I recently upgraded to the FX6 from the FX3, and even tho the image quality is very similar, to me the user experience of using a more robust cinema cam system is worth it for me. Every time I shoot with it I'm geeking out inside lol. And like you said, client perception is real. Everyone just looks at the camera and is like "wow". That to me alone is worth it.

Really simple difference between the two. Similiar features with a similiar image quality on the note that FX6 has more advanced features and gimmicks. FX6 more walks into the PRO PRO territory of a cinema camera, while FX3 is and can be considered PRO while still having some "amatuer" useful stuff like decent photo work. FX6 is way more robust and therefore can be easier to use, which in turns makes it "feel" like a real cinema shooting beast. FX3 is quite more nimble and light and good for hand or gimbal use, which then again has its own perks and advantages. Both cameras are excellent but have their own uses. Overall FX6 is a bigger brother and therefore without much surprise is a better camera, but due to its size its not applicable to use everywhere, where as fx3 in a small rig setup will perform and make those quality shots that make a huge difference in a project. The best way I always like to explain is FX6 is an A cam, while FX3 is B cam for supportive shots and work. One must also considered the type of work that youre gonna be included in, which densley impacts the type of camera u need. If youre doing youtube,weddings,vlogs,instagram and just want beautiful shots, even the APS-C FX30 is an excellent choice on a budget (if you dont plan on doing alot of low light shootings). FX3 is a perfect choice and golden middle ground for many. FX6 as a last choice is a full on fledged cinema camera that u dont really need if youre not gonna be doing cinema grade stuff. (youre not realistically bringing such a big camera for weddings okay, unless u hate your life :P). One might even consider A7SIII for more hybrid work.

Great video showcasing the differences. FYI at 9:54 right at the cut your audio went out of sync. It came back at 10:25. I have the FX3 and really wanted to get the FX6 however I had to switch out to a Red camera this week all because the only Sony camera with genlock is the FX9 (4 years old) and the Sony Venice ($40,000 more than I can afford to spend). Hopefully Sony announces a new professional camera soon.

With doc work I shoot a lot with the 10 bit long gop codec on the fx3. Such a helpful space saver while keeping enough color info. Pretty frustrating the fx6 doesn’t have it

Great video as always bro! I have the Fx30 and I'm looking to upgrade to the Fx3 even though I know we're due for a new Fx3 within the next year or so. So i'm trying to decide do I hold off. But what your video definitely solidified is that the Fx6 is not for me AT ALL (at this current phase of life) because I just don't think it's conducive to my style of running and gunning.

Super insightful video! How would you recommend setting up the FX3 for outdoor shooting with changing light when you are in front of the camera (ie I can't monitor or make any changes). Is there a way to use a wide aperture, and auto exposure or iso? Thanks!

I currently have an a6500. Been using it since like 2016/2017. Needed something that was equally as good for photos and videos cause that's the type of work I was getting. I'm looking to upgrade to a fx6 now to focus more on video content. The fx3 is tempting too but the build of the fx6 is what got me. I usually run smaller crews so things like sdi & ND's i tink will be more valueable over time even though it's more expensive. The new film the creator directed by gareth edwards DP Greig Frasier with John David Washington was filmed mosly on fx3. Would be dope to get your take on that. If fx3 is good enough for a oscar winning DP then it's for sure a cinema camera, nuff said lol

I wouldn’t call it a cinecam just because a movie was filmed on it. There was an award winning Hollywood movie filmed with the A7sii, that’s not a cine cam though. Both cameras lack essential cine-cam features and utility

We use an A7siii and a fx3 for all our work (tv, streaming services, and internet) and want to upgrade to the fx6. Even tho we have the money for it, we always buy something else like lighting and grip gear because the upgrades you get from the fx6 is all convenience and not quality. Probably just wait for the fx6 markii (or whatever they will call it) since we're in no rush to upgrade even tho we really want to lol

Hi buddy It's obvious that with the fx6 you're going to get a more crunchy image and better sharp images because fx6 brings internal ND filter without compromise the colors in film, otherwise with the fx3 when you put a External ND front in lens you have to be careful down the steps, anyway I think you know that already, the only 2 External ND I trust Polar Pro Peter McKinnon and Nisi filters, those are good but for some reason make a lil bit red skin tones and green color lil bit exaggerated making banding in some cases, so I prefer the Sony original internal ND filters and the best part of the FX6 vs FX3 with FX6 you can setup RAW-XAVC-I thru HDMI or SDI in the menu, the difference is so huge. As I am still learning, I was interested to hear you turn to the common and, for me, mysterious complaint about "lack of shutter angle" (at 6:59). Do folks mean there is a setting on some cameras that keeps shutter speed/frame rate ratio constant no matter the change in frame rate? Surely they are not complaining that their camera reports shutter speed in fractions of a second instead of degrees? I might be out of the loop as I shoot my films on very modest cameras (Fuji X-T3 and X-T4).

