In this video, Alan and Jon share a collection of knives they carry in their EDC bags and other bags and the reasons why they prefer them over the alternatives.
If you're in the market for a new blade, check out this great blade review done by two of our experts.

I used to be like "whatever, who needs a knife on them at all times?". Right before Thanksgiving, believe it or not I found a Leatherman Rev Multitool. I saw it was one of cheapest and least liked online for some reason, so I thought "meh here is my first EDC blade I guess". I cannot believe how much I use it. Probably 3 times a week I have to open some package. During a Christmas dinner a screwdriver was needed for a kids toy to be assembled and boom I had a solution. Also needed the pliers and wire cutters a few occasions. Never again will I go without some multi tool and blade with me.

The first Benchmade Griptilian I purchased, was the one with the tanto blade. I still have it, but the one I edc now, is another Griptilian with the drop point blade. Both of these are non serrated. These have served me extremely well, in the 2 to 3 years I've had those knives. Also, I have the fixed blade straight/non serrated Arvensis for my survival/bug out pack that I keep in my semi truck.

Hi guys, I chuck out a few pennies as we go along! 2:30 EDC For the last 40 years or so I've carried a knife (of sorts) every single day (up till my arrival in the UK. Now I have to be very careful about that! For nearly all that time that knife has been a Victorinox of one or other model, and they have served me extremely well. [Note: You mention the knife also serving as a weapon. For me, that does not apply, as I have NO skill in that department, so I discount that from my deliberations about knives. If a favourite knife has that capability, that is a bonus not a requirement for me.] My current knife is a four-layer Victorinox model (I have forgotten its name.). However, if I'm talking outdoorsy then other factors apply. 6:40 Silky saw. I'm so glad to hear what you say about the Silky (looks like a Gomboy). For processing wood there is nothing that can outperform a saw with the same or better energy efficiency, for its weight. Axes are more fun granted, but they eat up energy and the end product is messy. 7:20 Kukri - I agree with you on a large knife for the heavy work. 30-odd years ago I saw a design called a Bushwhacker, and promptly made one for myself, and have used it extensively for a myriad tasks. But it was getting long in the tooth so I treated myself to something really special to replace it - a Cold Steel Trail Master (San Mai III version) and had a leather sheath made for me (by Rob Evans, Wales, UK). It is an absolute joy to use! [Sorry about your bad experience with CS! ] The fit & finish on my San Mai is unbeatable! 11:15 Fixed blade (camp or belt knife). This is a category where personal preference plays a huge role, often outweighing technical features. For years I was a big fan of the CS SRK, until I got the Trail Master. I needed something smaller and more compact and the choices were bewildering. Then along came Victorinox with their entry into the bushcrafting arena with their new Venture Pro system and I was in love! Here was a knife with so many of the features that didn't seem to be found in other offerings. Although it's unlikely to outperform any of the speciality knives in their specialist areas it does most of them very well for my needs. It is handled in "molded plastic" with a distinctive texture that makes it usable even under very slippery conditions and is almost indestructible. It's a through tang construction with one of the sharpest spines in the business, with the obvious advantages that brings. 18:20 Multi-tool. Here's an interesting one. It all depends on ONE factor - "Do you really NEED a full size pliers, or not?" If you really do, then some Leatherman does it for me and I have one, and use it often when appropriate. If not (as when out in the woods), then I'd rather go for a multitool knife (like a Victorinox Hercules, or Ranger Grip). The smaller pliers that some SAKs have is adequate for making snares and such like light tasks. 22:17 "Splitter tool" - That looks very useful, but bulky and looks quite heavy. For me (I'm no fan of batoning) I can use my Trail Master to do just about anything that tool can do. Its 5/16 thick blade splits very well especially as it has a convex grind. However, I'd only use that for thinner splitting and use self-made wooden wedges for heavier logs. [I have a rule of thumb - only split logs less than half the thickness of the length of the blade, and never larger than 4 inches diameter. The Trail Master has a 9 1/2 inch blade.] Thanks for the great video.

I agree that the replaceable wire cutter blades are nice but Leatherman also has a free lifetime warranty. Just submit a warranty form, ship them your tool and they'll repair or replace it for free no matter how worn out it is or stupid you were with it. I've had them fix a few and replace a few and their turnaround time is very quick.

I ditched all my folders for EDC since buying a Spyderco Street Bowie. Front horizontal belt carry, don't even know it's there, but can draw fast left or right handed. It rides tight next to my P365. I prefer Kydex and wear a heavy, thick belt. Also carry a Gerber Vise, which is smaller, but the pliers are delicate enough to pull splinters, can wrench on stuff and cut wire.

Great vid! Alan Rocks!! "You dont open your beer with your teeth?"🤣 I could be wrong but I imagine if Alan knew how much one of those Dumb rexford box cutters cost he would break out in laughing tears. Who the heck buys one of those expensive box cutters instead of a 5 to 10 dollar folding one at the hardware store!! Alan's knife choices are imo great examples and solid recommendations from someone worth trusting on the subject! He was Awesome on Alone! My fave currently owned and used knives are the cheap cold steel kukri, the Mora Bushcraft black, the Victorinox one hand trekker, and a cheap husky folding razor knife. My multi tool is a leatherman wave and I use a fiskars folding saw. It's fun to see how your choices compare to respected pros on the subject.

