just rebuilt my first carb, 1997 Harley Heritage Softail. Bike had not run in 4 years. Watched all your videos before beginning. Installed rebuild kit. Reinstalled carb, filled up gas tank...bike started right up, ran smooth for 30 seconds, then died. When back and watched "Float Adjustment" video again. Realized I did not lube the float needle area. Basically the float had stuck and raw fuel came out the overflow tube. Removed carb and lubed float needle. Reinstalled. Bike started right up and runs perfect. No lean condition, no nothing. Just power. Can't thank you enough! John in Houston.

What an excellent video Shane Conley! Quick question, does that 17 degree angle apply for all carbs or just Harley ones? I am cleaning a mikuini, and want to check the level, although I do not think the float is an issue, I have always had problems with the bike not idiling at all. I assume this would be the pilot jet would it? thanks for any info!
@jeffsfolio7 жыл бұрын
Rhys Harris, not sure about the angle of other CV carbs, but I would like to know this as well. Thanks Shane
@jeffsfolio7 жыл бұрын
About your idle issue... usually you can still idle the bike by adjusting the fuel mixture screw. Turning it out will add more fuel to the idle and turning it in will reduce the amount of fuel in your idle mixture. Also, make sure your throttle stop adjustment is high enough to keep the butterfly open just a tad... until you see one of the 4 holes that reside on the engine side, lower part of the venturi. The butter fly should probably reveal at least one of those holes. If, at this point your bike is not idling then you could adjust the float bowel to make sure there is enough fuel getting to the pilot jet. If all this is good then you may have a vacuum issue. On my bike, the gas cap one way valve stopped working and created a vacuum that kept the fuel from running to the carby. Just riding with the gas cap off or open resolved this issue. If there are any vacuum issues then there will either be no fuel making it to the carby or there will not be enough vacuum to suck the fuel through the pilot housing and into the venturi. I hope this helps.

thanks Shane!! that is very nice of you. the carb i was having issues with is on a snowmobile and turned out to be a incorrect part installation. my floats were 2 separate floats with pins off the bottom of the float. the needle arm installed upside down allowed one float to rise above the arm holding the needle open causing a flooding problem. watching your video helped me to look at this style of carb differently and allowed me to see the problem itself. might have missed the upside down arm if i had not gained better understanding from your video.

I had a friend of mine who is a machinist, machine one side of a block of 2” aluminum at a 20 degree angle. Then I just set the carb on the 20 degree angle side of the block and adjust the float. Works fast and is correct every time. I’ve been using this trick for years.

This is a great carb lesson! Nicely gone through and even though my project isn’t Harley it definitely gives me a better understanding of how they work and how to adjust them! Chasing an overflow issue now, going to be checking that 21 year old float out as well as its height!

Thank you for these instructibles. I could not stop watching them (although I have a few difficulties to find the right sequence of the carb series) I guess you know your ropes wrt specific bike issues, but what I like most is your emphasis on general workmanship. Also your "don'ts" I find most useful.

Was able to easily fix a misadjusted float with this guide, fuel was flowing out of the overflow. 4:52 was the key.(Didnt need a 20º tool, just eyeballed it to behave the way he was showing & sit level at that slight angle.) Bike running great. Thanks for the guide!

Thanks for making the video! I've been trying to diagnose the problem of my bike not wanting to keep running. I do believe it was the float valve being too tall. Like actually being too tall. Hello. I have a ninja 250r. Finally got the carbs right. I took it for a test ride n it shut down. It feels like the brakes are too tight. I already know the chain is too tight. Pushing this bike should not be as hard as it is considering the weight. I noticed oil dripping from bottom..I looked at the oil after I drained it..it had gas in it. I now have the back wheel off the ground..put oil in..start it n go thru the gears is no problem. I dont understand..m wondering to take it out again n try. I'll let u know how it goes.

SHANE you are the best teacher instructor on carbs, IMHO. Shane- the pin fit and interface with recipient holes, BOTH the holes of the cast aluminum carb AND the holes of the plastic float valve have become very sloppy. I want to know if this is going to result in a lean or rich condition??? You are the best. Should I install a tighter fitting pin? As i wiggle the float around left to right up and down and every other way, the loose slop is substantial and has GOT TO BE affecting performance!

