We have 5 gallon food safe buckets in our food stock. We have oatmeal, pasta, sugar, flour, beans and rice. Then we have a large stock pile of canned goods, kind of a little bit of everything. I keep everything in rotation and repurchase things as we use it. We also have about 20 case of water bottles in our garage. It’s always a good idea to be prepared!

This past year has taught us so much. It was honestly a scary time when everything shut down and you couldn’t find food at the stores. Last year was the first year but we ended up putting in a garden an plan to expand it this summer

That is what we are doing too! It is only my 2nd year doing a big veggie garden. Last year was a bit of a flop, but I learned so much! I live down South and have already gotten cooler weather crops in. I will be planting seeds to sprout this weekend to put in the garden later to help sustain the crops I already have planted. I'm hopeful this year will be more successful!

My folks were born right after the depression and they always had cash in the house, they didn’t have debit cards then and rarely used credit. I do remember my dad teaching us to have a variety of cash, $1, $5, $10 and so forth. Don’t get all $20 or higher. It may be hard to make change.

I also have 6 grown kids and 14 grandkids plus with our mothers who are widowed we keep extras of everything so that we can help who needs it. We did so before but def. learned that lesson when covid hit with all the food shortages. It felt good to know we were able to help others and still be in a good place for ourselves. The kids always ragged me and said GEES MOM ARE YOU EXPECTING A ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE? But then when covid hit i was the one ragging them saying HOW ABOUT THAT ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE NOW BUDDY!?

The gallon jugs are fine, but they will begin to break down and leak after about 6-12 months. Because of this you might want to find a sturdier longer lasting jug OR do as I learned to do and find a dishpan or bin that will hold multiple gallons at once. One leak will ruin a closet or floor! A plastic dish pan will generally hold 4 gallons, just something to be aware of!

Yep. My 2.5 gal water jugs split and leaked. It was terrible. Also, water bottles will eventually diminish and taste like plastic. They are good for serving size and portability but it’s not the best idea to rely solely on them. We do different size denominations of water storage.

I don't have candles, but have a small solar charger and string L.E.D lights with a USB. If lights go out, they are bright enough to be comfortable (some even have a dimmer remote); the get really bright). You can also stretch out the wire and have lights in multiple rooms.

These videos are so very helpful and much appreciated. Anyone else feeling overwhelmed in these crazy times? I have been stocking up but there are so many categories to cover: food and water, meds and first aid items, things to clean with, extra toiletries, items to keep you cool if power goes out, items to keep you warm if power goes out. So many possibilities...

I think it is good to get a little extra of different things instead of buying bulk of one item. Just start buying two of things if your budget allows. Our thoughts now are how to stay cool during the summer in Florida if we lose electricity from hurricanes. So much to try to be prepared for even when there isn’t a pandemic.

Very overwhelming. I break it into weekly projects like this. Inventory canned vegetables, rotate the old into the working pantry or feed to the chickens. Review favorite recipes and buy more of what I need for 12x that recipe. Figure that in 6 months I will make the recipes twice. I rotate weekly thru the prep categories, covering each 2x a year.

I never kept cash in the house either but 2 days after the shutdowns we had an earthquake in Salt Lake City and it completely freaked me out! I had a friend text me to say there was good information that there were going to be problems with getting gas and our debit cards may not work. Of course, nothing like that happened (other than empty store shelves) but I went to my credit union and withdrew $1k. It gives me a bit of comfort knowing that if something drastic were to happen, I've got cash on hand just in case.

HI All. Long time prepper here. One inexpensive "tool" I have on hand is glow sticks. I started buying these in bulk when my kids were little. It started off as a way to entertain them while camping and then as they got older, I found that glow sticks (white and light blue) work great as night lights when there is no electricity. Not only do they put off a great amount of light, but also help children not fear major storms/power outages since the glow sticks are fun and can be used as an exciting and fun way to look forward to the dark. I personally like to string up a line of them in the kitchen and bathroom so we can see without having to worry about candles or other lighting sources that require batteries. I normally purchase these for pennies from bulk party stores online.

I am fairly well set up for about two years worth of preps as I'm by myself it was quicker to set up. but I like to watch videos of so many homesteaders and preppers, to find things that I have not thought about. Reading the comments give so many extra ideas, so when I find something new I thank you for the wonderful idea.

