2,4-d is a synthetic auxin, as is triclopyr, quinclorac, dicamba, etc. Auxin is one of the hormones in the plant that regulate growth. It plays a large role in the ability for plant leaves to track the sun. By giving the plant an overdose of auxin is disrupts this process. Any high nitrogen source will accelerate that process. This is why it works especially well with group 4 herbicides. While the ph plays a small role here, there are more factors at play. It's a really good tip though and one usually only the pros utilize. 👍

Okay so what you didn’t mention is that when you use nitrogen with herbicides or even fertilizers is that when you’re applying them through foliar application the plant translocates the herbicide/fertilizer freely through the phloem of the plant as nitrogen does. So the plant does the work to move the herbicide freely up and down the plant. Always add a nitrogen source to any sprays. Urea and amino acids work great as well but if you need to pH down your herbicide then ammonium nitrate/sulfate will do it well! Using a wetting agent works to make your foliar applications stick so you end up using less herbicide which is more money in your pocket. Excellent video

Love your videos. Super informative and detailed...plus I love how you show results too. I have a quick question I was hoping you could give me your opinion on. I live up in Niagara Falls Canada (Zone 6) and I am a pretty avid gardener. I try to practice organic farming methods as much as possible. One of these methods is to make my own compost. To do so, I need a high nitrogen organic source to mix with my organic carbon source. The source I use is grass clippings. Along with being an avid gardener, I really take pride in making sure my lawn looks awesome! Well, because I use my lawn clips to make my compost, I don't spray my lawn anymore with herbicides. Do you know how long herbicides stay (in traces) into the plants that they are designed to kill or the surrounding grass that it does not target? Do you know if in fact the herbicides leech into the soil and stay present for years (this is what I have read) and finally, if the herbicide does stay in the soil, do the plants planted into the soil take up that herbicide? I'm trying to be as heath conscious for me and my family as possible...but sometimes I wonder if it is all BS. I mean, you can get your hands on compost from your local regional municipality every year for free and they cannot guarantee the grass that was brought it did not have herbicides sprayed onto them. Your opinion or advice would be amazing. Thanks again and keep up the great work.
@PrincessCutLawnCare Жыл бұрын
that you so much! it really all depends what herbicides you use, some stay in the soil for longer than others when it comes to general broadleaf weeds control you will want to stay away from 24D as it can be mobile in the soil for up to 2 weeks although i suspect a bit longer If you're looking for a general broadleaf control that has (relatively) low toxicity than your best bet would be triclopyr and mesotrione, they are excellent at controlling weeds and are not as soil mobile as 24D, you can even use them when seeding new grass
@luca4741 Жыл бұрын
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Thank you for the information!!! That is great to know which herbicides stick around longer than others and which ones a more toxic. My main goal or want would be to use something I can apply in the middle of the summer (like now) for the next month, and have it do its thing but be gone from my grass and soil by the following spring. This way I can begin to use my grass again for my compost needs at the end of the winter and spring and do the herbicide thing again in early to middle of July net year. Can you confirm that is the case with both of these you recommended?

Have you ever dealt with 'whitetop' - a.k.a. Hoary Cress? It spreads with rhizomes and has an extensive root system. My experience has been that some of it will die in the first spraying but the areas that have gotten really established for years and build up strength will die when sprayed in the spring and will go away all summer but will come back in the fall, so you kill it again and then it will come back in the spring. Eventually after enough years of spraying it will die but it doesn't seem like the chemical is getting all the way down to the deepest roots in the well-established part of the weed patch.

Does ammonium sulfate have the same effect if added to a total vegetation killer?

Yes, works especially well with glyphosate (total vegetation killer)

What would be the result if you just used more herbicide, equal to the added amount of other chemical ?

I live in one of the "special" states where we can't get any weed killers that work at all. Would adding this to the weak products I am forced to buy make a difference? I actually checked amazon and almost did a cartwheel because I finally found something that could ship. The logic of nitrogen enrichment makes a lot of sense. Farmers had to burn fields to re nitro the soil.
@PrincessCutLawnCare8 ай бұрын
Yes this would be a perfect solution to boost your selection, we have had many people from CA comment on how it has helped them

@@PrincessCutLawnCare Thanks. I might resort to this if my 75% vinegar experiment doesn't work.

@@Kudeghraw be sure not to use the vinegar solution in your lawn as it will damage your grass as well
@Kudeghraw8 ай бұрын
@@PrincessCutLawnCare Its going to be a full kill. Going to try it out on a non-critical alley spot where I don't want anything to grow at all and see what happens and see if I need to add salt for the tough stuff. No salt on the main lawn though. If it works, will use the salt vinegar for concrete cracks.

hey mike! it would work to reduce the ph of the solution but thats only one piece of the puzzle. would be better to use AMS so you can get all the benefits

How is this different than weed & feed? Wouldn’t this mixture have the same effect as weed and feed?
@rickmuir7616 Жыл бұрын
Tried to get a solution of ammonium sulphate by adding 15 Tbls to approximately 1 lt of 160 degree R/O water. What I thought was a totally desolved cloudy liquid was not. When I add 80 ml of Killex concentrate, I got a chaulk like mixture which only served to plug my 7.5 liter sprayer. Where did I go wrong?
@PrincessCutLawnCare Жыл бұрын
Sounds like you added too much, you should only add 60 grams per 1 gallon
@rickmuir7616 Жыл бұрын
@@PrincessCutLawnCare So if a table spoon weighs approx 25 grams that would equal about 4 to 5 Tbls for a 2 gal sprayer. So 15 was 3 to4 times too much. Why do you 2 to 4 oz per gallon? I live in Ontario & trying to control creeping Charlie.
