I wish I had learned all this at 18. That first sound at begin of video happened to me yesterday! I believe it was the starter! I was lucky enough to have a mechanic come out the grocery store and I should’ve asked if I had a dirty solenoid or if my starter need the banging to release the pin (the jam?). Anyhow, I’m thankful that people like you make videos like this! It’s so important. I get frazzled when I’m vehicle doesn’t start! I feel panicked! Worried!

For people that are having problems like this, another trick that works to know if the relay has gone bad, is to jump the two bolts with an isolated screwdriver (0:50), if the starter works, the problem might be the relay itself, a fuse that controls the relay, or the "s" cable that sends the signal from the ignition key to the relay itsfel. I'm currently waiting on a friend's tester to see if my S cable or relay is my actual problem. Starter working just fine.

Holy smokes! I think you just solved what's wrong with my motorcycle. The battery is brand new and everything lights up BUT the bike won't turn over. Instead, it's making the rapid "clicking sound" you mentioned which makes me suspect that it's the relay, not the starter. I already ordered the starter, and it's not hard to put in, so I will swap them both out.

I digged deeper into this fix, i thought it was wierd With One click. so i looked under the Hood and just wiggled at the starter cables Down onto the starter! And i just jumped into the car and turned the Key and it started right up! Try this before you buy a New starter or any other parts!

Check for the most obvious and simple first! I had installed a new battery 6 months prior. Now all I heard was a fast clicking sound. A jump start worded but seem to not hold a charge. The + and - had no corrosion and showed the battery terminal protector paste to prevent corrosion. However went checking the cable connection I was able to slightly wiggle the cable on the + side. The bold felt tight, so I used a wrench to really force the bold till the cable connection on the battery would not move at all. Next stated the car without any issue.

short trip, likely frosted up armature. if can reach with heat gun or propane torch could warm up, if wires around, use hair dryer or just be careful, deal with this all the time in plow truck and now that it is -30F and colder with wind chill, even longer trips, the starter ices up upon cooldown.. I see zerostart makes a couple different pad heaters, 3400051 is a 50 watt 3x3 12VDC silicone pad heater that we could attach to starter, run through relay and fuse to switch inside vehicle to use when this happens. they make small AC style units to, but that only works if you made it back home or near available AC power and have extension cord along.. I see this far more often with GM starters, not sure why, perhaps because I mainly drive GMs.. But live in area where Februaries can be 0F for a high and -50F wind chills at night so the frosting of the armature issue happens frequent enough that I may have to build a garage to park cars in so I know I have a ride that will always start when live miles away from help...

If it’s not your battery, the engine is not seized or frozen, the relay is good and the the hammer trick doesn’t work there is still one more thing and replacing the starter won’t fix it. There is a high amp fuse on the starter motor cable (not in your fuse box ) it is up néar the battery. Often doesn’t look like a normal fuse. Create a temporary bypass with some thick wire and see if the car will start. Mine did.

Great video....thx. I know this is not a forum to try and ask a question on a 7 year old video and expect to get a rapid response. But I am pretty sure my Starter is bad. It is just unlike any other diagnosis videos put out by anyone. Scenario: Brand New Battery - I get 1 Hard Click....then nothing. I have to disconnect my New Battery to get 1 Hard Click again. NOT a constant Clicking, not a Click every time I try to turn the key. Just 1 Hard Click, then nothing, dead, wont let me attempt to turn the key unless I fully disconnect and then reconnect the battery again :/
