Very good good work Ray. I'm glad you are still at it, you have so much to give to this crazy world. I'm the guy who jived you about crashing a skateboard a few months ago. I've been quite sick and out of touch with the world so I wanted to look you up and wish you a joyous Martin Luther King Day. I got thrown out of the house after constant clashes with my southern racist father about MLK and the Civil Rights movement of the 60s. I've lived my entire life in Whiteland; Wisconsin dairy farming, then small-town journalism. Ray, I fear this sounds rather silly, but you're the only Black person I know that I can reach out to to say how grateful I am to you and your folk for all the riches you've given all of us. Music, literature, art, sports; Our society is incalculably better for the contributions of African American people like yourself. I wish you and your family the very best. P.S. You're an excellent photographer, by the way, and just so danged good lookin'.

Some of my best and most liked portraits were shot on T-Max 100 with a Pentax K-1000 and a 135mm 2.5.. I love T-MAX and find it sharper than Ilford and would put it almost even with Acros 100. Thanks for sharing

TMAX is crazy fine grained, I used to push TMAX 400 to 1600 and it still looked finer than Tri-X or HP5. It can be a bit boring that way, because it doesn't look like film sometimes. Just like you said, it has a digital look. TMAX 400 at 1600 has a great contrast too, I barely every added any contrast in post. Great vid man.

I used Tmax when it was introduced to the market in 1986 and was so impressed with it that I would shoot B&W instead of colour because it had more definition and sharpness than colour ( c41). I felt it was like using kodachrome but in B&W. You said that on medium format it looked digital and I couldn't agree more. I used a Mamiya 645 and it did give a 3D appearance. I have a Nikon D3200, but I prefer to use my Mamiya C220 or my Rolleicord with Tmax.

By far the best T-Max review yet. I’m shooting film with a Leica R4 with Leica 35mm f2, 50mm f2, a 28-70mm and a 80-210mm. All are truly great lenses. I’ve been a photographer since the ‘70s: weddings, groups, products, newspaper and magazine photography. These days I just shoot mostly for my own amazement. I have medium format cameras; 6x6, 6x7, and 6x9 plus a 4x5. Digitally I use a Nikon D750 with Nikkor lenses. But it is the Leica that captures my heart, especially in black and white. I have never felt like any film was giving me what the Leica lenses are capable doing. I have yet to try T-Max but you sold me. I’m ordering both 100 and 400 ISO. You are truly a great photographer and I greatly appreciate your work and this excellent review, but of course that Leica helps a lot : ) Best Regards,

Back when I was in college majoring in Photography TMax came out. I prefer Kodak Trix (400) and pushed processed a couple stops. Usually printed 11x14 on Illford graded fiber paper. (all burned up in the California fires). When T-max came out everyone hated it. I didn't hate it, though I did gravitate towards T Max 100 for finest grain possible or go to Tri-X and push developing for contrasted and harsher negatives. Decent lens, good focus and not moving camera (tripod) even my professor thought my Tri-X pushed was TMAX.and when I shot TMAX 100 they thought it was medium format. So are you processing your own film then scanning the negative in your own scanner (what brand/model) or sending it out? Or printing and digitally photographing a bw print?
@kevinthephotographer93463 жыл бұрын
I've shot a fair bit of TMax 100 in the past, but not so much recently. The results were good but the negatives had a pink stain to them and TMax was unavailable for a while due to a supply problem. However I still have about 20 sheets in 4x5 in the freezer which I hope to shoot this year.
@Raychristofer3 жыл бұрын
Hello Kevin how are you? That's cool, I have a 4x5 also but I only use it for paper negatives and cyanotypics experiments as I'm trying to keep economical right now. In the past when I shot ultra fine extreme I had some purple negative base color that got better with rinsing but would never completely go away. So far the tmax base is clear for me. Definitely share your results when you shoot it. The large format is a little tedious for me to work with so I've gone back to using medium format primarily

I love the tmax 400 especially if making larger prints. I have a 24" printer. I haven't tried it with the topaz gigapixel ai but I wouldn't be surprised if 24" prints weren't totally dooable. I used it on portra for a flawless 20" print. However, in 100, I lean towards acros. I'm up in Clearwater and when the sun comes back this fall, will try the 100 acros. But the 400 grain is a wonderful balance of sharpness and enough grain to let you know it is film not digital. Now I haven't shot the 120 on a 645 or 67 camera yet, but once the weather clears will give it a try. I expect it will be a tad to clean almost digital, but in 35 mm, wonderful.

