Cool seeing that the fish chase the anchor on retrieval to snack on what's revealed underneath.

Great Video! I have learned to put a small length of chain between the swivel and the anchor. This way if current or wind changes you won't put all the load on the pin sideways. The Rocna digs in and holds so well that it won't spin. The pin can only take so much. That you for your videos, well done!
@KnotVikings4 жыл бұрын
That is very true and if you can it’s a good idea on our boat that won’t work because of where the windlass Is. when the wind turns 180 degrees the anchor will break free but for us it has always dug in again straight away. Even in som pretty intense squalls.

@KnotVikings5 жыл бұрын
They also make great anchors, personally I haven’t tried it so can’t say for sure what is better but I know we haven’t dragged with our Rocna even when we can’t put out the scope we normally do.
@MikeSantis5 жыл бұрын
@@KnotVikings some youtube videos suggest and proves that actually Mantus is even better than Rocna. I'm a bit sceptical that maybe Rocna got a big push, talk and popularity among the sailors community and that is also the reason that is more popular than Mantus and not that it is actually better than Mantus. I would like to upgrade my CQR to a Rocna next year. But the more I research the more I turn to Mantus. Will see. Also, how heavy is your Rocna and how heavy is your boat?
@KnotVikings5 жыл бұрын
That is true I was watching a lot of the comparison videos and I testing anchors is really difficult to get real life results, if the anchors are set well I would argue that the difference is negligible. The real question for me is how well they perform in less than ideal situations like small scope, Rocky/difficult bottoms and so on. For me price would be a huge factor, you could also check out Manson anchors same concept as the other ones and haven’t met that many cruiser that have them but the ones that do are very happy that I have met. We have a 37ft boat but she weighs in on a whopping 14ton so we have a 25kg Rocna with an 8mm chain. Rocna recommends a 10mm chain but if we went down that road we would have to replace the windlass and that’s not something I want to get into.

Currently still cruising around south florida through hurricane season. We're hunting for a bigger boat to truly go "full time". This is a good place to do that as well as get our boat sold. Planning to head back to the Bahamas in the next month or two, probably Bimini and Berry Islands.
@torgeirnag95424 жыл бұрын
Rockna does not reccomend using a swivel directrly on the anchor. rocna.com/knowledge-base The failure mode of swivels is typically when they are subjected to lateral forces. This means it is ideal to install the swivel in such a way that lateral forces cannot be applied across the joint. One way to do this is to use a reputable inline type with a few links of chain between the anchor and the swivel. Generally, installing the swivel directly on the anchor shank is not a great idea.

@KnotVikings6 жыл бұрын
It’s an awesome anchor! Yes you are right We always put a rope snubber in, recently we started doing before backing down on the anchor. Read somewhere that it was better for the windlass.
@Misteribel Жыл бұрын
You read that right ;). Windlasses are usually rated for a few thousand Newton, which you'd easily surpass if you go 2500 rpm in reverse. And it depends on how the windlass is connected to the boat. Bottom line, be careful with your expensive equipment ❤.

yes i sail mate,,, we met you in the Keil cannal on your way out last year ,, , that was my blue catamaran,, i always watch your videos, i think they are good,,,,instead of UV protection for me the " sock " would be to protect from ice and frost etc over the winter period to save me dropping the sail,, i know that you will understand that !!! i also found that video interesting regarding the Rocna as , like yourself , a Bruce is my anchor of choice and it is interesting having someone from my / our part of the world changing from his Bruce to the Racnor. measured up today and will put in an order to get a protection sock made up tomorrow...

Really cute idea of diving down to check the anchor is set... I guess you never anchor deep or in high/ low latitudes...
@KnotVikings3 жыл бұрын
Cute? I think it goes without saying that you do that only if it’s possible :) Whenever we have the possibility to do so, yes we do that. But lately we have been sailing in murky waters of Sweden anchoring sometimes in 20m and no, then we don’t dive on it. Have a nice summer and thanks for watching!
@Misteribel Жыл бұрын
@@KnotVikingsI agree, cute is not the word I'd use. Any serious sailor will often dive to see if the anchor is set. In clear water, like in the Med, I don't need to, as I can see it with an aquascope. To be fair, with good anchors like Rocna, Mantus or Spade, I get lazy and skip on it. But with the CQR I did it all the time.
@devmich996 жыл бұрын
Same anchor, same experience. IMO the best you can get. Downside: old 1000W Windlass makes it hard to break the anchor out of the bottom at times ;-) I probably should make a video as well and hope for a cash back from Rocna? :D
@KnotVikings6 жыл бұрын
Yeah we also have a 1000w windlass if the pull is just a little sideways we can’t really lift it 🙈. They do have the affiliate program so give it a shot! 😉

Shorten your scope 2:1 and cleat off your chain to a solid cleat then motor over your anchor and it will pop right out and save your windlass.
@Misteribel Жыл бұрын
But be careful, as the chain will scratch your boat. Better to just use a trip line. 2 min work to set it up, and much relief when getting the anchor back up.

I need to figure out if the Rokna is right for me. I can carry only 20 feet of chain and 200 feet of nylon rode.
@barrydavies29775 жыл бұрын
Hi. You give no indication of your boat, sailing area, or requirements. So it's impossible to advise. For my boat, we shortlisted to the rokna and mantus anchor for the bow, (we chose mantus), and fortress for the kedge. Fyi mixed chain and rope is ok for sand and mud. Use chain only for (dead) coral and sharp rocks. It cuts through the rope.
@jsonnichsen5 жыл бұрын
Barry Davies Hello Barry We are a bit unusual. Living full time on a 33’ trimaran. We start cruising next summer. We leave Maine USA bound for Newfoundland , Canada. From there he head south for the Caribbean. Mostly coastal cruising with an occasional overnighted. Anchoring will be the vast majority of stops. I can’t Cary tons of chain on this small boat. We also have no windless. Thank you. Jeff
@barrydavies29775 жыл бұрын
@@jsonnichsen ok. This is just my view. Others may disagree. Your boat is a similar size to mine. So you need to check that your bow arrangements will take the hoop and shape of new generation anchors. If you have space I would choose a 20kg mantus (1st choise) or rokna (2nd choice) and 7kg fortress kedge. In my experience the fortress is hugely powerful, but does not like changes of direction. Chain and warp is acceptable if you take account of my notes above. Hope that is some help.
@jsonnichsen5 жыл бұрын
Barry Davies Thank you for replying. I do have room for a new generation anchor and have been leaning toward the Mantis. I think the Fortress will be my secondary anchor which would work great off my stern. Thanks again for verifying. Jeff
