Might need to grind down the "shark fins" ahead of the cutter teeth that control the depth... the chain was doing more sliding on the wood than cutting... if the chain has been sharpened a few times the cutting edge gets lower and lower and the fin holds the cutting edge up away from the wood... Later! OL J R :)

There is another great herbicide called Pathfinder. We use it at work for whats called a Basal Stem treatment. It doesn't require us to cut the tree down. Its also a RTU formulation. Pathfinder is an oil so it sticks to the bark and you can use it pretty much year around if I recall. Our State DOT has us use it frequently along the Interstates to stop small trees from getting bigger

Used tordon for years and it works great. Most of the time I take a drill and a 1/2 inch bit with me and drill about an inch or so into the stump and it contains the tordon better and seems to use less of it as well. Nice video.

Tordon! I used it 45 years ago when I worked for the power company. We would just spray the trunk from chest high to the ground. No more tree. We had concentrate which we would mix with fuel oil. We didn’t take the tree down as we were in the country. One day the sprayer malfunctioned and sprayed straight up into the air. We took out an entire corn field.

simplest and most effective techniques for removing select trees and large shrubs without cutting them down is called the “hack-and-squirt” method. I've have done it for many years,even on very large trees that were close to builds or power lines. The tre dies from the top down . Lots easier than cutting a tree down..

Happy Easter Kuester family. I always wondered what to use to get rid of the box elders on my aunt and uncle s farm. My ultimate goal is to get it back looking the way it did when the cows were still around and I'm sick of cutting the trees that seem to grow like weeds each year
@lukestrawwalker6 жыл бұрын
Easiest is Remedy/diesel basal bark treatment... mix 3-4 parts diesel fuel with 1 part Remedy, then spray the bottom foot to foot-n-a-half of the tree ALL THE WAY ROUND it from the ground up 1-1.5 feet up the trunk, then leave them be. It'll kill the tree down through the roots and all and you can come back later with a tractor and front end loader or skid steer and just knock them right over roots and all and push them up into burn piles... that's how we cleared the trees and cross-fences out on our place at Shiner. We let the trees dry down for a year after we spray them and they're easy to push out once they're dry like that. Now we just make a maintenance treatment once a year on the golf cart with the 14 gallon electric sprayer-- usually don't use over a gallon of Remedy all total to treat 160 acres... you don't use much at all when you catch them small as switches/saplings coming up out in the pasture or old fence lines. I've killed trees up to 3 foot around or so and overgrown brush hedges with this same treatment. It'll kill prickly pear too but it's kind of expensive, so we use other stuff for that (Pastora I think? My brother bought it) and it literally NUKED the prickly pear in a single year! Bad thing about Tordon is if you apply it to the soil it breaks down SO slowly it'll be there for YEARS and can damage crops years from now if you start farming ground where it was applied... Remedy isn't like that... Later! OL J R :)

Clearing fence lines with a saw is dirty work. If you spray with Triclopyr 4 EC (same as Garlon 4 or Remedy but far cheaper) mixed with a bark penetrant like methylated seed oil, and you can just spray whatever is there and it will kill all of the woody stuff without killing the grass -- and it kills the nasty broad-leaf weeds as well. You just walk the fence line and spray every year. You just need to do it every year to catch the seedlings. BTW -- I'm located just north of Prairie. Howdy neighbor!

IMO that type of clearing goes faster with a forestry clearing saw. STIHL FS560 or Husky 555FX. As far as the chain, if you’re running a green tab Stihl chain the cutter has been sharpened back far enough that you’re riding on the safety links. The yellow chains are easier to keep running longer and with less messing around. They’re just not as “safe”.

Probably goes without saying, but be careful when trimming near a fence. I was trimming next to a chain link fence, tip of the bar nicked the fence, and the saw kicked back and bumped me in the forehead! Not very deep, but they used eleven stitches to close it up because it was kind of a tear wound. Made me feel silly that it happened-been using a chainsaw on and off for about 40 years and did a rookie mistake.......

I don't know this but wouldn't common sense be- cutting those trees in late summer-early fall be better because the herbicide will be pulled into the roots then. In spring doesn't most off the sap runs from the roots to the trunk? Or it really doesn't matter? I got no clue but I would like to know. thanks
@leebarnes6556 жыл бұрын
You've got it right except it's not so much sap stored in the roots over winter as it is the chlorophyll and that's why trees turn color in the fall. The green chlorophyll is stored first leaving behind the yellow and red versions. Doesn't matter here because the tordon RTU will do the job on them..

Why did you cut the trees so high?
@MrThisIsMeToo6 жыл бұрын
Couple of reasons in my eyes. One to keep the chain out of the dirty wood and dulling. The other, so that you can see the stump if driving by.
@michaelmurphy35676 жыл бұрын
MrThisIsMeToo ok but it's along a fence that looks like it won't be taken out. Plus if they cut them say 6 inches off the ground then the tordon can get to the roots faster a decay the stump. I get keeping the blade out of the dirt but seems like a waste of tordon
@MrThisIsMeToo6 жыл бұрын
I understand but you could spray Tordon on the leaves of a tree 6 feet up and it will be dead in 48 hours. The distance is irrelevant with Tordon. We use to just open up the bark of a tree with a chainsaw and lightly coat the cuts with Tordon on right of ways. A few drops will kill a 6 inch tree standing easily. It is nice to leave like that as they dry out faster, come back and cut and burn.