TMax 100 (TMX) developed in Rodinal (1:25) was my go-to for medium format (6x7). Ultra fine grain to the point it was difficult to have enough grain to use a grain magnifier for focusing the enlarger. Now that I'm scanning (rather, using a DSLR to digitize my film), I want some grain. If I want a grainless photo, I shoot digital, but now I'm embracing grain as part of the character of film. I noticed the grain had more contrast with your TMax 400. I'm curious what developer you're using. You're getting some great results, and I admire your work (at least, the work you're showing here). Keep up the good work. BTW, despite my handle, I'm also located in Florida. ;-D

I'm using a roll of Tmax 400 in my Leica iiig at the minute, so intrigued to see how it comes out. I had a iiif with a Summitar and found it a really interesting lens. Apparently Leica say it's a portrait lens (compared to the 5cm Elmar f2.8 which I now have, which they describe as a landscape lens) It has a sharp centre wide open and softer towards the edges. The bokeh is very swirly and you can see that in your portraits. Stopped down it is indeed a sharp lens.Love the tones in your pics and the prison pics. Wondering if the 100 version has much room for error and if you can actually notice any difference in grain etc. I've started using film again after going digital, but I'm not impressed by the colour films available. They don't seem lifelike. Tried Portra 400 and not keen tbh. Saying that I tend to shoot using the Acros setting on the Fuji hence going back to using black & white. What developer do you use btw? That can make a difference to your film.
@Raychristofer3 жыл бұрын
Hello thanks so much for your detailed comment I need that. I use rodinal diluted 1/50 and it's hard to tell difference in grain in 400 and 100 . I agree about color film I have no passion for it. I rather use a vintage lens on a digital camera for color. I think Fuji is the right camera for film shooters who need digital also. Cheers
@Gramayr3 жыл бұрын
@@Raychristofer Thanks for your reply.I have an X-Pro2 with an adapter to fit the Leitz lenses. The Summitar works great as a portrait lens on the Fuji as it's a crop sensor so it uses the centre sweet spot (and I do miss that lens). The 5cm f2.8 Elmar and my 1936 uncoated 5cm f2 Summar can both be collapsed on it so it makes a great combo to go with the Barnack, but you do have to be careful when trying to collapse a lens in case it hits the sensor or interior baffles etc.. I've heard the X-Pro1 is even more film like in its IQ compared to the X-pro2/3. The Acros+ selectable filters (yellow, red, green) on the Fuji is perfect and I think you'd love it. You can add grain as well. I doubt I'll shoot colour again unless I can find a film that actually looks real (unless it's an infra red/extended one or cross processed slide film). I'll leave the colour work to digital and B&W to a proper camera lol. When I had the iiif I bought a 9cm f4 Elmar. Probably one of the cheapest Leitz lenses you can buy and a nice portrait lens as well. Unfortunately on anything other than a iiig you need an external finder, but they're pretty cheap compared to the 50mm SBOOI (I think it's called) They are just insanely priced, but the finders are definitely very easy on the eye to look through compared to the tiny inbuilt ones. Anyway, I'll jump on your channel and give you a follow. I'll look forward to anymore vids you do, especially if you're trying out different films.

TMax 100 is my favorite black and white film. Has decent latitude (I can get away with 2 stops overexposed), and it's very sharp without being unforgiving (ie: Pan F 50 and ADOX CMS 20 II are sharper, but both of them are unforgiving; the former has to be developed within a few weeks of exposure, the latter... EVERYTHING has to be perfect from exposure, to developing steps, and even the stopping and fixing). I especially find shooting architecture with TMax enjoyable. It gives a sharpness in fine detail that I can't get with Tri-X or Delta, and it's got a little more contrast for me than Delta. Yet, it doesn't look "digital" where digital can crush shadows and the gradation to jet black from dark gray, or white from light gray. I haven't really done much people photography with TMax, but your work is inspiring me to try shooting people (posed or street) with TMax... I feared it would be too contrasty and "digital-like" for people; you proved me wrong. KUDOS! And a great 2021 to you and yours!

