I’ve had hit and miss results with Ektar. It is definitely a film that shines in the perfect situation. I think everyone should give it a go at some stage to get to know it’s characteristics.

Well put. I think Ektar can look stunning in the right circumstances. I stick a roll in one of my many rangefinders and save it for hikes. It looks especially beautiful in Autumn. It nails the oranges, reds and browns like no other film; even better than slide film, in my opinion

Really makes a difference where you get Ektar scanned I reckon. I've only shot 1 roll but I found these scans of yours way less saturated. Crazy how much of a difference it makes!

Such a difference! It all depends on the lab techs choices!

Ektar is the Velvia 50 of colour negative film. And just like Velvia, it is great if your subject profits from saturated colours. Landscape, architecture (some styles)... and drinks/food. And just like Velvia, you would rather not use it for portraits. At least not for "beauty" shots. (Could maybe work for sun-burnt endurance athletes like cyclists or rowers...)

bad skin tones with Ektar is almost entirely poor scanning/inversion. The default settings labs use for consumer films and portra tend to add more red into ektar pictures than ektar actually has. From ektar's data sheet, you can see that blues are most saturated and reds are least saturated.

I have a completely different experience with ektar. Find it to be quite versatile and I’d say, the scanning method will change things a lot. It was even more versatile in an RA4 darkroom, but that brought me to the conclusion also… that C41 films are an arbitrary process that can be manipulated a lot in terms of saturation and color tonality, based on how you filtered & processed your prints. Portra is the film that I’d say lacks versatility. You can always remove saturation, but cannot add it without things getting wonky. Ektar is my second favorite, next to E100. Portra is one I won’t touch.

Do you use any filters with E100? Ektar is my favorite and E100 is my second favorite. I'm looking to use it more, I just need to nail more of my shots with it.

@@samwestenskow Yes. The number one filter that I use for most scenes is an 812 filter. Also have been using an 80B to render daylight as blue and then add tungsten balanced light to have interesting scenes.

How dies the Ektar reacts to high saturated colours of flowers? Red roses, red poppy flowers or yellow and magenta flowers.

Goes to the effort to Shoot film, complains how you can't edit ektar heavily lol. The point seems to have been missed. Pick the stock, and show what the analog stock gets. Use different scanners sure but leave the heavy editing for digital photography

Thanks for the upload. But why making these super boring pictures with this expensive film? Trees and a bridge and then more trees, then more trees, and then a bridge... I don't get it. What's wrong with some variety? This film deserves that. Deserves beter.

Ive shot Ektar for years, including people in them. Its a great film for my tastes but I agree its red/warm in certain lighting and skin tones. At least we have the option to shoot it and thats always good. Cheers!
