Showcased is one of Kobe’s classic isolation looks, elevating from a stationary position beyond the three point line. Without any dribbles, he resorted to subtle jabs and feints, utilizing the bare minimum of shot-creating movements.
Notice how he kept the ball protected. If the defender was playing his right, Kobe tucked the ball deep into his left hip. With defenders sitting on his left, he tucked it right hip, or so often utilized that delayed swing through, almost dragging the ball on the floor in the process to avoid swiping hands.
With it that low, the powerful upward swing/drive of his arms generated the necessary momentum and consequential lift for him to shoot a fadeaway 25-footer with somebody trying to stop him from doing just that. Even the slightest bit of space was enough. If Kobe could 1 - elevate, and 2 - see the rim, all was complete. By then, lazering that spalding was the only task left. It never mattered how close his defenders were or how much they tried to disrupt the release. Whenever, from wherever, on whoever, a bucket was possible.

Kobe's threes are just too cold, man. Right in your face. Defenders on him, it doesn't matter where your hand is, Kobe is going around it and can get a clean look! Not sure anyone's better 1on1.

The no dribble is probably my most favourite part about this video, we could talk about the difficulty, range, etc. but the fact that he doesn't even dribble is so beautiful. The ability to create space without dribbling, from three? RIP my man

Well said and agreed. That’s gotta be some of the “fear” these guys had guarding him. Knowing that it didn’t matter how close you were, what spot on the floor, dude didn’t even need to dribble, just straight elevate and sniper it in

So crazy to think about, like you literally never see this anymore in the NBA. Someone just biding their time and waiting for the perfect moment to just rise up over someone. Pure confidence

Yup. Those wide stance threes (from a standstill) require a considerable amount of strength to be hoisted with accuracy. Kobe’s strength, though it was never on the level of a LeBron or Jordan, is underrated.

0:16-0:21 Pure Jordan! From the scissor feet, to the one-hand ball maneuver, to the shot mechanics. I can only imagine the countless hours he put into studying that man’s game. A true basketball savant who possessed perhaps the most skilled all-around scoring repertoire that I’ve ever seen.

Great job on this, dom, especially the description! I've always been focused on the theater of these plays from Kobe. How he'd stare down his defender, keeping them on edge for whatever he was about to do. Then, he'd just rise up and shoot over them, with each made three seeming like a strong punch or even a gunshot. But you description shifted my attention to the nuances of Kobe's approach in these situations. Your attention to detail is top-notch man, kudos.
@dcshow
@dcshow 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for the $ contribution dude, means alot. I like the “theater” aspect you mentioned. I think this shot might be most appropriate for the “assassin” label as he just sat back, kinda calm, waited to simply elevate and line drive 3 points in somebody’s face. And glad to hear about my description, you’re one i know always reads them 👌

This is something that even Steph curry doesn’t do. I won’t say he “can’t” but he doesn’t. Mainly cause Kobe elevates and shoots over people. Versus Steph needs space to shoot so he has to do a quick dribble or go around a screen or shoot far away
@Mpc333k
@Mpc333k 5 ай бұрын
Nah, you can say it - Curry can’t do this. No one can. And the reason why is because pretty much any shooter in today’s run and gun heavy NBA has been trained to let go of the shot quickly. Notice that Curry barely has any elevation on his jumper. His release is lightning quick, so it works really well in rhythm. But if he tried a face up standstill fadeaway from beyond the arc against an opponent as tall or taller than him, he would probably get his shot blocked. Kobe modeled his jumpshot after Jordan’s, and like MJ he gets an absurd amount of elevation on his fadeaway. By the time the defender realizes it, Kobe is too high up in the air for him to do anything about it. The physical strength, skill level, and mental fortitude this type of shot requires to be made consistently… we’ll prolly never see anything like it again.

The next possession he ruptured the tendon, but I think he actually tore it earlier in the game when he penetrated and came off limping badly. He kept playing, single handedly pulled out a game they had no business winning, completely severed his tendon, hit two clutch free throws and finally waived the white flag. Heart just can't be counted with stats.
