You need to be straight to the point. If someone contacts me, I say what do you want? I ask the questions to get to the point within 5 minutes, I can then make my mind up there and then. I'm not one for getting my time wasted on someone else's dreams. You were way too polite.

I totally hear ya! I constantly get hit up by "models" (or any non-photog) to shoot them. I ask myself "what's in it for me"? As a photographer, the "model" is getting all the benefit if there's nothing for you to gain.

I can definitely relate to this story. I've had rappers contact me to shoot their lifestyles and branding content for exposure. I've even had OF ppl contact me to shoot their videos for exposure. They always get upset when you turn it down and try to show you how bad of a decision you're making 🤦🏽♂️.

Long story short: had a pastor hit me up Saturday about doing a shoot at the airport for his church guest at 2pm but also wanted me to come to church that night from 6pm to 11pm to cover that event. When I hit him with the 2 event price, he said "I'll call you back tomorrow ".... ......i guess tomorrow ain't coming 🤷🏾♂️. I'm not one of his members and your title carries no weight here. When people don't respect what you do, they want you respect what they do to do it for a discount/free. .........Standard Rates Apply to all
@RyanTroy8 ай бұрын
I agree! I went through the same thing with a church event. and i gave a discount because he made it seem like they didnt have much money and i felt i was doing the right thing.. so my plan was.. I made these quick business cards at Office Depot with a QR Code of the gallery and i would sell the downloaded images on it to recoup some of the money back. but when i got there they didnt want me to hand out cards because they were charging people to take photos in front of this wall with the event name on it. 5 dollars a photo which they would bring to the church in two weeks.. they made sooooo much money.. these church folks don't be playing!

I feel you man. Same here, I couple of months ago a lady wanted me to do portraits twice a month for freakin $80 each, oh, and I would have had to take like 3 trains to get to her... smh.. people out here are diabolical, just trying to take advantage of people.... I declined, and with all of this, I learned a few lessons, #1 stop being Mr. Nice Guy, #2 don't lower your price for almost anyone, and #3 charge a commuting fee. It is tough out here but like you said, stick to your guns, and only do jobs that benefit you, if they don't like your conditions or your prices, let them go.

Your first mistake: and I mean your ABSOLUTE FIRST mistake was not asking her to send a comprehensive EMAIL about what she wants and what are the benefits gained by both her and you. NEVER pick up the phone unless you’ve gone past that stage. You’ll weed out a lot by getting people to write out everything upfront. She was trying to scam you so she needed you on that line to finesse you into doing something that doesn’t benefit you.

@@RyanTroy It saves you a lot of wasted time that you'll never get back. Professionals will always have a clear goal that they can email over to you. It also serves as a record should there be any miscommunications later on down the pipeline. If someone reaches out to you in the future to collaborate, just as them to send a short email with the top-level details of the proposed relationship. You can always call after the fact to tweak the finer points once you agree with what you've read.
