The ending of the film ruined the ENTIRE adaptation retroactively. The hell did Shyamalan have to remove the awesome ambiguity? That was what made the novel so great. I think that the four horsemen explanation was an avenue for deeper exploration. A rabbit trail if you will. We notice that there are 4 of them, but how many noticed their professions were diametrically opposed to the avatar they represented? Or that their shirt colors coincided with the color of the Horseman that they were supposed to represent? The nurse (life saver) in the pale cream-colored shirt represented death. The electrician (a supplier of a life bearing utility) who wore red represented War. The cook (one who feeds and sustains life) who wore black represented Pestilence/Famine. Finally, the teacher (an instructor and educator) wore white and represented Conquest. Sometimes the obvious was meant to draw you in for a deeper reflection. Love the channel and all your work!

Honestly laughed from that point on and thought it was a comedy movie. Didn’t care about any of the characters or anything. The only thing I can walking out that was interesting is that the people who had to decide were homosexual. In a male/female couple the parents could decide to save the world by killing the child because they can logically have more kids. Which means that one of the fathers is going to die. Spelling out that the four horseman were the literally the people was just dumbing the whole hour and forty minutes down to 30 seconds for me. That’s just my opinion though.

That negative is something I see happening a lot in films and television these days - details and puzzle pieces being explained in no uncertain terms to the audience. I've always felt it's more fun if we have to come to conclusions ourselves about what's happening in a story. And it's cool if the story stops short of simply explaining it, but as long as it's ultimately left for us to come to the conclusion ourselves. Anyways, if that's the biggest issue with this film going in, I'm already excited!

The show never says anything of this heck after the second episode of season 3 I don’t think the fertiliser is mentioned again it just lets it sit there for you to put together (btw I haven’t seen the last of us but I now hear that’s also how it all goes to poop because food chain) I’m actually a little embarrassed that it took me that long to spot the link but it’s almost a throwaway plot.

What I find a great mystery does is hide the details that give yhe movie away. Either bury the clues, keep them in the background out of focus, make it a piece of diolgue that seems vague but important enough that isn't obviously being covered, those kinds of things. Like I'd say The Chamber of Secrets book did it well and take notes from that. Also film makers trust your audience! If they don't get it, but it makes sense, they'll love it. If they catch it before on their first watch, that's cool too but would be cool if they felt like they earned it!

If you're wondering if the movie is any good or not, notice that all the raves aren't about the movie but about Bautista. There's your answer.

I heard that MNS had a new movie coming out but didn't give it a 2nd thought until I saw a trailer and realized it was based on one of my favorite horror book of all time, "Cabin at thte end of the world" by Paul Trembley. And it's not even his best book! Look out for the adaptation of his "A head full of ghosts" (along with Pet semetary, the best horror I've read) that is rumored to be on its way.

Wish you'd mentioned it's an adaptation, as that informs a lot, especially regarding the ending.

From memory, the lowest rating is dogshit. Next is forgotten in t minus 2 seconds. Next is a good time, no alcohol required. Then there’s worth buying on bluray/4K, then finally, the best rating is Awesometacular. So, using that system, this movie was rated a 3. I love jeremys reviews too, they’re a great length and he really clearly states why a movie is, or is not good, without spoiling anything.

