When Magic was diagnosed with HIV, most everyone at the time, thought it was a fatal disease that afflicted gay men. It took a long time for people to understand (medical researchers too) how HIV is contracted. I can't imagine how painful it was to Magic that his closest friends/teammates wouldn't go near him. As a nurse, I took care of patients that wouldn't even tell their spouses/partners for fear of losing them. He was the first public persona that not just survived, but did so in such a robust way. He gave hope to a lot of people with HIV or AIDS.

By the time magic Johnson card HIV nobody thought it was just a gay disease and secondly it was a fatal disease unless you were Rich SOB like him add magic Johnson just been some normal dude out in the streets he'd be dead today😊... And let's not believe in the propaganda the vast majority of people that suffer with HIV and who have died from HIV are homosexual that vast percentage. Early in the 80s people got it through blood transfusions it has not been the case since the 80s. The other small percentage that takes up the largest number out of the rest would be intravenous drug users less than 1% of people that have HIV are heterosexual and do not use drugs. And they tend to be very very promiscuous like magic was

More and more I find Hercules and his 12 labors to be the perfect equivalent to Bird. He just doesn’t quit and somehow overcomes no matter the struggle so many damn times he is akin to a mythological figure Lmao. And i share a birthday with mj February 17 and live near Chicago so I’ve always had him in my highest regards, but bird is my goat, I just gotta give him his props and respect 🫡.

Younger people won't understand the HIV thing. AIDS wasn't even a concept until 1981, even though a few people had died from it. 1991 Magic was diagnosed with HIV and Freddie Mercury died from it. There was major panic back then and I am sure Isaiah Thomas was thinking that Magic had a secret life somehow. What astounded me was that Bird didn't back away.

@@BU_TV Bird was a genuinely brave man. He and Magic diffused racism together. Then, they diffused HIV together. Even though they talk about Magic going through rejection, Magic is the beginning of the change of attitude about HIV and as far as racism went, Bird, as a young person was playing basketball with black people and Magic was sent to a mostly white school. They were the perfect duo to change the conversation about race and HIV. Even though we are back to hard race issues, they were both so powerful back then that the issue briefly disappeared from the mainstream. I will tell you that in my own family I have 5 people who did inter-racial marriage and pre-Bird/Magic I heard racial slurs from both directions but I have not heard one in my family since those years. Not one.

I watched the college championship game. I followed the Magic, Bird rivalry from their rookie year until both retired. I was a Laker fan. But I was a Bird fan. I always rooted for the Lakers, over the Celtics. But I always found myself rooting for Bird, when he wasn't playing the Laker. My fondness NBA memories are of the games played by the Lakers vs the Celtics. Magic, Bird and I were born within months of each other. Magic and Bird, Bird and Magic, the greatest rivalry(in my opinion) in sports. I am very happy both of them have found friendship with each other, after all the battles between them. We should all learn something from these two wonderful men.

They made the sport so exciting again. I agree with you about being a fan of both. Myself a Celtics fan and a Magic fan. Larry said when Magic said he wouldn't be playing anymore that he didn't want to play after that. Their friendship is a special one and a great story.

The HIV talk caused me to tear up. I remember crying when the announcement about Magic came out. Back then, AIDS was a death sentence. So many people were dying and it wasn't well understood either. People were confused about Magic getting it because he wasn't gay or a drug user or getting blood transfusions. His getting it caused people to not trust even how it was spread.

@@BU_TV Yeah, I cannot imagine that. So many people in theater and fashion and people like Rock Hudson had died and Freddie Mercury dying... but Magic is such a positive person... he kept calm. His wife stayed with him. I can't even imagine she didn't have the same questions Isaiah had but the difference would be that she went to him and talked it through. Isaiah went to other people. But the whole world was genuinely terrified that year.

@@BU_TV From 1993 on, almost all of the information on AIDS had switched to positive. Movies like Philadelphia and plays like Angels in America came out. But I distinctly remember that 1991, people were so afraid that they were cruel about it. 1992 the conversation switched and 1993 the culture switched and the amazing part was that in 1994 AIDS was the leading cause of death of all Americans 25-44. It is amazing that the culture changed before successful treatment. Magic being the nicest guy in the universe helped.

