I was born and raised in Hollywood, CA, and it is rumored that my grandparents started taking me to the Smoke House when I was 4 years old! Now, I'm 65 and have lived in Olympia, WA for over 30 years. My sisters and I flew down to L.A. for my 60th birthday for a trip down Memory Lane, and of course my birthday dinner was at the Smoke House restaurant. The garlic bread (and the prime rib) was just as amazing as it was back in the day! I am so excited to try this recipe so I won't have to order it when my cousin comes to visit from Victoria, B.C.! So many fond memories of days gone by are tied to the Smoke House restaurant ❤

I think the meat should be the dead giveaway on which one is correct. The NY "origin" uses the wrong meat, a real Rubin Sandwich has corned beef as the main ingredient, and the "original reuben" from New York didn't have that as an ingredient. Also, it's called "corn beef" because it was preserved in corn, and Nebraska has plenty of corn fields within the state that could preserve it. While NYC is a gigantic city that doesn't have any farms as far as I'm aware. So, looking at the two origin stories, I'd say Nebraska's makes more sense.
@yesterkitchenАй бұрын
I'm going to give you an A+ for effort. But I need to correct your information for my audience. Corned beef has absolutely nothing to do with corn. "Corned" is a term for curing and preservation. Before we had refrigerators, we "corned" meat meaning we coated them in salt pellets which had a similar size/shape as corn kernels (ah-ha!) giving it the name of "corning". This method preserved the meat. Today, we brine (rest in salt water for a prolonged time) meat instead but the name of "corning" remained. So hence....Corned Beef! And I agree that I think it was Nebraska. But we'll never know for sure! :)

I have been hungry for taco salad and came across your video. I also grew up in So. Calif, born and raised in the San Fernando Valley. I have great memories having this for dinner at home as well as get togethers at the homes of friends of my parents. Thank you! Oh, also... I went to Burroughs High School in Burbank for the first year of high school, one year behind Ron Howard, who I knew but didn't hang out with. But his girlfriend at the time lived a few houses down from us on Lima St. and I would often see him coming down our street in his VW bug to pick her up and take her to the studio where he was filming Happy Days. Then our parents bought a home up in Saugus and I finished high school there, graduating from Hart High in Newhall.
