The blue colour is a white balance issue. It's a daylight film with a white balance of around 5500k. You were likely shooting in light of 6500 or more. I use a colour light meter to measure the light colour when shooting slide film. I carry warming filters to correct for this high colour temperature days. I carry an 81A 81C at a minimum but I often carry KR series filters as well and I often use a KR3 and it does solve this issue.

Love your videos! The shots turned out beautiful. I am yet to shoot any slide film, but when you showed the box of Ektar 100 I had to laugh. My first experience with Ektar was a bad one. I shot it in the middle of the day with no clouds and it looked terrible. I was sad, but at the same time, I learned a valuable lesson. Even though it's a color negative film, it did not like those conditions 😂. Can't wait to try some slide film.

Slide film has always been expensive even back in the day. and I've been shooting since 1970. Slides are just beautiful when you hit the exposure just right. Kodachrome was the king and very archival too. I have slides my father took in the early 1950's that look fantastic even today. I've always set my meter to underexpose by 1/3 stop and then I adjust from there. E100 really loves the blues in water and the sky and when it was available Fuji Velvia did fantastic things with greens in nature.

If I can find some Fujichrome, I'd love to try it. When I shot with Fuji 400 Pro, I love the green it renders, wondering how Fujichrome would look like~

@@itscapturedbysam If memeory serves me there was Fujichrome but the ones I've used were Velvia 50 and Provia 100. Velvia is no longer available in the states. Something to due with the chemicals in it but Provia is still available. I have 3 rolls of exposed Velvia in my freezer that I will have to develop myself. I just haven't worked up the courage to get an E6 kit. More steps than B/W or even C41 and I think temp control is even more important with E6

I was wondering about this film. It used to be the number 1 go-to for the photographers we used to book for advertising shoots in the 90s. The look really reminds me of the medium format transparencies we used to to get from them. And don’t worry about the slow videos. We’re definitely getting quality over quantity 👍🏻😊

Back in the day when I was an active hobbyist my go to 35mm films were Kodachrome and Fujichrome. When I wanted the best sharpness, archival stability, and super accurate color It was Kodachrome. When I wanted somewhat exaggerated color saturation (esp. in blues and green) I grabbed the Fuji. Ektachrome was sort of an affordable compromise. There is good reason why Paul Simon sang "don't take my Kodachrome away". I used mostly K64 and K25 but even K400 gave really good results. Something is wrong with process on your shots. Even Ektachrome was never that bad with color rendition.

Thanks for reviewing Ektachrome Sam! I have several rolls in my fridge and like you I have been afraid to shoot it. Your video has now inspired me to just go out and shoot it now since I now have a better Idea on it's limitations. I guess it works better in even lighting and be careful not to lose all your shadows.

Hey Sam! I think your rolls look too blue mainly because slide film is meant to be projected with a tungsten light, which are very warm. Looking at it with a neutral light makes it look very blue because of the lack of compensation. Also Ektachrome is a little blue too 😂
@itscapturedbysam
@itscapturedbysam Жыл бұрын
Ahhhh… interesting!! I never thought of that!! That make sense!! I think when the exposure is right, it doesn’t look bad, really it’s when I under exposed too much, made it more blue~~~
@janulmann3232
@janulmann3232 Жыл бұрын
I don't necessarily think that that's a bad thing, it's just a characteristic of this film stock. Cinestill 800t is also balanced for tungsten lights, but you don't correct the blue tint afterwards because it's just the characteristic of this film stock. The same goes for kodak gold which leans a lot towards the warmer tones.
@javixo1997
@javixo1997 Жыл бұрын
@@janulmann3232 I am not sure you understood my point correctly, I’ll try to clarify a little more. Ektachrome is in fact balanced for *shooting* in daylight, but when you put it in a projector there should be a tungsten bulb inside for it to look *balanced*, they used tungsten bulbs because that’s what they had when they designed slide film back then. The film has to be a little blue to compensate for the warm light coming out of the projector. Tungsten balanced film is another whole different thing, it’s meant to be shot under tungsten light for it to *look balanced* when printed or projected in normal conditions. If you want your film to look blue, there’s nothing wrong with it, it’s an artistic choice. However, if you want your film to look balanced, there you have the explanation I made
@back40canoe
@back40canoe Жыл бұрын
They should look just fine on a light table. A daylight warming filter is needed to correct for the white balance of the day which is what is going on here.
