I’m excited … ish. Very rarely do these big companies do anything that is for the benefit of their consumers. Beam has generally done it more than other brands, though. My concern is that we’re going to end up with a lot of single barrels UNDER 120 proof. Also, that is a HUGE price increase. Screw that. I’d rather have it be 120 proof at $60 than 124 proof at $90.

Thank you for the update! I still have a little of the bottled in 2009 116-proof cask strength Rye and bottled in 2010 127-proof Rye (both were about 10 years 5-7 months old). I am waiting eagerly for a new cask strength and would absolutely love a 12-year 120 proof bourbon! I was used to paying around $76 in my area for the cask strength Rye bottles. $90 is reasonable (at least initially) in today's market, especially if it will be more readily available! P.S. The new 10-year Rye at 100 proof is nowhere near as delicious as the 2009 and 2010 cask strength releases.

I think you guys have it backwards. It doesn't cost them extra money or really much labor to proof all the bottles down to 120. Water is cheap, quick to add, and you get more bottles per barrel. Less bottles = less sales. It's actually more labor intensive in terms of time to print new labels and/or have people write each proof for every bottle vs a one-time addition of water before bottling.

If most/all the new KC Brl Prf will be under 130P, the price should be +$5 max, if any. The excise tax increase (based of alcohol content) will be just pennies more, so if they also do these NCF, they should be able to produce them at same or lower cost of the $60/120P. They better be 12yr min & NCF to get $80+, or I'm out.
@bourbonbill19 күн бұрын
I do want them going up in age for sure its yet to be known if that will be the case though
@MetaPrometheus19 күн бұрын
I guess I'm lukewarm on this change. I've noticed a subtle decrease in quality on the KC barrel picks available in my area, some of which have been sitting at the stores collecting dust for nearly two years now. I got a KC barrel pick here recently and two last year, and honestly I wished I had spent the extra $15-20 and just got bottles of KC 12 instead. And don't even get me started on the lack of value on Booker's! The distilleries have lost their competitiveness with the boom, when any bourbon tater bro will just throw money at the latest release bc some mouthpiece on social media told them to before they disappear off shelves! It's sort of like what's happened with insurance. When it's government mandated and the businesses just expect money coming in, it stifles innovation and causes continual price increases.

Knob Creek isn't my jam, butnim glad they are offering it. This sounds like more evidence of distilleries trying to unload stock before the bottom falls out. I think they see the sales declining and are trying to offload as much as they can now.

The bourbon boom has slowed down significantly. It seems a very dumb move to raise the price of your bourbon at this point in time. People are going to be less willing to pay the higher price in this economy. Knob Creek has been known to be an incredible value.They are going to need to put their game on the flavor front with the increased price. Not just higher proof.

KC also wastes time & $$ chill filtering these, probably so they can keep it at 0 grams of fat, which beams includes on a lot of their labels. The OGD 114 back label was changed in late 2024 to now include the same "nutrition" label as on KC bottles, so that is likely now being chill filtered. All my previous OGD 114 bottles were the least filtered whiskey I have ever had, judged by the cold test. Aka, put in fridge or freezer & see how much fat is in there when it turns solid & white-ish in color. This is what makes the creamy mouthfeel.
@bourbonbill19 күн бұрын
Agree chill filtering is a waste of time
@motohead07717 күн бұрын
@bourbonbill Yes. NCF used to never be done. It only started because ignorant 'whiskey on the rocks' & cocktail drinkers didn't understand why their whiskey got cloudy when cold & automatically thought that the whiskey was "bad". Though it was really a sign of quality, because that only comes from the oak it's stored in. So instead of distilleries trying to educate drunks, they decided to chill filter it, & charge more by marketing that their whiskey doesn't get cloudy on ice. Then at the same time, they market to whiskey enthusiast that it's NCF, as if they did something special to make it better, when it actually saves a bunch of time & money by eliminating an entire process.
