The ticking noise in the Malibu was the time bomb that GM (Grenade Makers) installs in every one of their vehicles. It is activated by mileage. When the ticking starts it means the vehicle is nearing the end of its life span. By defusing the device, Ray has now angered the Car Gods. They will curse him for the rest of the day.

I have replaced that part 527 times in my Chevy Impala. The vent actuators.. all of them. The last ones I replaced I coated it with JB weld to stiffen the case. That has worked for over 2 years now. The plastic case flexes and allows the teeth to jump. I have replaced all 3 of mine several times. PRO TIP: Paint the outside of the black box with JB weld to stiffen the case!

There are actually 2 more actuators besides the two you pointed out on the first car. The driver temp control is above the gas pedal. A joy for most people to get to. On the first car, the mode actuator is lower left of the second actuator you decided to replace. Some cars have 3(single climate control) and some have 4(dual climate control) based on my knowledge of a 2008 Impala. The Pass temp, Driver temp and Blend door are identical actuators. The mode actuator is a different part number. On the second car, that looks like the mode actuator that you wanted to replace. I used my dads Blue point TM-64 carb adjustment tool to replace the drivers' side with ease. Why not? I haven't seen a carburetor forever. I lay across the drivers' seat and reached thru the glove box into the fender area to change the blend door actuator in the upper right of dash. Easy peasy. I replaced all 3 with AC Delco motors from amazon. There is a 50/50 chance to just slap one in and it will last. They must be calibrated or the new gears will possibly strip too. One way is with a tech2 scanner. The DIY way is to disconnect the battery for 5 minutes. Reconnect battery and start engine. Wait at least 2 minutes before touching controls. It takes 2 minutes for the calibration process. If they are not calibrated after installation, the motor does not know where to stop and will apply constant torque on the gears until they break. I apologize for the long post. But, you finally made a video on something I can explain with some confidence. I don't think I got the names of what each actuator controls but I know there are 4 for sure in the 2008 Impala I was working on.

Had the same issues repeatedly in my 2008 Impala. I finally watched the box close while holding it. The black case is snapped together and would flex enough to allow the gearing to jump. I "painted" the new entire box with a layer of JB weld to provide it with extra stiffness. This has worked for over two years now. Still no clicking 👍.

I had three actuators to change on my 2011 Chevy Traverse. Those things were very hard to reach. I was only able to actually replace two of them since the third (temperature - passenger side) was in a place that even if you removed the entire dash, reaching the fasteners still required navigation around a piece of metal that didn't look like it would move. I wound up using the wiring schematics to determine which wires at the center console powered that unit and with the help of a 9V battery was able to move the actuator to the desired position. All in all, a real PITA job for me.

Here in the salty wasteland of northern PA, it is wise to pull the boots off the caliper pins, clean the crust out of them, and wire-wheel the groove in the top of the pin. Add a little shmoo in the groove and inside the boot, and reassemble. Otherwise rust jacking at that lip will eventually let salty water get inside the boot; the technical term for this condition is "a bad thing".

The problem with the Impala ones didn't start until complaints of the heat being to cold. The culprit was supposedly the blend door not shutting all the way. The fix: reflash the climate control to change the resistance required to shut the motor off. The problem was they chose a value much to high and out of range for the crappy gearbox. By the time the motor hit enough resistance to meet the new level required the box would be flexing. Over a few months the flexibility increases and soon the gears would start to jump causing the click click click click noise. The best part is that the vents would move on even when the car was parked so in the middle of the night it would be clicking away for a few minutes every few minutes. Coat the gear box with JB weld to increase the stiffness and the problem goes away for a long while. The above is just a theory because my climate control system was reflashed at the dealership because of the not hot enough complaining which I never experienced, they just did it as a preventative measure. The boxes started clicking soon afterwards.

How can you be accused of "stealing from the company" when you're just helping out with additional diagnostics? You're not doing free or behind the counter repairs, but just pointing out additional problems that may lead to more work orders (as they just did in this case). A smart boss will encourage such behavior, not only you're generating more income from the additional repairs, but also increasing customer satisfaction and confidence in the shop, which is far more important than counting dimes on any particular job.