Hey brother, great video as always!! Love your content. I believe that the FX3 vs FX6 is a true David vs Goliath Story. I own both and the beauty of this is that I am not a KZbinr my comments is from working full time in video production with both and in true honesty we need to stop comparing the two. I believe in the right tool for the right job, in my profesional opinion and I said profesional because that’s what I do 24/7 they both fit in different spaces all though they both can live in the same places I am going to mention. FX3 lives in the more fast pace environment (Weddings, Profesional Social Content, gimbal for bigger jobs and as a great B camera in corporate production) for me The FX6 is for more Corporate, bigger production where you have a crew despite how many people use it for handheld in my eyes this camera belongs on sticks rigged out but that just me and that’s how I Operate mines but I tell you this, despite the FX6 being a real cinema camera and the FX3 not because that’s the honest truth! 8 out of 10 times I gravitate more towards the FX3 every single time for these reasons ( Better codec options, stabilization with Sony glass will always win over the FX6 no matter how heavy you make it, it’s lighter so I move faster for fitness videos, the ability to capture the moment right away all of us who operate the FX6 knows that’s a true statement) the FX6 was my dream camera and now that I own it and make money with it, I kinda love the FX3 more lol but that’s just me!!!

Okay, so you said you prefer the FX6 for handheld, and yet, the FX3 has IBIS. Can you make a video on that? Because I will likely be doing a lot of handheld stuff and that is an interesting point you made. Additionally, would you say that an FX6, despite being more "professional", is technically a better "beginner" camera over the FX3 because of the conveniences? I've been considering jumping into the deep end with an FX6 as a beginner just to do it, but if the FX6 may be easier, it removes that difficult stigma.

Honestly, i don’t like IBIS 😅 the lil wobbles make me sad and idk why it’s not that bad 😅 And like beginner is a hard one to qualify, usually a beginner you want to remove as many obstacles as possible, so the fx6 technically would be the choice But also beginners probably don’t have a lot of money, so the fx3 is financially safer

I have the budget for an FX6 but the choice is an FX6 or an FX3 with a 70-200 GM ii OSS 2.8 lens because I hear you should "date cameras and marry lenses". Tough choice on how to blow an enormous amount of money.

Kofi great video as usual my friend. I'm team FX3 and it's for a number of reasons. As you mentioned the lack of flexibility in the codecs in the FX6 makes it a lot less appealing to me, at the very least it would've been nice if they had added XAVC-S which surely they could've. ALL-I on the FX6 are such big files and didn't make sense for my workflow. I had two a7SIII, ended up selling one then ended up selling the other to get the FX3. So far no regrets, really loving everything about it. Now and then I will try and look through the EVF and realise oh damn this ain't the a7SIII ha ha. Though, I do have the a7IV which for me is still a king hybrid camera. I do wonder though if we will see a firmware update with shutter angle for the FX3 in a future update and maybe Sony compressed RAW? that would be the day. Regarding client perception, I just ordered couple vlocks and rigging out the FX3 once done it'll pretty much look a lot 'like a bigger cinema camera. Though also allow me to not need to keep changing the batteries so often. That's one thing that was on my mind and what I noticed was the FX3 seems to drain the battery a lot quicker than my a7SIII. Anyway, great video as always!

It seems like once you have an FX6 the 3 would be great for things like drone shots or to use as a "B" camera rather than getting the same sequence from a different angle and having to edit separate takes together.

It feels weird to compare them, even if you have the same image quality the FX6 has a lot more capable features. Timecode, proper audio ports and the ability to change the exposure and other stuff without crimping your hands.

Never really cared what manufacturers or users called a camera. "Cinema Camera" "Video Camera" "Hybrid Camera" Humans seem to have a pathological mania to categorize and put everything into a labeled box, which is actually a dysfunction and a sign of intellectual insecurity IMHO. In the end, none of this crap matters, all that matters is what you can do with the tool. Your footage looks great and the FX3 and FX6 are excellent imaging tools. What Sony and the world at large need to categorize them as is immaterial to me, I just want to use them to tell moving stories and create memorable images.

For me built in ND filters are for ENG (like the old Betacams) and Documentary cameras...., cinema cameras make image quality the number one priority. The rest of the camera and gear should be modular. There is no way built in filters are as good as 5x4 glass...., Built in filters are like buying a Porsche GT3 and using the stock rims for racing.

Tbh, i wish people would get practical with it. The fx3 is not a cinema camera because it lacks the features that have become essentisl for that format and are part of cameras for that format. There are ways to workaround them, but the term "cinema camera" is used to describe a class of cameras that come with those features and not just a decription of the image quality. And to be frank, I think the argument is being distorted when people say any camera is a cinema camera if you can press record on it. The fx3 is a fine camera, one that can get "cinematic" images from, but it lacks many of the features, software and hardware, that makes it not so. It shouldnt bruise anyones ego of the camera they have isnt commongly called a cinema camera. To add to this, its sad that sony is taking so long to add these software feautures that would help bridge that gap and im glad that people are calling it out on those missing features when others are willing to slap the word "cinema" or "cinematic" on things they like all because they wanna feel part of the club.

It's better to be aware of the features it doesn't have to make sure people are making an informed decision. Good video BTW, I hope I don't sound harsh or anything but I do think the fx3 is being labelled as something it isn't. Same goes for the sigma fp, S5II, and BMPCC cameras. They are all amazing cameras and it doesn't need to be mislabelled for us to know its still great. Biggest hurdle for starters is being misled about this stuff to then realise that they could survive on a £300-£700 camera given that the features on these "cinema" cameras is acc not gonna bridge that professional gap for them.

As it stands and under the commongly used cinema cameras, the fx3 alongside many mirror less just aren't cinema cameras. Which is fine. EI sucks tho. Being limited to only 2 iso's just kills any run and gun shoot with minimum lighting. Its a beautiful camera when you have crew and lighting and well lit environments. But so much of the time I'd rather shoot on an fx3 over the fx6 specifically because they did not put flexible iso on the fx6 for slog3