I’m just wondering if on average all carburetters should be set between that 15 to 20° preferably 17 to 18°. I am talking about a 1983 mercury outboard 50 hp I would think that it would be safe to think that most larger carburetters would be sat at that same level as you described in your video. I have been looking over several videos on how to set a carburetter and this by far was the easiest to understand. Everything was so clear to see you did not have your hands in the way you are not using fancy filters to try to make your video look better and just straight to the point very easy to understand obviously your students love you that’s awesome thank you so much for what you do

I'm the intern studying under Shane. I'm going to watch this video right now and learn what he said as to why! One of these days I hope to move from the office to the shop! He has a few other tricks up his sleeve he plans on making videos on. If you need help sooner choose and option below! That’s a great question for Shane directly! We are just the social media team. Shane does answer questions when he get's back around to non members eventually so hang tight, FYI >>>> he does member ones daily! He just returned from overseas training techs and his inbox is slammed with requests. He is scheduling time each day again to answer techline orders. He does not have the bandwidth to provide free email replies as his schedule is full with shop customers, training schedules, and one on ones. There's good news though! Shane has 2 solutions for you. One is a deep dive one-on-one with him with video, email and phone support. The other is a "quick fan support" option when it's a quick answer and just helps support the time for him to stop wrenching or training and get you in the direction that a free video had you close. Links to each are below. Hope this message makes sense to you as a decent human being that also works for a living and gets it! Make it a great day! The one-on-one service. Very informative, great video. Just want to ask you if that applies in a twin Mikuni carbs for a 1995 XV750 Yamaha Virago?: I mean, the floats should be parallel to the side of de carburator?. Coudn't find the spec height and correct angle to make the adjustment other than the one that the Hayes and Clymer user manuals describe and requires an special tool that is a hose attached to the carb, the bike needs to be leveled and idling, and every thing hot and vibrating ...? . A few months ago bought this bike, started to service it myself, it ran fine in iddle and 2nd, 3rd and 4th speed, but after a 10 mile ride, I feel the bike heats excesively. When I cleaned the carbs readjusted the floats height to 25mm instead of 23mm , following the procedure in the video from ShortMg270: Yamaha virago carb disassembly, minute 13:55 kzbin.info/www/bejne/h5vUd6yCeqp-hdE So I went to the pilot screws that were only 1/2 a turn open., to a 2 3/4 open. When did a test ride, the fist two miles where fine, but when getting speed 35mph started to backfiring, loosing power and again heating. Solved the backfiring, the carb for the back cylinder had an air leak in the hose that goes to the piston, but lack of power, stumbling and heating continues. Any help will be appreciated, thank you Shane.

Great instruction. Could this be my issue on my 96 Suzuki 1400? Two rebuilt carbs. the front carb has mixture screw set at 2 turns out. the rear carb has mixture screw set at 1 turn. From the factory, I think as these had welch caps on them. I can get the motor running but having to hold my hand over rear carb almost fully shut off from the air. I can rev the engine a bit as long as I compensate my fingers further apart to restrict a bit less air flow. Perhaps it could be the float angle? Or would you think it needs to be able to run richer? The bike is worth about a grand running. If I take it to service then I'm sure I'd never profit by selling it. Has 1500 miles. Was stored inside a garage for 23 years. Like new. Only these carbs are the problem with it running right now. Nothing else wrong. It has a new fuel pump I added, with new fuel lines. Surely vacuum would not be an issue here?

Yes, very good explanations! My question is, at what throttle range or rpm range or throttle action in general does the float hight/ga slevel in the float bowle comes into play and how do I sense it, if it is too lean or too rich? What will hapen, if too lean or too rich on the float hight/gas level? And how to set up a float needle sice to correct spec after individual tune of engine? (talking about 2-strokes!) Many thanx. Cheers

Thank you. If you want to target for longest life, you set high, that way as the float needle wears, it will lower and stay in the spec range longer. Make sense? All out performance tends to like it lower (richer). Keep in mind higher and lower is upside down as compared to on a running motorcycle.

Good info! FYI, the pin only installing in one direction is a Keihin feature (the manufacture of this, and many carbs for H-D.) There's a part in the video where you can see a symbol, looks kinda like a fat K, above the Harley Davidson name. That's Keihin's logo symbol. Keihin was/is OEM to Honda and others.

Hi shane great video!! I wonder if you could help me understand the lean & rich mixture ldea a bit more when adjusting the float level. I understand that if theres not enough fuel in the bowls the engine wont have enough fuel when you open the throttle & will probably cut out etc. But if there is a bit too much fuel in the bowls wont the jets meter it upon demand & that if there is much too much fuel in the bowls wont it just be dumped through the overflow pipes? Cant quite get my head around it. Any explanation would be much appreciated!! Kind regards!! Robin
