I mean, a modern day Great White or Mako isn't the same as a shark from say 100 million years ago. A lot of current species of sharks weren't even around back then. Evolution doesn't stop, so-called prehistoric plants and animals do keep evolving along with their changing ecosystems, or adapt to new ones. That's how they've survived for so long in the first place. It's just that pretty early on nature hit on a few robust frameworks to build from.

It feels like one of those movies triggered by a wiki search. There have been instances of sharks self-impregnating through a process called Parthenogenesis. And there actually is a species of lizard somewhere in the South West deserts that are all effectively clones of the same mutant mama that passed on this trait to all her female babies. So it's one of those things where it's TECHNICALLY correct (the best kind of correct) that it could happen, but ramped up to an absurd degree. And I'm no biologist myself, and these two things might be just pop-science news articles that overplayed the facts. But that's exactly the kind of science that's going to make it into a B-movie script. That said, I would be fascinated with seeing a sequel where these sharks have just claimed the oceans like friggin Poseidon, and humanity is trying to re-engineer their entire infrastructure to remove any vehicles from the water because these sharks are just DIALED IN on that sweet sweet human meat.

Facultative parthenogenesis, asexual reproduction when there's no males around, is fairly rare in nature but in the case of sharks, those all happened in captivity. Evolving to be smaller is still evolution. Also, the idea that sharks stopped evolving is a fun but incorrect pop-scientific fact. Sharks HAVE kept evolving-species are constantly arising, specializing, and changing or going extinct. Evolution is a constant process, it doesn’t just go “ah, we made a perfect thing, we’re done” and stop happening-it might not be super noticeable, but biologically, evolution is unceasing. Everything evolves all the time, even sharks, alligators, and coelacanths lol

A lot of this seems to have similar vibes to "The Last Shark"; a 1981 Italian film that has similarly cartoonish and outlandish shark attack scenes. At least that one leans a little more heavily into being tongue-in-cheek silliness rather than trying to get across a legit environmental message, iirc.

I went shark diving when I went to Australia - inside a cage, 4 hour boatride away from the mainland in a no fishing protected area. Someone saw a whale, we saw a lot of seals, two porpoises, never seen such a vibrant ocean in my life (the no fishing protection really makes sense). Of course, two great white sharks - the biggest one over 15 feet long. Not interested in people inside cage, just the bait and sometimes the boat. AND YES, they do leap out of the water when they bite onto food!!! But 48 hours after my dive, a schoolteacher was killed by a shark a few towns away. Maybe sharks are like dogs - some are chill, some are crazy. Or maybe humans aren't marine animals and we're not supposed to be in the ocean. I still love sharks, don't get me wrong. But they are really really dangerous.

They're wild animals. They're mot 'really really dangerous', they're not 'crazy' they're wild fucking animals acting like wild animals. On the whole, sharks have very little interest in people. We KNOW this, there is no need to make irresponsible guesses on the internet to the detriment of animals you claim to care about. Shark attacks are RARE for how often we invade their habitats. They'd rather leave people alone. The majority of shark attacks are accidental on the part of the shark-it bites a human thinking it's something else, goes 'gross, I don't want to eat that' and fucks off. All wild animals are dangerous. Sharks are not special in the fact that they occasionally maul a human. In fact, they're special in that most of the time, they're pretty docile. Even when they do bite, you're pretty likely to survive. They're just wild animals like any other and if you REALLY cared about them as a species you would already know this. And you wouldn't be spreading irresponsible misinformation based entirely on shark horror movies. Be a better person

I feel like its like the prequel to a zombie movie. Where its like how the zombies took over. But with sharks.

When lead girl is dragged under water in the opening, she wouldn't be at risk of 'the bends'. She isn't on compressed air and still just has her gases from the surface level by the time she surfaces again. But otherwise agreed her having such a lung capacity when the shark pulls her down at the beginning is pretty absurd.

Interesting thing, its extremely rare to get the bends from freediving because you are working off a single breath of air and there isnt usually enough infusing in to you to cause problems. If it does happen it tends to be to people doing repeated free dives sometimes for hours. (Although Ive seen the bleeding ear thing multiple times in movies, with no apparent effect on the character, and its down right surreal. Just dont show their ears bleeding if you arnt going to have it have any impact whatsoever.)

Love your reviews! As an answer to how she was ok after being dragged down, you can’t get the bends unless you’re on compressed air :) so if you just go down and come back up, you’re fine as long as you do it fast enough and can survive the pressure change- which should be ok for most healthy 20-30 somethings down to about 70 meters or even a bit more.