I am starting to see the point from a Secular perspective of Food Storage, especially since I'm Autistic and have a lot of food sensory issues which restrict my diet. My main safe foods are pasta, tomato based sauces, ketchup, tinned (canned) fruit etc, and this tends to be what is panic bought in my area when Covid restrictions increase. In my case my safe foods always have to be the same brand so if, for example Heinz Mayo is out of stock, I couldn't buy Hellman's instead. (I don't eat Mayo but its just an example using brands available internationally) I don't know what is in the news in the US regarding Brexit (The UK leaving the European Union) but I live in Northern Ireland and we have the raw end of the deal. The Deal that was eventually struck regarding import and export of goods says that there are new restrictions regarding the transport of food or livestock from England, Scotland or Wales to Northern Ireland (Packages also have to be customs checked buts that's another story) and this has caused massive disruptions regarding what is available in stores and the most random of items can be out of stock depending on the chain. For example; A supermarket called "Tesco" down the street from me hasn't had Nutella or other Chocolate based spreads since before January, but a "Sainsbury's" Supermarket 2 miles from my house has an abundance of this but cannot get certain cereals. I'm not in the position to do food storage full stop as I'm not the one doing, or paying for groceries but my family has agreed to put away extras of my main "Safe Foods" in case of further Covid restrictions or additional Brexit import issues (The EU and the GB Government are having a bit of a ding dong over these restrictions right now) messing up the food supply chain. But if I am ever in the position of living alone I defiantly will.

That sounds awful, I'm sorry you're going through that. Here in the US we have so much and it's sad to me to hear of this happening in your country, seems covid has literally affected everything. I definitely understand the food preferences due to sensory issues. I know you mentioned mayonnaise...maybe have a try at making your own? Only thing is I know it definitely doesn't last as long, but it probably tastes better, as long as it agrees with your texture or taste preferences. I hope things get better for you.

I started stocking up 10 years ago. With a background in restaurant management, it was fun to get my shelves stocked and never run out of anything. I joke and say I am running to the store when I step into my pantry room to pick out an item I just ran out of in my kitchen. My husband laughs. I would rather have these hundreds of dollars worth of food in my pantry than the money in the bank. We also have 50 one dollar bills, 100 dollars in 5’s and 100 dollars in 10’s stuck away in a fireproof box. This month I am canning corned beef, red potatoes and baby carrots. All separately. I try to always can the sale items. I raw packed turkey right after Christmas when the breasts went on sale. I make goals for myself every month. Thanks for your videos. I learn something from all these great videos from homemakers and homesteaders. Going to go check my medical supplies now. Bless you. Oh by the way, lds.org really has great prices online for those basics (beans, oats, rice, flour etc) and shipping is dirt cheap.

We live in Fla. & no basements...so, last year we started researching tons on line & here we went. Bought 2 canners. Taught ourselves. Emptied my walk in closet. Built a metal shelf & it holds all our home canning. We have our stove, gas, battery lights. Our garage has long bins ( 5) with toiletries, medical supplies ( vitamins are in house), toiletries. We also built another shelf & it is IN MY BEDROOM! Yes, we have a grocery store in here!. All dated. Every time I shop, I see what we need & I buy few items. It DOES GET OVERWHEMING at time & EXPENSIVE. I recommend a budget. We are on SSI so our $ is tight. Next, we seal a meal. We have spice packets, gravies, flour, sugar, tea bags, anything packed. You have to cut a little slit on bag ( top) then seal. We have pop tarts, snacks, pancake mix, oatmeal, cereal, potatoes ect. OVEN CANNED: dry pasta, rice, beans, dry cereal. YOU HAVE TO U TUBE " PREPPING". I am always on looking for more ideas. Tessie's Hoestead, Whipporwill Hollow, Linda's Pantry & many more. I have arthritis bad, daughter with Epilepsy & 74 yr mentally challenged brother. I only drive. CURRENT PROJECT: Getting ready to can mandrian oranges, broth, soups before our Fla. heat hits.

I keep the 5 gallon jugs of water like the culligan water jugs and the cheaper no power water dispenser that you can get at Walmart. As a back up I have an aqua pure (like a Berkey) for local creek water if I need it. We have a creek that goes under my driveway. We also have 2 large trash cans and screen that we can attach to wood and put on top to keep mosquitoes out that we can set up if we need for water catchment for watering the garden or washing clothes. I don’t have that set up it’s just my back up. 1 is none and 2 is 1, always have that backup especially with something as vital as water.

I was right in the middle of the snow storm in Texas last month and was also in the midst of moving to a new house. I know not many people mention this in prepping for disasters, but think about cardboard, waterproofing tape and tarps. We had our back patio collapse from the snow and break a large window. We couldn’t get out to the hardware store for plywood, but luckily we had cardboard boxes from our move that we used to board up the window temporarily. I know that trees fell from the weight of the snow and plastic tarps were hard to find to make quick roof repairs. Thank you so much for doing this series. Sometimes when you live somewhere small you need to store food in unexpected places. Our pantry is in our bedroom closet, and under our bed. My family that lives in the UK has some of their pantry in the cupboard under their stairs, some in a wardrobe in a spare room, and some hidden in their dining room. Look for things that can do double duty like ottomans/footrests that have storage built into them. The ikea Malm bed is a great example, you can buy drawers that slide under it for extra storage.

