We prefer shooting with Super 35 especially for nature documentary films. For example you get closer to a subject in nature filming with super 35. Also the Arri Alexa 35 is a super 35 camera with amazing low light capabilities and 17 stops of dynamic range for HDR filming. Our Sony FX30 is a beast. No problem with noise in lowlight. It's all about exposure and we use cinema lenses TO.5 or lenses with F1.4. Full Frame also has noise. I also prefer Apsc because of the variety of lenses. Even the new RED 8K is super 35. On KZbin unfortunately they are promoting FF as the best for pro work and simply isn't true. Great video.

I have 2 FX3s and 2 FX30s that I mainly use. In a lot of ways, I prefer the FX30 than the FX3, but that’s just my subjective preference. I believe both cameras does great in contexts that really takes advantage of their strengths. Most of their weaknesses are easily fixable in post. I film mainly live dance and theatre performances, both on stage and in-studio, with a multi-cam set-up. So, that footprint is perfect for my needs. In that context, there are things that the FX3 can do that the FX30 can’t. So, I use both of them to be able to do a lot more creative things with camera angles and depth of field in extreme lighting conditions that are common in shooting live shows. At the end of the day, it’s less about the tech specs of a camera than how it really performs in the real world when it’s in the hands of the person who knows what they’re doing with it. You can’t go wrong with either camera, really. But, FX30 is hands down the best bang for the buck. If you have a limited budget or just starting out, I say get the FX30. There are quite a lot of APSC lens choices to give you what you need to go a long way with for a fraction of what you would spend on glass for FX3. Spend the rest of your money getting a good audio recording and lighting gear to complete a full production set-up that can actually earn you money instead. I honestly don’t see a reason to get an FX3, unless you really need it to do what an FX30 can’t do and are going to fully take advantage of the full frame sensor. Otherwise, it’s not worth spending the extra cash. That said, if you’re not sure if you need an FX3 and really want to spend an extra couple of grand, I say get the FX30 and a really fast, full frame GM prime lens. You’ll be amazed what an FX30 can do with an f1.4 prime, shooting wide open in low light with a well composed scene. Probably better to spend more money on lenses anyways.

Not necessarily “better depth of field”, but rather “more shallow depth of field”. 😊 Great comparison 👍
@noth606Ай бұрын
Yep, there are many situations where a shallow depth of field is definitely not 'better'. There is a lot of min/max ideas among some people that I think are born out of looking at technical specs and specific sample shots rather than actually using cameras and shooting stuff. Background has to do with it a lot too, I've got the bug at times coming from a lot of stills photography where controlling the focus is a lot more central thing to how your results come out and a lot more practical to do. Shooting static in a studio with lights and flashes for stills there is bunch of stuff you can do with focus that are not really realistic to do with video. Sure, walking the plane of focus from one face to another in a scene without moving the camera is a kinda cool effect, direction attention by focus and so on, fine - but it's nearly never necessary and the "cost" of the ability to do that is very high. From body to lenses to takes to get it right.

Ive been using my FX30 since it came out and even if im not on a shoot or a job, i just pull it out and play with it. Do some nature shots or something. Maybe shoot a 5 min self shot short film or something just to have fun because its just so much fun to play with that camera (especially when its rigged out). I only have one but ive hit a point where im eye balling getting a second as my B camera because music video productions are ramping up for me now. I would go for an FX3 or maybe even an FX6....BUUUUUT what's the return on investment? To some a lot, to me? Not so much. I started off on an A6600 so Im already stuck in "Super35" mindset with lens choices, framing, crops, etc. So moving forward to the FX30 was a breeze when it came to that. So I prefer the FX30. Plus, I really dont notice that 1 stop less of dynamic range at all (like you mentioned) Also to note that I think you forgot to mention (but you did in other videos) - the FX30 is a 6k sensor, not 4k, then downscaled to 4k as its output file. So that gives you latitude for the cool stuff like the clear image zoom, using Active-Stabilization when full handheld not in a heavy rig and still have true 4k, all the cool trinkets you can do when your output file is 4k coming from a 6k sensor and STILL have true "4k". I can even crop in post a tiny bit and notice zero quality lose because of how sharp the 4k is. So my heart right now lies with the FX30. Lenses are cheaper, i have more lens options, the Siuri line of APSC e-mount lenses are like half the price of their full frame counterparts. It really keeps costs for me down while keeping quality extremely high in my opinion. I do wish though RAW was not cropped so much but my conspiracy to that is Sony locked it at 4.7k so FX3 users didnt bitch about not having 6k RAW...because they cant. Thats more of an issue with "RAW" and not really Sony (in a matter of speaking). But i've learned again to deal with that crop if I want to do a shoot all in RAW. Although, I do wish both the FX30 and FX3 just unlocked 12 bit color for us. At the very least, needing to use a CFexpress card or shooting to ProRes externally. That would be a cool feature I would like to see aswell as open gate...but I have heard Jason Morris hint that Opengate might actually be a feature coming to us soon after talking to Sony about it.

