Another good mechanic-ing video Ray. Now you have Troy helping you, your shop can focus on the interesting things others are probably not prepared to put the necessary time to. It should be future-proof as battery cars sneakily try to displace the ones with real engines from the roads. and people like you know bow to keep them going and going.

Very much enjoy your videos. Amazing camerawork, Well lit, Fantastic Banter. Love it! When a bolt or pin won't go in after a few minutes (i.e. at 24 to 28 min), using a phone camera or boroscope to look into hole / nut to see bolt/pin alignment as you wiggle it is often well and truly worth the effort. The 'don't fully tighten any bolts until all bolts are started' principle (28 min) is a lesson I have to relearn every few years.

I once changed the power steering rack on my father in laws Buick Century. I did it on the ground with hydraulic jack assist. Took me 5.5 hrs. to do it, a professional mechanic can do it in less than a hour or he's losing money. Of course they have a lift, but still this is a Mother of a job. Raymond makes it look easy.

You are good man Ray. I am surprised the RAV4 needed a rack so early. The steering on my 25yr old no rust Sienna 168k had a slight click 7yrs ago when I took possession 119k I have held it in check. 1st never change all the fluid in an old R&P The click will be worse and accelerate wear. I removed the power steering fluid from the reservoir, and refilled the tank with Lucas! I added 1/2 bottle of AT205 seal polymer to prevent future seal leaks. It's time to install new PS hoses, before rubber deterioration inside the hoses wrecks my rack.

the mounts’ center bolt has to go in first any little twist will keep it from threading through to the fixed nut. great job with the task and video. rubber boots are always such a difficult to get things lined up. it is always easier to take apart then put back together you did a great job setting the tie rod ends length . can not wait for you to have a wheel alignment equipment in house! remember you have a great day!
@jamram9924
@jamram9924 Жыл бұрын
Ray has done this several times before when he worked at the other shop......🤦🏻‍♂ If he left the mount loose after beginning the vertical bolts, then inserting the center bolt would've been so much easier. He's not focused on finishing that he looses sight. It happens to so many technicians.

Must be a common issue. Our 2008 Rav4 has had a steering knock since 150K miles. I replaced the tie rod ends and checked for play in the steering linkage to the rack, it must be the rack, good to see this is pretty easy to do on this vehicle. Thanks for the video!

Good camera detail about what to do, but, I see more mechanics that don't believe in proper torquing per manufacturer's instructions. Not only that, the sub-frame & cross member assembly is has several bolts to be torqued with the weight of the vehicle on it, per Toyota service manual otherwise premature wear will occur to suspension parts. Can do it with vehicle lowered onto front wheel ramps and just use a creeper for final torquing.