Here in Australia, the C19 cases, thankfully, is very low. For the past 20yrs I have been a stockpiler. It stood us in good stead over the Xmas period when work dried up (we were driving instructors until hubby's health caused us to have to close our business, and we are now on disability pensions). Around Sept- Nov 2019 I got anxious, bad dreams of food being is short supply, impending doom etc, and talked hubby into ramping up our stockpile. We turned the back bedroom into a craft/sewing/ walk in pantry. BOY am I glad we did as by Feb '20 the SHTF and we went into our first lockdown. Because of my longterm stockpiling and the additions we added in those few months, we were able to survive quite nicely. I had stocked up on as much medication as possible, pet supplies, and yes plenty of TP lol. While others were running around like chickens without heads, we calmly shut ourselves in. Hubby and our youngest daughter are immune compromised, so it was manditory we keep away from everyone. Our eldest daughter is a nurse so she had to work (nursing home ). She made weekly welfare visits to check on us lol. In the past she would tell me I was mad having so much on hand, being a minimalist she would only shop weekly etc. Well she rang me in desperation as they had run out of TP, and could I spare any. When she picked it up she apologised for critising my methods, and had now started to put some basics aside. She finally sees the wisdom of what we do. With 3 freezers in the garage, and our back room pantry I estimate we can comfortably live 12mnth or more. I do canning, dehydrate, sew quilts from repurposed materials, hubby likes to make things from recycled timbers (but at the moment he is rebuilding his 1975 Triumph Trident motorcycle to sell) He is a keen fisherman and works 2 days a week at Anaconda, a sporting/camping store - fancy putting a fisherman loose in the fishing department - like letting Dracula loose in a bloodbank lol. He loves it, is a born salesman, and it gives him a boost to know he can still contribute to our income. I still do the occasional driving lesson, mostly for family and friends. I have set our food budget at $450 per month, this doe not include toiletries or cleaners or pet needs, which is do-able with the methods I use, inspite of food prices in Australia being quite high. I envy the bargains I see on US bloggs, I wish I could get stuff for those prices. I prowl markdowns, and try not to buy anything unless it is at least 1/2 price and then I stock up.

Thank you for this video series. I love that you give amounts to work towards. I also love the keep cash on hand and a very do-able amount for most people. A preparedness man talked a group I was in and he said to keep small amounts of cash in your car as well, in case you need to get gas and there is no power for gas pumps. They can still sell you gas most likely but you can't use the pump card reader. He advised keeping it in an envelope or waterproof baggies and keep it like under the rug or something. Not in glove compartment as that is where thieves look first. Start small and win big!! Thank you!!

One of my friends wrote a book about Emergency preparedness and she recommended at least $100 cash saved in $1 bills. I'm working on it because I use cash so infrequently. But that way you can make exact change (or close to it) instead of just saving five $20 bills. Small denomination cash is the best way for emergencies. I also have water storage but I did invest in those really large thick plastic water storage things. I think I have 20 gallons in the garage (its just me so this would last 3 weeks and it never freezes here) Great content again!!

That allowed me to use it for storage.

I bought the Preppers Pantry book and wasn't amused. I returned it. I'm looking for another book. We're in Texas and water is definitely a storage priority but we are looking into water filtration devices in case we need to melt snow again. We are also looking into "go" bags and putting together specific first aide kits. Can goods, beans, rice, pasta are going to be staples. Charcoal and wood stock piles for the BBQ pits. Generators, but that is serious research because they are expensive. We've even designated a room we will only be in so we don't have to power the whole house. We are even thinking about outages in summer months which can be brutal here. Prepping is the game now and we are thinking differently now. Even growing a vegetable garden might be an option but I haven't had luck in the past.

Now that I made an inventory list of what I have, it is easier to see where my gaps are because I’ve been working on this a couple years now. In February I did go to Sam's and got a big bag of pancake mix, we have already used about 1/3 of the bag! We go in spurts with pancakes, and lately everyone has been enjoying them. That bag will last me about another 3 months or so. We do not use powdered eggs, I am not as worried about eggs as I have a neighbor right down the lane that has tons of chickens and I can get access to eggs. Cereal is another tricky one for us. I did stock up on more grits, cream of wheat and oatmeal. We do not eat a lot of oatmeal in particular, but it is such a handy multipurpose grain that I always try to keep in in stock. I even grind it in my Ninja for oat flour sometimes. Cold cereals are not eaten in my house as much as they once were, but again I stocked up on my son's favorite kinds. (He loves cinnamon Cheerios and cinnamon Life.) I also got a few boxes of rice crispy cereal as again it is quite a versatile product! So far this month I have gotten black beans (we were almost out), and actually have quite a good amount of tomato products. I noted my green beans are low again, but beans in general are pretty well stocked! I want to use my pressure canner soon to make my own canned beans from dry. I made some last year and the family ate them up fast!

My 2 girls (18 and 20) are also very comfortable cooking , grilling and baking on the BBQ grill, which came in handy when our block had several electricity blackouts last year.. it is so much less stressful to know you still have other options and know how to use them before yoh need them

Also a good supply of washing up liquids and d/washer tabs. I found that these items were in short supply here in Canada last year as our supply chain out of Quebec was interrupted due to closure of the main rail line along the Quebec/Ontario border. Also, this month I plan on canning chicken thighs to round out my choice of canned meats. These are great choices when the power is down as the meat is already cooked and just needs re-heating.