In advance sorry for possible typos. English is not my native language and I have dylexia. He has a video on his channels front page explaining his raiting system. Dogshit is the worst raiting he can give a movie and awesometacular is the best raiting. Everything else falls in between and should not necessarily be boxed into places in a hierarchy. Movies that he rates good time if you are drunk can also be good or bad. Sometimes it means alcohol is needed to endure to get through the movie sometimes alcohol just enhances the experience. Jeremy thinks there are great masterfully done movies that just don't hit him on a personal level. He doesn't want to rate a movie better or worse based on his own personal preferences. However if you want to simplified version it generally works from worst to best like this: Bad movies Dogshit=not worth watching; usually top 10 worst movies of the year consist of movies that get this rating Not going to remember in T-minus=forgettable but not terrible Might be good/Might be bad Good time if you are drunk=whether you like it depends. Might be fun but don't watch if you think it will ruin your day. Good movies Good time no alchol required=Some peoples favourite movies can get this rating. It just means Jeremy himself is propably not going to buy it. If you are at all interested and have the time and money you should check it out. Buy on Blu Ray=a movie that Jeremy has or is going buy on blu ray. If your tastes are similar to Jeremys you might like it too. Great movies Awesometacular=Jeremy is a fanboy of this movie. Top 10 movies of the year list usually consists of movies that got this rating. Theses movies are not all Oscar winners or perfect but Jeremy definetly enjoys them. If Jeremy is a fan of a certain IP and the movie in his opinion does justice to the fanchise then he is very likely to give it this raiting.

Just watched this and fully agree. This film could have been a 9 out of 10 if they didn't explain everything at the end. Really would have been one of those "gotta watch it twice" mindf*cks if MKS carved some of the script out. Not sure how it aligns with the book. Despite that, it was still a solid 7 or 8 for me since it did so much with so few set pieces. Just well done. Another M Knight hit! Hope he's back on track, he really does make some great films.

Easily his worst film. So poorly written and acted. Acting besides Batista and the two fathers was awful. The 4 horseman ppl did the absolute worst job in trying to convince the couple it was real. Leaves the tv on for 10 seconds then shuts it off. Didn’t bother changing channels lol.. instead tried convincing them with the visions, like really. And that ending was so dull. “Kill me” ok boom. World is ok now yaaay. Like what. What’s interesting about that. Didn’t even get to see what all happened around the world they just drive off in a truck lol.

Personally this was the best movie I've seen this year behind Air. Really caught me off guard. It's a perfect example of Harmon's story circle & Campbell's hero's journey done to perfection which lot of modern movies completely miss. The movie engages the viewer with ultimatum/choice which is the main theme of the movie along with sacrifice. I do agree that it's not as 'vague' compared to his older films but we're living in a time where audience have shorter attention span than ever. And rather than using violence for violence sake, it's used to keep the pace & tension from falling too far after revealing the hand. Amazing acting from all the cast, especially Bautista & Kirsten who greets & hooks the viewer from the opening just with dialogue. I wish they make more movies like where storytelling is the focal point rather than cgi action.

I liked this movie because I read the book it was based on, and I loved how faithful M. Night was in adapting it, he did change the ending but I think that was to give it something more hopeful, whereas the book ending is very drab.

Spoiler warning just in case! I don't really know how well this movie would hold up on a rewatch. I kinda feel like it was really engaging up until the last 15 minutes when Eric had obviously already decided he was going to be the one to sacrifice himself. I kept expecting more after that happened, but it just kinda kept going. The diner scene really did a lot to deflate the movie in my personal opinion. This could just be an issue unique to me, but I feel like M. Night has made himself so known for twist endings that it kinda felt weird that there wasn't one. I think it might've been way more effective to end the movie on a more ambiguous note. Maybe Wen and Andrew drive away while planes are still falling in the distance and lightning is striking. Did they fail to prevent the apocalypse or are those just residuals from it slowly crawling to a stop after the sacrifice? I will compliment Shyamalan on his camerawork though. The tension was palpable, especially in the first scene. Those uncomfortable angles and close-ups show just how talented he is as a filmmaker. On a scale from Last Airbender to Unbreakable, I'd say it sits a little above average. Not amazing, but it had some awesome moments. EDIT: I also applaud the marketing for this movie. They were adamant at showing very little. Most of it is only from the first 15 minutes or so. I was shocked when Rupert Grint died so early. More movies should follow this approach, it left me more engaged not thinking of missing trailer scenes in the back of my mind.
@Trav2733 Жыл бұрын
Completely agree about the ending. So dull and just nothing interesting about it. Kills partner. World is “apparently” ok now thanks to a stupid diner scene with a tv. Drive off in truck.. so dull.