ADOX CHS ii has been my favorite 100 speed film currently. Really fell in love with it in sheets and while it's got some grain in 100 it does seem pretty tight and I feel I get better separation than I do, say FP4. Now that said, previous to this T-Max 100 (TMX) was my favorite and it's still a beautiful film! So yep I think you're spot on there! Oddly, for 400 speed, I think I like Delta 400 more than T-Max 400 (TMY) though. Something about it. Perhaps my dev times are off but it tends to be fairly punchy for me but in ways I wouldn't expect. Delta 400 feels a little more, I dunno, creamy? Very unscientific comparison though!

Hello Peter nice to meet you, you know I also had that experience, shooting Ferrania I got some horribly blown highlights and black shadows and some perfect indoor portraits, same with Lomography Berlin. probably has to do with inaccurate metering but Im not sure. those russian cameras are great copies and you will get great images with those lenses.

Hey thanks for checking this out OC I thought you would get a kick out of it. you know I visited that prison three different times and shot it on different kinds of film. I was very brave because now I'm more apprehensive about going back and lately teenagers have been getting into the place and making the spot hot. I saw your lamography free camera giveaway, last year birgit from the New York office was kind enough to give me a 30% coupon and I bought 10 rolls of Potsdam, by the time I was finished shooting them I was Potsdamed out LOL

You got some skills there with your photography. With the world going digital and seeing some photographers still using analog would you say there is a quality benefit in analog over digital or do you do it for nostalgic reasons?
@Raychristofer3 жыл бұрын
Hey that's a good quest, I mostly do it for the challenge and I like the process. Interestingly a large format film image has been shown to have much more detail than a good digital camera but really at this stage digital is so clean we prob won't notice with the naked eye. Hope you're doing good. I just realized I haven't watched your camping trailer vid yet. Right up my alley

You can expose T-Mas 400 at 800 ASA and the development time is still the same, if you use T-Max developer.

I really like TMAX, but I think the most common thing I hear about it is that it's *too* clean. ha ha. I don't really mind it, though. I pretty much learned on TMAX!
@Raychristofer3 жыл бұрын
Hello Jamie thank you. yes its super clean on Medium format, too clean for me too. I think thats what Leica should include in its boxes of new film cameras though instead of tri-x to show what the lenses are really capable of.
@JamieMPhoto3 жыл бұрын
@@Raychristofer That's a good point! I might need to pull out some TMAX 100 to shoot on my G1 since I've been wanting a little less grain when I'm shooting 35mm.

Tmax is great. I do prefer Tri-X though. And you can't go wrong with a Leica and 50mm Cron. I pretty much shoot all my film on the MP and 50mm Safari Summicron.

Hey thanks man. I like tri x I. medium format more than 35 but maybe I don't have what it takes to make it sing lol.

@@Raychristofer I’m a fan of medium format but it’s way more cost effective to shoot 35. The shots you took really had a great medium format feel.

@@Raychristofer It definitely has a look and quirks to it, but another neat thing is the whole projection or slide viewer aspect. Meanwhile I might finally pick up a few rolls of tmax again, thank you!

My experience with T-max is mixed. Some very nice photos and some really bad photos. That is fist and foremost down to me, but also because of the simple cameras I used (had to use sunny 16) and the low light conditions. Compared to other films I think it has a smaller latitude. Gorgeous blacks and grain though.
@Raychristofer3 жыл бұрын
Awesome man thank you finally someone with personal experience in the comments. you're probably right because I'm very critical about metering and in low light I tend to use a tripod so maybe I didn't push it hard enough. where the cameras you using like box cameras with fixed shutter speed and aperture? Sometimes I wonder how folks got decent photos with those years ago I guess they tried to shoot in consistent light only
@Bigfarmer83 жыл бұрын
@@Raychristofer Thanks for your reply Ray. I have used T-Max in a 1956 Agfa Selecta with a 45mm f2.8 lens (and broken selenium light meter) and a Cosina CT-10 aperture priority only camera with 50mm f2.0 lens. Especially with the Cosina it was hit or miss. I used several other films in this camera and had mostly about 95% well metered photos, but far less with T-max. But it has been a while ago and with gained knowledge I should give it another go. Looking forward to your next video!

I used the Kodak TMAX400 120 film for many years, I shot it at 200 ASA/ISO and developed it in a thin solution for a long time with very few and very gently agitations, in that way the film had more grey tones and had still very good contrast, in modern words, larger dynamic range. I guess you can do the same with a Ilford Delta 400 film. Of paper I used Ilford Multigrade. Made great images from my 6x6 Hasselblad ! I also used Kodak TMAX 400 with my Nikon F3.