We've been getting ready to grab the FX30 and use it for some wildlife videography... A S35 camera plus our Sony 200-600mm becomes a 300-900mm instantly.. and at 4k 120 that would be a 450-1300mm! Think it should complement the A7iv we have nicely.

The difference of opinion stems from Sony's super refined market segmentation of each camera now. Each one suits a particular segment really well, like this FX30 for pro b-cam. Those not in that category might either find it an overkill or inadequate, but for those whose need it serves, it is really good. So sony definitely knows what it's doing, while Canon cameras are rather similar to each other.

Second base iso is 12800, who shoots at 12800? I never did. 12800 also means the camera is wax noisier than other cameras with second base iso at 4000 which is a much more likely used is. A lumix s5 for 2000 is much better at all isos under 12800. for my work i never went over 1600-4000 iso. Usally i stay under 1000shallow depth of field? I am on the fence about the FX3 - I already own a Sony A7IV as main camera and would very much want to stay in the Sony ecosystem. ( tons of lenses and even recently bought my first Cine lens ) The only concern is will Sony release an updated FX4 / FX3 Mark II / A soon 👀 -

I'll fully cop to being a complete amateur in video. It's something I started learning during the pandemic as a way to generate some higher quality recording studio/music related content for myself and my bands. Prior to the pandemic, I just used crappy action cams and minimal (if any) lighting. Then I started to learn a bit (from channels like yours, props) and bought my first "real" cameras and glass. I couldn't really afford to get into a FF ecosystem to start (because being a touring musician and running a recording studio eats up a large gear budget), so I opted for APS-C, in specific, the Sony A6400. I bought two, because I needed to capture multiple angles at once. And I didn't opt for the 6600 because the majority of things I shoot are static, so IBIS wasn't a high priority. I had limited glass to start, but immediately started getting better, more polished results. I got read pretty hard by some of the more accomplished people I spoke to for using a crop system over FF, but in truth, given controlled lighting and static shooting, I've actually been really pleased with what I've gotten, excusing some of the lower quality glass. Even now, I've got about 7 lenses and only two of them could be counted as "great" glass. I say all this because I want to up my game and I've been seriously (like, I currently have my finger over the 'buy now' button) considering the FX30. It seems like just the thing for someone like me. But I've been seeing all kinds of people shitting all over it on the Internet. It's hard to separate fact from fiction these days, I know, but I appreciate the level consideration you've given in this video. I like usable, actionable, unbiased analyses.

Bro im legit over the buy now button myself 😅😅 What did you do? Did you go for it? Was it worth it? What are you thinking? 😂
@CaseyLewis Жыл бұрын
@@dcmenow I did buy it. I think it’s a great camera and I’m stoked with what it can do, but less than a month after I bought it, Sony came out with a camera that does almost everything the fx30 does for $400 less. The a6700 might be a better option for you. Here are the notable differences that I can note between the two: - the fx30 has a more robust, more durable body design, but it is a little bigger and weighs a tiny bit more. - the fx30 has an in-body fan system, which means it’s nearly impossible to make it overheat, whereas the a6700 might do so if you shoot longer clips. - the fx30 has a full-size HDMI out, which only makes a difference if you hate microHDMI like I do. - the fx30 has Cine EI mode, which is nice, but I haven’t really noticed any difference except in S-Log3. - the a6700 has the “new, improved” Sony AI Autofocus chip, which is supposed to be better, but I honestly don’t know, nor do I have any complaints with the fx30s AF. - the FX30 is Netflix-approved. That doesn’t really matter unless you’re shooting stuff that might get on Netflix. 😂 Apart from that? Unless you really need or want anything that the fx30 has specifically, maybe you can save yourself a bit of money.

