Going to line the drawers and add either a short piece of chain, or hinge to keep the lid in place. I also intend to add small handles to both the top box and 3 drawer add on to each end of both boxes. If I can figure out how to remove the drawers I want to repaint the whole works, cases likely hammertone gray and drawers Craftsman red, or chevy orange. To the back of each drawer where the drawers meet the inside of the case I want to apply self adhesive strip magnets too. If I get real carried away, I might add a piano hinge to the leading edge of the lid and add a front fold down cover with a handle like big boxes come with. Perhaps even use stainless for that.

@@herbholmberg4474 wow sounds like a great plan. I would like to see a picture of the finished product. Can't wait to hear how it goes.

I just found a KZbin video where a guy showed how to remove the drawers. Turns out you remove them the same way you do to remove drawers from old friction slide toolboxes from back in the day. In looking at the lid of the box, I think the easiest way to add a chain stop will be to add thin blocks of steel (keystock from the hdw store) I have not yet measured, but looks like 1/2" keystock strips to underside of lid under the lip of the lid, and matching spot in the bottom of the top till (I will do left side (traditional location on old machinist top boxes) likely just epoxy the strips of steel in place) then drill crosswise through the case and attach each end of the chain with pop rivets (small diameter) after epoxying the strips in I will paint the strips and case as one, the rivet the chain in place afterwards leaving them in their natural zink coat. May first attach all handles and paint as one with the case. (I will figure that out when I get to that point. I am on the fence regarding adding a front fold down cover, may or may not add one of those. May use stainless for a cover and leave bare, or use mild steel and paint the piano hinge and cover along with the rest of the outside as one which would appear more like it came that way when new. I will need very small (thin) piano hinge) the addition of the cover will be dictated by what I can find for the hinge. If I can only find disperportionally sized hinges I won't add a cover because they would stick out Like a sore thumb and destroy the factory made look I will be going after.

If one wished to make these locking boxes that could be easily accomplished by taking a long aircraft drill bit (commonly most of a foot long) and with the lid open and drawers closed drill a hole (1/4") would do through the floor of the top till and through both drawer bottoms and drop a like sized length of steel round stock through leaving 1/2-1" of the rod sticking up from the floor of the top till. Then, mount a small lock hasp to an end of the box for a small lock. I have no such need, but it would be easily accomplished. Mount lock hasp with pop rivets discouraging entry without damaging the box by a screwdriver.

Before I paint the drawers, I will either remove or tape over the aluminum drawer pulls, too.

The liners were a good idea. I'll need to do that. What I did was I put Loctite Mounting Putty (poster putty) on each of the four corners of mine, balled the putty up and then stretched it flat, so when I go to get something from across the desk, it won't budge. And it won't slide around, marking up my desk. I think it's a really good semi-permanent solution that won't mark mess up your office desk.
