who played Marta. Also, Marta was actually born in Boston, Massachusetts after her mother came to the US illegally, meaning that Marta is a naturally born US Citizen and not an immigrant at all. She retains a Spanish accent because she grew up raised by a woman whose first language is Spanish, but nevertheless is an American by birth. Which means she really is an anchor baby, just like Jacob (the youngest of the grandchildren, the so-called "Nazi child") accused her of being.

If I were Marta I'd give them the house and 50% of the money inherited distributed among his kids. Seems fair given his will left EVERYTHING to her, and then they can figure out the logistics themselves. Plus his stories will now be obvs turned into movies, so she would be smart to negotiate a percentage of the films gross.

I agree TOTALLY with the 50% - I think he said he didn't want the movie deal, however being Kind does not translate to Financial Wisdom. She might hire the wrong people etc ( see what happened to Toni Braxton) - I think she could learn from Linda - if they worked together.

Kemi thank you for this reaction! Knives Out is definitely one of the best mystery films especially when you want to root for Marta to get away with it and your shown Ransom as the true “murderer”. In my opinion, I think Marta would’ve keep the house, the rights to the books, and 50% of the inheritance. If anyone, give the other 50% to Meg, since she was the only decent family member. Linda would’ve been another if she hadn’t responded harshly to Marta. Marta was unaware of the will and didn’t even care about the money. If the family’s had been more rational and allowed her to processed the news, an arrangement would have been made. The Glass Onion is definitely worth the watch and if wish I highly suggest these mystery films: Enola Holmes 1-2, Murder Mystery, and CLUE. 😵🩸🔪😱🤔
