Epistemology is plagued by presupposing what it ought to demonstrate. To say, for instance, that belief stands in a causal relationship with my environment already presupposes a mechanism of belief formation that cannot be verified by the believer. I think it is fair to say that the ordinary-language semantics of believe are such that believe stands in relationship to something outside the believer, but one should still drop the causal claim, because the semantics is all about intention.
