OMG. I'm 1 minute into this video and realized I've been doing knot magic for years. I knit baby blankets for my friends and family. I have always believed that every child should have something that was made just for them that was done with love and that child was prayed over with each stitch. Absolutely imbued with protection and love for that specific child. I never thought of it as folk magic.

Honestly to me even the act of knitting (or crocheting, sewing etc) is magic. You start with a ball of yarn, seemingly incomprehensible instructions (or make it up as you go) and then you have a sock! I have a pair of gloves I knitted years ago that have a swear in every stitch and they make me feel like a badass whenever I wear them

One really cool way of doing knot magic that has apparently been around for ages is to essentially "store" a spell in a knot. You capture it in a knot and then when you want to active the spell and release that energy you simply untie the knot! I just found out about that technique recently and I'm so excited to try it. I love on the go simple magic so much!

As a handy-craft witch, I use my sewing machine a lot in my spellwork. With intentioning/purposing a machine-stitched object/garment, Intent is sent through the thread as if it's simply another line along with the thread. It's a great way to build power into something, building and growing as the energy of the machine is spent into the object you're sewing. Much like intentioning something while letting stream water flow over it. The Intent goes along with the flowing thing. Instead of making an intent or spell per 'knot', machine sewing is perfect for enchanting the entire large object with your spell.

One of my first spells was a protection jar (open top, worked with like a bowl) that I hung in the corner of my room with macrame- I added beads with sigils drawn on them, and lowkey that thing has been working longer and more efficiently than any other spell I’ve done. I’ve also made friendship-bracelet-style keychains for my car keys, strung one onto my purse that I bring with me mostly everywhere, a bookmark for my grimoire… the possibilities with this kind of magic are seriously endless. Totally onboard with the point on stuffed animals, a friend of mine had her birthday a couple of months ago, and I gave her two hand made soulmate frogs, so one day when she finds her soulmate she can give one of the frogs to them, and inside each frog I put a little piece of fabric with a love sigil stitched into it.

You can make spell water with your intention to dip your yarn, or thread in let it dry then use it in a machine stitch verses just hand stitching. I also recommend it if you're easily distracted during your practice it kind of takes the worry out of it ❤️

I've started macrame stone wrapping necklaces and id love to keep learning more about macrame! when I would braid my hair in the morning as a kid I would think about my day and then in highschool I would braid my hair and braid wishes into my hairso once it's grown out a bit more I think I'll definitely start implementing that into my practice :)

This wasn't knot magic, but I remember how last summer I was pitting cherries and I really wanted to get into a particular study program, so as I was pitting the cherries, putting in my energy, I kept saying my intention silently as a mantra, it was really meditative 😄 (and I got into that program!)

What could also be interesting is when you wax a thread before (hand)sewing, you could use an infused wax. For something to bring calm, you could use lavender infused wax and then use knot magic to sew it in. Or when you need to block a knitted or crocheted piece, using herbs in the water you block with.

I wonder if you set the intention before you start braiding if it would be enough? Or play a song that really carries the energy of what you want to appear as while you braid and bring that song into your braids somehow? So you don't have to focus on too many things at once lol, let something else do the work with you.

Oh wow, I had no idea I was already doing knot magic! I knit, and whenever I do a candle spell, I sit with the candle with my knitting until the candle self extinguishes. I did a spell months ago to get my dream job, and I repeated (in my head) my intention into every stitch (for ~2.5 hours). The next morning, I got the callback that I’d gotten the job! I have always been a practitioner, ever since i was little but inner turmoil makes my success iffy at best. However the knot spells i have done have been my crowning achievements but i actually do them in a way ive never heard of. I crochet and so for my knot spells i do multiple ‘knots’ but they are each a link in a classic crochet chain. When i am done i actually pull the yarn and undo the entire thing and to me that releases the magical intention i made it with. Maybe this will inspire others as is my hope with sharing!

Sounds very similar to how I have known knot magic here in Germany in folk magic. The spell is activated by the dissolution of the knot. A very classic knot magic, which I learned as a child from my grandpa (an atheist from the picture book, I understood only last year that this was magic 😅): if you want to remember something, you think of it and make a knot in a (cloth) handkerchief. Then when you need to remember it, you untie the knot. In coastal areas, you used to be able to buy wind charms: A rope in which knots were, for favorable winds, against storms, etc. If the sailor then needed a favorable wind on the sea or saw a storm coming up, the knot was opened & the spell was activated or unleashed.

Something I love doing is spinning thread that I'll use as part of it as well. Setting intentions as I spin the thread, and then I can process it and use it in sigil work for the same intention, or another similar intention

This is a great topic. I started to learn embroidery (using Mystical Stitches by Christi Johnson, in case anyone was curious ) and just bought Cord Magic by Brandy Williams so I can know more about this. I've got this thing I made recently. I took three different colored strings and braided them together, then I did that two more times and braided the braids together. Then I covered it in beeswax. Now I keep it in my pocket for fast magic. I should probably keep some small strips of paper with me too so that I can mark the intentions I put into each knot, just in case I need to hold multiple spells at once for different lengths of time.

I love knot magic.....I first had the "so original" idea of using the different sailor's knots that my granpa taught me (he loved nautical stuff) so each kind of know would also serve magical purposes...then I found so many different kinds of sailor's knots that really, they even look like grimoires since they have so many different functions

I love knot magic, I always feel a connection with my art but with painting and drawing it's harder for me to get into a meditative state. But crochet and sewing and knitting it's so rhythmic that if you don't need an extreme amount of counting it's perfect for setting intentions

I would think- and I think I’m gonna do this- with a quilt, if you chose the colors an did broad patterns- I’m probably going to do a rainbow- and as I sew (on a machine) I would chant something I want to imbue in accordance with the color. So for red, I would say something like ‘I am passionate, I am loved’ or while sewing, and just hand sew some bits (maybe the binding or adding sigils like you suggested)

And also, to add to what you presented for the sharing of some more ideas of what people can do, you can essentially do the same thing when creating metal chains for necklaces and bracelets. All you need is a thick enough and sturdy enough wire, cutting it to approximately even lengths, and then bend each piece you cut to create loops, looping them together until you've made the length of chain you want. However, if you do want to attach something like a pendant or charm to it for an extra boost to what you want to accomplish, you would then create a separate loop from your wire to loop through the loop of the pendant or charm and around the chain. This allows the pendant or charm to move freely along the chain. You could also just attach it directly to the chain if you don't want it to move freely along the chain. But you should cut a separate piece or two of wire to link from the chain to the pendant or charm so it helps to allow it to lay flat.

something I like to do, is create an energy ball with my specific intention and then put it in my yarn that im using if that makes sense, or I just enchant the yarn in some way. Then when I'm crocheting or knitting I can imagine my intent as interwoven in the yarn as maybe a silver string for example. I find it useful because it allows me to not have to think during the entire project if I don't want to

I love weaving my own cords via kumihimo or lucet. While weaving the cord, intention can also be introduced & in the kumihimo cord, the intention might be shown in the pattern. Lucet cord looks boxy & kumihimo cord is tubular & beads or charms can be added to the weave. With knotwork Magick using these cords, the intention would be magnified.
