I've been struggling with lengthening my swing. These tips on maintaining the grip with your lead hand are just what I needed. Between this and the video on "Every Golfer makes EXACTLY the same Downswing Mistake" has made my practice much more rewarding. Thanks so much!

Wow this is a great tip for golfers with right arm dominant swings. I try so hard to keep my right arm almost not on the golf club cause I try to swing so hard with the right arm but putting pressure on the left thumb is a great feel to help from my right arm taking the golf club over and coming over the top. “Dropping” the arms never worked for me or keeping back towards the target but that simple tip has helped more than anything. I also felt like I would lose the golf club trying so hard to get to parallel on the down swing this makes it ten times easier.

Happy Holidays to you and your family, Russell. I like the cutaway closeups you included in this video. They help to clarify the points you are making.

Just that one single thing you mentioned about the right arm actively working to essentially close the gap between the elbows as much as possible is so important and not ever really talked about. Golf has so much "feel" involved that is hard to cover all of those things. I've actively been working to keep my elbows a lot closer and I've been hitting far crisper shots.

good content. I know the long drive guys grip it pretty tight & the pga tour guys are 6-7+ on average, but I think you have to take into account the speed and torque they create. Also, a 6 from Bryson might be a 10 for me. I used to be very loose in my grip and decided to try a firm grip and it changed my game. I think you're dead on as far as a solid connection.

Ok he kind of went into everything beyond the grip there., so I'll re-focus: There is ONE TACTILE way for the instructor to teach grip pressure specifically: As the student grips the club, the instructor takes the club head, and gently turns it back and forth. The students grip pressure is wrong if: 1) the club turns in the students hands while doing this, OR 2) the student clenches the grip so the instructor can't turn the club at all, THEREFORE THE CORRECT grip pressure FOR THAT STUDENT is when the club does not turn in the student's hands as the instructor turns the club head , but the hands follow the movement of the instructor because the student's fluid wrists allow it. FINALLY: A) Good Point about the pushing out action of the trailing arm, this pressure also maintains the grip. But the important point here is that by setting up at address with the lead shoulder higher, the trailing arm length is shorter, so that there can be slight extension down the club from the right side to maintain radius right from the beginning of the swing, through the whole backswing until the impact interval. B) The instructor only mentions "Pivot" once. He would do well to use his pivot to support the club IN ANY SORT OF SWINGING MOTION instead of letting his arms swing the club haphazardly. The club must be supported by the pivot throughout the whole swing, not doing so only breeds bad habits like club head throwaway. That should all help to clarify things.

It should also be noted that your trail arm as you contact the ball should be slightly bent, despite the fact that you're using it to "push" the club downwards. You don't want to release your trail arm angle too early is my point.

Tight fingers far far far better than this idiotic light grip stupidity (see Shawn Clement wisdom in golf on grip eye opening to say the least )

Light pressure for me is key to playing well and releasing the club head. The moment I let my trigger finger and thumb get too tight, I get tension in my forearms. I apply pressure on my left thumb with the base of my right thumb and kind of takes care of itself.

@@leytonjones8138 This is a concept that I came across from Bernie Najar with some level of success. I think in the end we just have to find what works for us individually.
