When I was growing up my Uncle who is a bassist always had Bass Player magazine and stuff like that lying around, and when he got tired of having them laying around he would pass them on to me, along with Musician's Friend and other gear related magazines. Reading bass centric magazines, the same handful of names would ALWAYS come up in every single magazine back in the late 80's and early 90's. Jaco of course, Billy Sheehan, Victor Wooten, and Stu Hamm. I used to have actual dreams about owning a Stu Hamm Fender bass back in the day because they just looked so different from any other basses I had seen... I still see a lot of design language from those Stu basses being used to this day in very new bass models. Turns out those basses seem to be kind of like Parker Fly guitars or Zon basses in that you either REALLY like them or you can live without them entirely and never miss it or worry about it a day in your life. I'd still buy one if I could find one in good shape and for hilariously cheap in a divorce/fire sale or something

Highlighting a BASS for a change of PACE!! Good move, Mr. Phil!! The "Stu Hamm Thread" makes even more sense, since he eventually went to Warwick...as YOU did! Did his choice have anything to do with yours? Man, I'm really digging the Preamp feature in my new Charvel Pro-Mod P/J (New technology has certainly solved some of the issues present on the "Old-Schoolers", like that otherwise uber-kuul Fender "Artist" you are featuring, no?)

For me, the biggest reason for string spacing is to allow open string to ring. I can find away to mute, when necessary, but if I can' t get my fingers out of the way I need a wider string spacing. And, a 12" first position radius is the flattest I can cope with.

38:03 I have found that selecting electric guitar strings is a matter of trial and error to find the set that gives the feel, sound and durability being sought after. I have tried (for solid and semi-hollow body electric guitars) many different gauges; coated verus non-coated; , all stainless steel to nickel wrapped over a stainless steel core to pure nickel; and at all levels of expense. In the end, I narrowed my choices for all of my electric solid body and semi-hollow body guitars to those strings made of pure nickel, and as far as brands, I purchase either Fender 3150 Original Bullet-Pure Nickel or Gibson Les Paul Vintage Reissue Historic Era Specifications-Pure Nickel, and mainly in 3 sizes, 9-42, 9-46, or 10-46. They cost more. But, they give me the sound I am looking for, which is a little warmer, plus I like the feel of the nickel strings.

Boss’s Katana with their AB amp and Tone Logic emulation of a Marshall amp or, even my Zoom G3Xn multi effects unit with its Marshall 1959 amp and cab emulation is good enough to use at a gig at the volumes that you can play today! That’s the shame of the traditional amp companies, when the emulation systems are so close as to be “good enough” for most scenarios today! Unless you’re playing large venues and the gear really matters… 🤷‍♂️ why not use a more affordable, portable rig! Keep the great content coming Phil! ❤️👍🎶🎸✌️

My thing about bass pickups is it is determined by the players picking. For example I finger pick my p bass it has a Seymour Duncan pb3 and I think it sounds great. Buddy of mine hated it when he played then again he used a pick. So always very difficult to answer bass pickup questions. You had a great answer always enjoy your show and insights.

Not sure I agree with the reasoning that a fretless neck requires more labor than fretting a neck. From what I’ve seen fretboard radiusing is an automated process in high production factories rather than done by hand.
@neilpatrickhairless
@neilpatrickhairless 20 күн бұрын
Fretted necks are entirely different setups because the pull of the fret wire changes the inherent relief in the neck which has to be adjusted with the truss rod. I would assume it's harder to keep a backbow relief out of a fretless neck when building it for that reason. I wonder if it's more labor intensive because of that? Never made a fretless neck or even really considered it

Did you ever doanything on Crate amps? Growing up I had a Crate combo amp my Dad gave me with my first Samick Guitar. My Dad, when he thought of amps, just always thought of Crate, and I used to lust after those Crate Blue Voodoo stacks in the Musician’s Friend catalogue in the 90s. I have no idea if they’re even good, but they were blue when everything else was black (and said Randall on it it seemed). I’m just curious what happened to them, were any of them ACTUALLY cool/good, and is there ANY chance of somebody resuurecting it like Magnatone did?

I bought my son a Crate Blue Voodoo last year as his first tube amp. I know the Internet craps on the Crate BVs, but my son and I both love this amp. It has one of the best clean channels I have ever heard on a high gain amp. It also has a great sound on the high gain channel but you definitely need to dime the gain knob to really bring out that high gain tone.

I'm all for companies using the classic guitar shapes and making their own version like PRS or ESP, what I don't like is when companies copy the exact body size and shape, use the same pickguard, the same body carve, same bridge, change the headstock and sell it as their own unique product, that is just lazy design banking on the originals nostalgia.
@neilpatrickhairless
@neilpatrickhairless 20 күн бұрын
Do any of the companies that copy this stuff actually try to pass it off as unique? Furthermore, even if they did and it wasn't immediately apparent that it's not unique or original, wouldn't that be the problem of the company being copied? Don't make stuff that can be confused with a 1-6 hundred dollar guitar and try to sell it for 6-8 thousand dollars if it's that big of an issue