Found another place who actually specialise in DFP cleaning and repairs, they got me in a week sooner than Ford, and even without seeing the car, it is likely to already be loads cheaper than the first option. They want to charge $110 per hour for the diagnosis, minimum 3 hours, and if it’s more than 3 hours, they absorb the extra time and don’t charge. Going to the dealer isn’t always best, and more expensive isn’t always best either when there are other options available

Back in 2012 we bought a 2008 Impala with 67,000 miles knowing the blend door actuator was faulty, talked the seller down $500, had it replaced along with the full brake service for less than the $500 saved. Sold the car in 2018 to a neighbor with 140,000 miles he drove it highway miles another 3 years until it was totaled in a severe head on highway crash with 200,000+ miles and they never mentioned the actuator again..solid cars.

Hey Ray did Ridgid recondition your Midtorque Impact or did they give you a new one? BTW you can still pick up 3.0 Ah Octane's with 2700's cells that give it way more power than the newer batteries being sold with it. The wobbly bit would have worked on the bracket with a stronger battery 🤣 Switching to the Octane battery made a night and day difference in power with mine. Thanks 👍

In 93 I owned a 1973 cadi coupe deville. The driver side rear wheel seal broke and I pulled the axel took it to a shop and had the new bearing pressed on. This cost me $45 and I only had $50. So when I put everything back together I tried cleaning the brake pads and reusing them. Bad idea, especially with a vehicle that weighed 2-1/4 tons.

At my shop, they trust those of us that actually know better (really it's a tire center, so we definitely have kids around who don't know) to do additional diagnostics like brakes, suspension, etc. if it's quick and safety-related. Pulling a caliper only takes a few moments and could potentially save a life. If anyone's REEEEEing about it they'd be the type to charge a customer 5 minutes of labour to pull a caliper instead of just doing it for free like you should.

Smart actuators, relays, central locking switches etc etc all have contact switches in. There are so many engineers that just don't realise that switch contacts need to 'wipe' open or closed. If they just open or 'touch' closed dirt or oxides build up leading to intermittant operation. Wiping contacts self clean every time...

The only thing that ever makes me REEEE on this one is the fact Ray doesn't open the bleeder screw when compressing calipers (IE: not doing it 'by the book'). Granted, it only happens once in a blue moon, but forcing too much of old fluid back through the hydraulic system can lead to problems down the road. Plus, that's just how I was taught to do it back in tech school. Even if you don't have to bleed the brakes, it's still a good idea to flush the lines on a somewhat regular basis because like all things petroleum based, it too breaks down over time and needs to be changed.

Those procedures needed to be done in a maintenance time, and only when the customer is aware of that cost, I know 0.8 liters is very small amount, but the customer will tell at you for doing with out telling him. There is little problems with compressing the calipers if you do it right, by the manual and manufacture some may differ the way you compressing the calipers but most of them are straight forward

Having broken more than my share of bleeder screws, much more often than a blue moon, I see the contrary, practical rust belt argument. Don't think you won't occasionally turn minor maintenance into an expensive project that disables the vehicle while waiting for parts, with an angry customer who tells all his friends. On the other hand, I've never destroyed an MC. Retrograde flow of brake fluid happens every time you let your foot off the brake (admittedly with smaller volume).
@whuzzzup
@whuzzzup 2 жыл бұрын
I don't understand this point. What is the issue with pushing back fluid? It happens constantly when the car is uses and everything in the fluid disperses anyway.
@spelunkerd
@spelunkerd 2 жыл бұрын
@@whuzzzup The argument is that big volumes of retrograde flow can put stress on the seals inside the MC, maybe even cause a seal to flip over and invert, which might cause it to leak at some later point. Another reason is to avoid pushing contaminated fluid inside the slave cylinder backward into the master or ABS unit. And a third reason is to regularly use that bleeder so that it doesn't seize forever. This sounds great in new cars with no rust, but shops in the rust belt don't often crack bleeders unless they are replacing fluid or changing a caliper.
@GhostRider-pl8ul

I was taught that any time you spread the calipers that you open the bleeder valve, unless changing out all the brake fluid.
