This is still my go to for big family holidays. My mom made it by popular demand and after she passed, the tradition passed to me. We do use the pumpernickel bread and it is just so good. I also use a food processor, just to get it smooth and chill it overnight and it is just the best. So many good memories.

@@yesterkitchen I hope that didn't come off rude, sorry if it did! Do you think there's a taste difference with cooking the spinach first? I just made it last week. It's hard to find whole sourdough rounds. But finally found one in the bakery section at Safeway. It's a holiday staple with my family. By the time dinner is ready I'm full from eating spinach dip. Just a few weeks ago I did a bunch of googling about this dip and how it started. What a walk down memory lane. This dip was served at every gathering in the bread bowl. If I had it at my house, I looked forward to devouring the bowl after the dip was gone. I watched all the soaps on ABC. Some of my friends got into Young and the Restless so I had to watch it to stay in the conversation. My mom and my MIL watched one on CBS, As the World Turns. I had to google it to get the title. I never got very excited about the huge fundraiser concerts. The more hype, the less I was interested. I do remember there was a day when Phil Collins played on two continents. Life was so much simpler back then.

Wasn't life wonderful!! Definitely miss the simplicity. Many of my friends were on other soaps too but I was pure GH, especially during the Luke and Laura series! Stellar! In the '80's I spent a fair amount of time working the Hunter/Jumper "A" Horse Show Circuit...before the Texas/Oklahoma Oil Boom died, there was a lot of money being thrown at Hunter/Jumpers. I remember watching the caterers for one particular Exhibitors' Party setting up. There was shrimp cocktail, prime rib, spiral-cut ham and heck, Jill, there was even caviar! But I stood there transfixed as I watched this purportedly "hoity-toity" catering service employee make an enormous batch of this, just like you did, including Knorr Vegetable Mix but maybe not with enough attention to detail and taste as you to bother with the scallions! Well, they may have redeemed themselves, though, because they did have about eight or ten artisan bread rounds hollowed out to fill. You are the BOMB, Jill!

I love this dip! To obtain pumpernickel bread bowl: Make classic Corned Beast and Cabbage on St. Patrick's Day. Include on the standard menu the standard Rye with Caraway and Onion. Collect from my daughter the crust, which has been freed of its innards and hidden away on top of the refrigerator. Pull recipe out of my mom's cookbook (the fabulous dip her aunt has always made) and pretend to look at it while following the recipe off the box. Suddenly realize the family dining room has reached twice its capacity which is unrivalled by the hungry work crew which is filing in from the garage. Swiftly begin assembling grilled cheese sandwiches while holding the adorable grandbaby, and ignore everyone who says it must all be home made. I'm at home, I made it, and I'm sure whatever I serve, it's better than the paste some of those guys used to eat in kindergarten. At the very least, I look like a genius, and my daughter gets a needed break while I teach the baby all about coffee. Those food companies knew what they were doing.

I have a question. What was the first recipe for you that made you say to yourself. I have to find more of these. The first recipe I collected was two recipes one for perfect rice and the other was fantastic chicken gravy. I found the recipe in a I believe it was a 1950's detective novel by Brett Halliday called" The Corpse that Never was". I still use the recipes the chicken gravy is wonderful you pour the drippings from the chicken let the grease solidify skim off the grease then put the drippings back with the font add a good knob of sweet butter not salted .Sweet that's important and put on the burner add two cloves of garlic and cook gently until they give their all to the drippings and butter mixture stirring constantly the add good chicken broth and a some cornstarch to thicken. Let this cook down to your preferred thickness of gravy. I've never gone wrong with this you should try it you will really love it.

Oh yum Elizabeth! This sounds fabulous! I saved it and will definitely try it next time I make a chicken!! Thank you so much for sharing!! Hmmmmm.....I've been reading cookbooks as books as long as I can remember. But I think the first recipe that really got my attention was called the Jolly Breakfast Ring which I learned in 7th grade cooking. Yep, back when they had cooking classes in school. It was a monkey bread of sorts where you made your own dough and rolled all the balls in cinnamon/sugar and chopped nuts! I actually still have my typed and mimeographed (lol!) copy somewhere. The teacher hand wrote little music notes around the recipe. I can see it so clearly! It's packed right now but one of these days maybe I'll make an episode about it. But it wasn't a recipe that lead me down my path. it was the fascination of all recipes and where they came from. And here we are now. LOL! And I', super happy you are here!! Have a beautiful day! 🍸💖

Okay, I was JUST about to make this again and noticed the frozen chopped spinach should be cooked first. I'm pretty sure we always skipped that part. Do you know how necessary it is to cook it, and if so, how do YOU usually do it?
@yesterkitchen2 жыл бұрын
Hi Meg! When I recreate these vintage recipes, I always honor the original recipe by following them exactly. For my day to day cooking, I never look at a recipe and make everything up, lol! So yes, I do cook the spinach. But that said, I've heard from so many people that skip that step in their dip turns out just fine. Especially since the spinach is already cooked before frozen. So you're just kind of bringing it back to life a little bit. For this specific one, I really don't think there's much of a difference. For me, I get so much enjoyment from truly stepping back in time and making these dishes as written. But it is delicious no matter what! Hope that helps!

Are you ready for Heaven? Have you ever lied, stolen used God's name as a curse word (O-M-G)? According to God's law, you're guilty. But wait, God loves you, he made a way out. God so loved the world that he gave his only son that whoever believes in him will not die but have everlasting life. John 3:16 Please think about it. Repent/believe before the rapture, before the one world government. Jesus died for you,live for him. Love U