TL;DR When your Clean Tone is Good then your Big Tone Is Great Soo, I have played on Many, like 15+ old school Tube amps. About half of them were Fender Silverface and Blackface units in the mid 80's to early 90's (imagine a silverface Twin Reverb for 1 week of dishwasher pay and you'll understand). Tube Amps have a definite Harmonic Convergence. Each of these Fenders were quiet, reliable, responsive and most of all predictable. They are "Reference Tones" I could dime it all in, and like I tell my students "go BIG AF and then turn it down until it starts to stop suckin'."! Now with the 8-9 Marshalls and the Couple of Vox's and 2 janky Earth/Acoustic Bass Amps that I played these were also Tone MONSTERS - - at reasonable gain however… Since it was 1985-1995 people were going for High Gain with No Emphasis on Tone, Harmonics, Intervals, Intonation etc. It was about High Speed/Low Action ::COUNTERPOINT:: My current Favorite Amp is a Solid State Fender Champion 20. (*Hush*, -- Wait) I have all of the reference tones and with a lil'bit of knob turning I can get 90-85% of my Jazz/Funk Café tone. Yeah it does a great, well actually several great "edge of breakup" tones but this and a PodGO and I'm confused. See I can buy 4+ Champ 20s and be less than a PRS Hendrix 20 Head. BUT I CAN'T buy 5 Hendrix 20 heads and pick which ONE is perfect Clean and LOUD. Just had this happen last month at a Jam with an Orange 100 - on the Clean channel letting it push air and Gallop away from me, but then get the same tone the next day at practice with a Solid state 20. FACT is (the TL;DR of it) at least 70% of "Tone/Tonality/Timbre) in in the F★coin Knobs. When your Clean Tone is Good then your Big Tone Is Great

The idea that Gibson argued that consumers are basically stupid,(but of course in flowerly legal-eze language) and especially guitar consumers, that we'd confuse a copy made shape or style with a Gibson original is beyond insulting and clearly shows it's about the money for Gibson and not the actual guitar buyer! A counterfeit with Gibson's name on the headstock is one thing, but another guitar maker making a different or possibly better version of a Gibson style guitar, means Gibson needs to up their game.

I don't know what model of amp it was, I was about 18 and barely a beginner but my band (Blues Brothers copy) opened for a local rock band. They let us use their gear. I plugged my crappy SG (Basically a Melody Maker) straight into the Marshall and turned it up without touching any knobs other than volume. Whatever that amp had at the time was IT for me. It would be totally impractical, but I still sometimes fantasize about finding a vintage Marshall half-stack.

Fender is still killing by making reissues of all their classic amps, including digital versions! Marshall hit a homerun with the 20-watt reissue stuff, imo, but they need to stay in that wheelhouse. They need to maybe vary the wattage options a little? I also know and understand the Fender amp lineup way better than Marshall. I grew up with Fender amps. I would love a 20-watt studio vintage, the plexi super lead reissue, but Marshall is backordered, and the combo only comes with a 10" speaker, which bums me out. But Marshall might look at what Fender is doing because it's working for them.

A bridge tele tone is probably my least favorite tone on the planet. To each their own. My favorite tele is a Peavey Generation series S2.

A copyright or trademark is useless if the holder doesn't defend it. I'm not siding with Gibson but, copyrights do protect the holder's investment and work. Regarding Marshall , they do seem to be intent on following Peavey into the abyss.

Yeah, weird how Gibson never seems to defend it against Chinese companies. Maybe because they aren't big or bad enough to, financially. Ain't that a bitch!

Marshall should be trying to find a way to make affordable amps using analog solid state technology that look, feel, and sound like their classic amps with some modern updates like master volumes, boosts, more powerful EQ’s, cab-emulated DIs and IR loaders, USB recording connectivity, etc. make a line that’s between $500 and $1,200 USD and they’d sell out instantly.

Yeah, but in the real world, they set a ridiculous premium on such features as "analog" and "tube" and "power". The market sets an average price range for those premium features and charge that until people start picketing the company on the internet and threatening to burn down the factory. Then they drop that price by ±25%. Then, for a fiscal year they will gradually raise THAT price usually in smaller increments until people start picketing the company on the internet and threatening to burn down the factory. Then they drop that price by ±10-15%. Then, for a fiscal year they will gradually raise THAT price usually in smaller increments until people start picketing the company on the internet and threatening to burn down the factory. Rinse and repeat. Marshall has no incentive to make a cheap all analog tube amp with more than a few rudimentary features and is bigger than a low wattage bedroom amp.

As far as buying an acoustic guitar online- I had a fantastic experience with Penny Lane Emporium in Ft Lauderdale, FL. I bought an Eastman, and was able to negotiate the price down. They went and took pics of the guitar for me so I got the top I wanted. They also set it up specifically how I wanted at no extra charge. Guitar showed up to me in two days. Tough to beat all that.

Re: Marshall. In my opinion modellers do really well copying clean Fender Amps and high distortion amps, but that Marshall blues rock ‘natural overdrive’ sound is definitely not there yet. Maybe it’s because there’s an element of them being unpredictable, unreliable and unwieldy that can’t be properly replicated. I guess the question is do today’s kids playing jangly afrobeat indie, 3rd Gen emo, or glum cod folk want an amp that makes them sound like Paul Kosoff?

Hey Phill, long time listener, first time caller lol. I’ve found the D’addario NYXL and Ernie Ball Paradigm strings to be well worth the money. I use both on different guitars, though I prefer the tone of the Ernie Balls a little more. They also have less string tension. For me they last indefinitely as long as I take care of them and have never broken either type. Ever. I feel they are definitely worth the money. I play 80s/90s thrash and death metal and early hardcore punk. I have purposefully abused these strings to test them. Just make sure you keep your string path burr free and you stretch them properly.
