Every review I've seen of these was highly positive, and some say they're better than the stock Harley carb. I just ordered one off of eBay for my '97 WideGlide for 47 bucks with tax. I have one of those on a new to me Dyna and it works great so far. One note though, those bowl screws are very likely NOT Phillips but JIS (Japanese Industrial Standard) and won't strip if you use the correct JIS driver....that would be the case on the stock Kehin carb for sure. I didn't know the difference myself for years and stripped plenty of JIS screws. In a pinch you can grind the tip of a Phillips driver shorter and it will fit JIS screws better and be far less likely to strip them.
@dad22153 Жыл бұрын
Good instructional video. One suggestion....you might want to also mention about checking the float level. While you have the bowl off changing the jets, it's always a good idea to check the float to make sure it's within spec. Again, just a suggestion.

Not a choke, actually a carb enrichment circuit, hence no butterfly to choke off air. When it pulls that needle out of carb body it allows more fuel to go through that passage for easier starting

Well technically @rc5693 is correct. Being a vintage auto mechanic, Ive always seen that a choke has a butterfly. When I started fiddling with this Harley carb, it has no butterfly and I then concluded it must be an enricher. An accelerator pump is an enricher, would you call that a choke? There is a difference like it or not. What ever its called, it sure helps to start the bike when its cold, thank god for that, especially with a kick start. I didn't wanna spend the money on another H-D carb thats "worth" more than the bike. Picked up one of these with a choke cable and deleted the auto choke system and outta the box it was almost prefect. I think I'm gonna go up to the 180 or 185 on the final jet, it kinda coughs and cuts out at full throttle. But thanks to your video I saved a ton of money. I love my Buells, but always hated the H-D service bill. Once I started learning how to work on them myself, there was no going back to the dealerships, which worked out cause H-D axed the brand. Most of the Buells run these CV40 carbs with an "auto choke."

"Harley" Keihin CV carbs were not made in the USA in the first place. I disregard EVERY opinion by non-mechanics and avoid them because I dislike non-technical humans. Carbs were perfected over 100 years ago and the earliest still used today is the SU (Skinners Union) CV which is a piston type and still in production. HD plugs are branded Champions. I've ridden and wrenched HDs since before the posers took over the market and while selling Bubba with more money than sense paid off for HD I have nothing to do with those people. Real bikers wrench. Real car people wrench. Real gearheads wrench. Carbs BTW are so simple they're basically a toilet float with some plumbing. My long-deceased grandmother and mother drove a T Model Ford on their rural mail route in the 1930s and managed just fine with manual throttle and ignition levers. Anyone who CHOOSES to learn can do so. I've never been stranded by a carb. Not so with EFI pumps...

@@STLNik well it's not the effort really. If they work well and are easy to tune then it beats a lot of options money wise by a HUGE margin. I'm a fabricator so the intake isn't that big of a deal. And I'm thinking maybe it's a good option for triples on an inline six that has a pair of awful zenith 2 barrels.

What would you do different to the carb for the big twin engines?

Just look up the proper jet sizes for your displacement. I usually find the factory size and go up 1

Are the parts on these interchangeable with the original Keihn carb? I was thinking of putting the bowl with the drain on my stock carb to make it easier to winterize the bike.
