I remember reaching the top row of the map for the first time, looking up through the water, and thinking back to Within a Deep Forest.... "So this is why he did it."

@@luciano8158 In the opening cutscene for Within a Deep Forest, it's explained that in the future, the world is in ruins. So a scientist named Dr. Cliche created a bomb to freeze the world and prevent that future from coming to pass. However, you stop the bomb from going off in the game. Now in Knytt Underground, when you reach the surface, you can see that all the water is covered in toxic sludge, meaning that the future that Dr. Cliche had dreaded so much, has ended up happening anyways. That is why all the Knytt live underground now.

@@luciano8158 oh whoops idk if you'll see this reply but the plot of Within a Deep Forest, at least what plot there is, is that the mad scientist doctor Cliché, living in the aftermath of an apocalyptic war, decides to "fix" history by sending a bomb back in time to destroy civilization in one fell swoop rather than over decades of suffering. You stop the bomb in the end, of course, and Knytt Underground takes place hundreds of years later, with life on the surface a distant memory due to radioactive fallout. Revisiting Cliché's abandoned lab in Knytt Underground is the closest you get to seeing the extent of the devastation on the surface, with this calm music playing as you peer out at the wreckage scattering the water surface and seafloor for miles.
