I've been clean for 4 years. Thursday my son and his gf went for an ultrasound to find out the gender of their baby. She was 5 months pregnant. They Couldnt find a heartbeat. She delivered our sleeping angel friday, a boy they named Sterling Shane, the same day this song dropped. I needed this song. I have never wanted to numb so bad. I listened to this song like 10 times. Feeling the pain in life us the hardest part of sobriety. This song came at a time when my faith was shaken so bad. This song is gonna touch alot of lives. Same here, I have very few friends left. I just lost another friend to suicide last week. Many from overdosing. My fiance from brain cancer, my adopted son from a car accident. I can't even count the amount of friends that I lost but the ones I still have I can count on 1 hand. When the funeral home employee knows you by your first name thats not something that I pictured for my life when I was a kid. The loved ones who are left to pick up the pieces of our shattered hearts are suffering just as much if not far more. I would rather have someone come to me for help, I'd do anything to help them so I don't lose them. Let everyone you know how much they mean to you as often as possible. Many times people feel alone and that no one would even care if they were gone. Reach out to them if they don't want to come to you, many times they feel like they are a burden or are too ashamed or embarrassed to ask for help. We should show much more love for one another. We all need each other to make it through this crazy world we live in. Much love to you all!

Thank you for pointing out how Evan layered in the deeper voice at that hard-hitting part of the first verse. I always wondered why that part seemed to send a shiver through my soul. Once you pointed it out, it gave me an eerie feeling as if a powerful deity was chiming in and singing along at that point. Your explanations about cadence and layering in your reactions make me gain a greater appreciation for the artistry that's taking place. The tone of Brandon's voice in this song is absolutely beautiful. His deeper, gruffer voice gives a reminder that no matter how tough we think someone might be, each of us has vulnerabilities that we hide and struggle with. Nova's voice mixed in with the men's voices during the choruses gives them a church choir feel to them. I think that effect is why Tom and Brandon asked her to be a part of the song, and it was a great artistic idea.

I'd like to share a perspective from another commenter, with his permission. It just sound true. I just wanted to share my perspective to you on this song. Tom quit everything 4-5 years ago and hasn't relapsed but it's been difficult. I think this is the song he would have written if he had the words those years ago. So he's relating with people from ground zero. That's where it starts, and these are the emotions he felt when he quit. He's trying to help others take that first step without glossing over the gritty details, details that will always feel fresh to him as a recovering addict. Your brain holds on to it all forever to remind you why not to relapse again.

I had never heard of you before tonight and I’m so stoked that because of this video I was able to listen to some of your music, and you’re super talented. I had to comment about this song though... When I heard “Church” I was SO beyond moved I HAD to search for a reaction video just to see if anyone else found it to be as hard hitting & as powerful as I did, It appears I was right!! It’s like I’ve lived his words. Never with alcohol, but a drug is a drug is a drug it’s all the same.. The pain, the insanity, the complete loss of self, the inability to care about ANYTHING other than yourself, the loss of confidence, the feeling that NOBODY could possibly understand, the pushing everyone away, the guilt & shame, believing that you’re in too deep & there’s no hope. To feel SO far gone that it’s beyond any humanity, that final cry out to God to help you before it’s too late.. Until a few days ago I had never heard of Tom McDonald either & I find it hard to believe I’ve lived my life up until now without this song being a part of it. Addiction in our society is still somehow so taboo & the truly heartbreaking part of that fact is, especially in our generation people ARE dropping like flies... Massive amounts of people everyday & people still don’t address it directly. I don’t quite know why BUT until now I’ve yet to hear a song EVER about addiction that sounded authentic & hit home, like the person who’s singing/rapping it was actually going through these things themselves & the song wasn’t written for them. THIS IS THAT SONG, that true, broken-hearted truth that is addiction and living in it. I foresee this song BLOWING UP & changing lives... Not in the way of “aww that song changed my life” because that’s just something people say, but no it REALLY changing peoples lives.. It’s been on repeat over here turned all the way up! #SOMOVED #MindBlown

Knox man, this is such a great breakdown. I am 9 years clean this March, the cycle of addiction is the worst thing I’ve ever walked through in my life. It is the loneliest, the scariest, place I’ve ever been, you are so powerless to control the next moment of your life and when you become aware it’s overwhelming. It was only Christ saving me that brought me out and healed me. By the grace of God, I haven’t relapsed once since being saved. When before I couldn’t help but relapse, you are right it’s not a quick fix, it’s not a genie in a bottle. It’s a surrender, trust, and follow. Tom is right we don’t have the strength, it was Christ alone that gave me the strength I needed. I appreciate you man, thank you for the awesome breakdown.

I love the time you take to put lyrics into perspective. It takes a true artist to do what you do man. Much love and respect!

As someone who drinks every day for the last 10+ years, I hear this song. I know I need to stop that shit but I just can't seeing myself falling asleep sober.

Have some faith in you... You can do it... ( I know I don't know what I m talking about I m just a kid, never much into drug... But only took me one night to realise the addictive power of alcool even more when u r in a tough spot...) I don't know what u are dealing with but baby step try cause if u try long enough one day it'll become natural 😉 have the best of life y'all out there.. Time is limited but don't look at the timer too much.. Excess is most of time not a good thing... Youre gonna make it if you want... If you don't... don't feel oppress to change.. Ur life is urs no one else

Life is up to you on how you want to spend it but life is short on the amount that you can spend before the funds run out. Ultimately it's your choice on how you want to travel down life's winding road, may you be happy with whatever choice you decide to make. It's going to be a fk'ed-up rocky road no matter which path you choose. Good Luck and before you ask, yes I've been sober for 20+ years...

I truly believe you can , one night at a time one day at a time maybe even from seconds to second or minute by minute one step at a time ever step shows you you can even when you feel like you can't. We really have to encourage our selves. You got this.
@sweetkissez643 жыл бұрын
You have already made progress by saying you need to stop. Figure out what will work for you. You got this! I have faith that you can overcome your struggle with alcohol. Good luck, friend!

Nova didn't have the addictions that Tom had just like the song Sober she has said that she doesn't think it's fair to have her own part because she hasn't gone through it

Nova used to be drunk by noon everyday. I don't know why exactly she doesn't have a verse, but it really gave Brandon a chance to shine.

@@Kadra_Sky I went through a time when I was getting drunk and high every day, and then I grew up and stopped. It wasn't really a big deal. I think true addiction is very different then a phase, for lack of a better term. I know that if I called myself an addict because of my past alcohol and drug abuse it would feel completely fake, especially after hearing Tom talk and sing about it. Just my thought on it.

@@Kadra_Sky maybe to her, that wasn't a real addiction.

But her part in the chorus, to me, seems like it's her praying for and wanting to help them

I'm gonna be honest, I thought this was good at first when I listen to it 5 days ago. I looked up the lyrics just now, and I felt the weight of every word. Because besides the drinking, I felt everything that he talks about.

I really appreciate your break downs, especially when I think I already have a great interpretation of a song. You come in and point out those details that get lost or under appreciated. I can tell you really love the music and have a genuine respect for it and the artist because you are one yourself. Respect