Magic was extremely fortunate to have found the right medication when he did! It helped keep the disease from advancing from HIV to AIDS. Even today there are those that don't respond as well to the medication. Even though they practically perfected the right combination ....It's still a problem for some ...sadly.

I had jealousy issues as a young person but not as an adult. I have only watched a few of bird's college highlights. It's hard to understand a jealousy of Bird because it seemed like he's always been a team player and never had a problem with sharing the ball. He was a great player and so many of them are so arrogant they don't share as many opportunities with their teammates. Looks to me like Bird was about putting numbers on the board.

Everybody talks about the left handed shots that Larry could make. Watch him sign an autograph sometime. Like a lot of people of our generation, a natural left hander that teachers, coaches, and peers, intentionally or not, force them to do things right handed. The man is truly ambidextrous.

Don’t get someone like MJ probably let loose because THAT GENERATION DESERVES RESPECT SO I HONESTLY think what goes to JUST PROVE WO WORDS is the newer Eastern Division “MVP trophy” ‘NUFF SAID WO WORDS) and yes meant to spell it wrong lol. BUT LET JJ EXPLAIN WHY IF BIRD WASN’T “all that” was HE THE ONE THEY NAMED the trophy after, WHO STARTED the 40/50/90 CLUB and WHO WHEN THEY COULD BARELY MOVE WAS OFFERED the spot & #3 call FOR THE DREAM TEAM & why HE was #3........ then Co-Captain......and did all he did STILL AND I PLAYED HARD in sports and extremely hurt from all that PLUS horses and 1 EXTREMELY BAD (should be dead car accident) the 2 more right after 1 that totaled a NICE SUV (and had it been another ride I probably would be worse off because the “comfort & safety” well and Good Lord above still wasn’t ready for me) THEN FOLLOWING THAT 1 ANOTHER FAIRLY BAD (to an untrained eye and no “background story” kinda like with Larry about his hand and JUST HOW BAD his back and feet REALLY WERE minus the head MULTIPLE TIMES and how bad and the ones like everyone says either “know about, go read, or watch ALL the games before commenting!!!!!!!!! BUT MY last accident has been like a nail in the coffin to me and I still don’t think it equals Larry BUT IS how did he word it at the end “never know when he might be paralyzed or not” BECAUSE I’m just getting started with surgeries unfortunately (was trying to push until no options) BUT MEDICAL ADVANCEMENTS EVEN SINCE my 1st “death accident 8/8/2009” ( I was being pronounced dead and got a pulse......I’m a 1st Responder and TRUST ME I SHOULD NOT BE TYPING THIS!!!!!!! ALL THAT TO SAY LARRY DID 90% HURT NAD WHEN AS WE KNOW The “Achilles injury on Kobe” really did him in. But the combo of feet, back, and head “Puss In Boots” “fancy pants” I dare to say to Bird’s face with Magic or one of those guys and see if Bird doesn’t say “let’s go AS IS IN SUITS (because he did JUST THAT EXACT THING FOR FUN LET ME FIND THE INTERVIEW..........hold on) and Challenge JJ TO A 3 point contest in suits no warm ups even.....hold on let me find the “1 witness of many but said in an interview”......where he did JUST THAT FOR FUN OR JUST CAUSE...) kzbin.infocWHlK0mpGQo?feature=share and there is 1 more let me find it JUST SAW.....BUT ALMOST THE SAME ......SOMEONE said they think it’s “the SAME EVENT” but I kinda don’t think so BECAUSE OF the #s and I KNOW Larry........and it was like that from Day 1 to now.......he has SO MANY that UNLESS you drop videos or clips or extra specifics......A lot “SOUND” the same or Alike or close but not because he has just entirely too many EVEN NOW. There's a video out there ( I haven't been able to re-find it). That as the teams are leaving the court at the end Bird is carrying one of his shoes. I've wondered 🤔 could this might been a game prior to the day he decided to let the doctor look at it his foot. Or just a coincidence. It couldn't have been the game he played after because Bird wouldn't have let people see his foot bloody. 🤷🏻‍♀️ It was odd to see Bird carrying his shoe right after a game.