They're super handy if you work in a warehouse or something, but obscenely expensive. I got a clone on aliexpress for like $20 and gave it to my glazier mate, he loves it, but I cannot fathom paying for an original even though I feel bad for helping rip off the designer in turn.

I like what you said about the short comIngs of particular knives. I went through a year of discovery, learning about knlves - spent a lot of money on them too! Among others, I've got the Mora Garberg. It came with a kydex sheath, and I have no qualms about it whatsoever. When I first got it, I was looking it over lightly bumped the blade on my thumb! It cut me fast and clean. I put some iodine on it and taped it up. No joke! That's a serious blade!!! 🗡

Well damn. I was gonna suggest cold steels triad lock on their folders. I've never had any issues with any of my 5 or 6 cold steel folders at all. Ive only messed around with 1 of their fixed blade which is the SRK and I havent had any issues with it so far either so can't really speak for their fixed blades. Their folders though seem to hold up and seem to be super tough. Their triad lock is just superior.

I still like and use Cold Steel but I broke one of their kukri blades as well. I was riving a block of cedar and wasn't really hitting it that hard and it broke were the blade and tang met. I also broke a chunk of the blade of one. If I remember correctly it's called the Spartan. All I was doing with it was carving a cedar walking stick. Maybe they are allergic to cedar. 😆 I've got lots of their other stuff I've really abused without a problem and have total faith in those examples.

If they were legal here i`d go with a pushdagger (probably cold steel) as a defensive blade. Probably the best when you are already in a scuffle. I like to carry smaller fixed blades with velcro hidden in my clothes (cold steel spikes are good for that, quite inexpensive and you won`t notice them). CRKT sting is good too. For normal stuff a swiss army knife is all i need (huntsman or recrut[urban]). I prefer them even over my letherman wave (not only since they became illegal to carry here). They`re also much more pc than other options. Greedings from germany.

As always, good stuff. I typically carry a small fixed blade such as the ESEE Izula 2 and a Leatherman with a clip and one hand opening blade on the outside of the handle. The Leatherman is sized very close to many folders and offers a lot more utility. With a smaller fixed blade, it makes for a good combo. I also have a larger fixed blade knife in a pack in the car. Question: TOPS Kukri 7 vs the Dart? Maybe a worthy test on video?

Completely agree with Allen's philosophy regardinnng "self defense" knives. Just get a knife you will actually use. The chances of having to use it as a weapon is extremely slim so why not just get a knife that is actually useful for regular work, that you will be familiar with and will do 95% of what a tactical knife would do should you have to. The Clinch Pik looks cool but honestly, I might forget the damn blade is reverse shaprened under stress without having some training and lets be real, almost everyone buying that knife is not getting training.

The Mora kniv is not a Cadillac of a knife. It’s an outstanding proven, economical knife. A better sheath will drive up the price. A Mora is a Mora is a Mora 👍🏼👍🏼💪🏼

And Mora sheathes are great. What the hell do you expect on a $15 knife anyway?

I noticed that nothing was mentioned about the green package by Alan's right arm. I'm thinking that it might be a sharpening stone?

If your wood handled knives are cracking, you aren't maintaining them. Same as an axe handle, it'll last a lifetime if you look after it.

Agreed. When the wood starts drying out, it needs to be retreated and resealed with an oil base. Do NOT varnish!!!

Alan's right about Cold Steel. They lost a couple designers and got more interested in money. If you get a San Mai III type blade, they're tough and sharp and do the job but they've gone too "main stream" with all the survival mania and lost their edge (pun intended). The Bugout is light, which is nice and I don't miss the steel liners in that knife because 98% of what I need it for, including stabbing and cutting "soft targets," it just doesn't need them. I've got plenty of strong knives for any tougher jobs. I'm a big Tops/Esse fan, the Esse 6 would probably be my "pick one" knife for knife choice, that doesn't include Kukris, etc. And I'm not as adverse to automatics as Alan although I fully understand his reasoning. It depends on what my tasking is, I won't count on it for an end all, be all, last knife I would have to survive knife but a good quality auto is just great for most daily tasks I have and I'd absolutely use one for defense because I know that even if my hand is hurt or arthritis struck, it's going to open and get the job done. I've got several I'm very happy with but you do need to be sure of your laws, that gets people into more trouble than anything. The one knife you don't show or talk about and I get it, they're old school and there may be "bettrr" by far but... My Buck 110, 119 and 120 Pro lines (better steel, Finnish, guarantee, etc.) are still great carry knives. The 110 folder speaks for itself and I like the 119/120 and 110 fixed are awesome knives. They're light, sharpen well, have tough, anti-rust blades that are good for each, hunting and I've known a number I was in service with that carried a 120 over a Kabar, any day. The clip point is good for stabbing, the slight recurve does its job and the phenolic handles are really hard to hurt. They also have their cons, like most things but they're few and far between compared to pluses. The blade is a through handle tang, though it's a rat tail, that the pommel screws onto so, it's strong but not as tough as a full width tang. I stated that I like an Esse 6 but, after/beside that, I like the buck. Even though the 120 blade is 7" long, the knife is light enough that it's not unwieldy but, for regular use, like the Glock 19 over the 17, the 119 stands as the most popular fixed knife for usability and comfort/ease of carry. And for most hunting tasks, it's just fine (I lived up in north Montana and mule deer, Elk and moose were common game so the 120 was more appropriate. Buck also makes a great skinning and filet knife so, say all the nasty, troll stuff you guys want, Buck knives still have a place on the table, though it's not number one for understandable reasons.