@@CaseyLewis Damn bro that was such a helpful list of information!! I appreciate it! So if you were recommending me a camera that will give you the best quality professional film which one should i go with? The fx30 because its legit a cinematic type camera or does the other do the same thing?
@CaseyLewis Жыл бұрын
@@dcmenow well, they both have the same sensor, the same resolutions, codecs, shooting modes (except Cine EI, as mentioned), take the same lenses and have most of the same options. I would say that the footage out of both cameras in every other instance OTHER than Cine EI in S-Log3 would be indistinguishable. And even in that case it wouldn’t be a massive output difference to shoot Flexible ISO instead of Cine EI in S-Log3. Two other things I forgot to mention: the fx30 also has dual card slots that can take SD or CFExpress; AND it is apparently better weather sealed. So unless you’re planning on long, professional shoots in hot environments, need external recording, need redundancy and flexibility in media storage, want to use the optional fx30 audio top handle for audio capture, or really want to squeeze an extra half a stop of DR out of the sensor, I’d say the footage you get out of the a6700 would be identical.

I''m very close to being able to make some camera upgrades, and I've been sold on the FX6 as my A cam for a very long time, but I have been torn about the FX3 vs the FX30 for my B Cam. The FX3 has the same size sensor as the FX6, which makes things easier in terms of image matching and color science to a degree. The FX30 is only marginally worse than the FX3, so it's not a huge deal. It seems like I can save quite a bit of money if I go with the FX30 and FX6 combo, but the FX3 and FX6 combo makes things simpler IMO. Any advice at all?

i have a MacBook Pro 16- in (M2 Max, 2023) . . . if i was to use the CFexpress Type A 160GB Memory Card, with the Sony FX30 Camera, would i need a USB-C adapter to get files off the memory card, onto the MacBook Pro 16- in (M2 Max, 2023) ?
@BejaeIngate3 ай бұрын
Yep you'd need a CF -A card reader for that. But you don't have to use the CF cards. I just got two Sony Tough 128GB SD cards with my fx30 and am yet to find a situation where it hasn't worked. The Sony SD's are fast enough for 10 bit 4K footage, you'd just need the CF express cards if you were wanting to shoot all the way up to the highest frame rates.

Good video, but you're using the term "depth of field" incorrectly. 'Depth of field' is the amount of the frame that is in focus from the closest to farthest subjects in the frame. Shallow depth of field = less of the frame in focus. Greater depth of field = more of the frame in focus. Full frame has LESS depth of field at a given focal length, and aperture, as compared to a crop sensor. The smaller the sensor, the GREATER the depth of field.

I am rocking a Sony A7SIII and a FX30. You gotta be very very carefull with your Highlight rollof but otherwise they match pretty good. The lowlight Footage is pretty good if you use something like neat Video because the noise is pretty workable. Whats pretty interesting is, if i pick a camera fast to do and try some stuff it is 90% the FX30 lol i dont know why. The FX30 is a great B Camera for Inteviews or for Gimbal work. Hi, I didn’t understand when you said at 9.54 : the FX3 will get better light performance something like Aps-c. So if I have an Aps-c camera like the Sony 6300 I should get the FX3 to have same low light perf? I film a lot of concerts with the 6300 so I’m looking for a new better small camera but the other issue is the lenses..all my lenses that goes to the 6300 won’t work on the FX3, so then I should get the FX30? I didn’t understand the cropping situation..if I put my SEL10-18 on the FX30 if won’t be a real 10-18? And even if the FX30 is less good in low light than the FX3, would is still be better or as good as my 6300? I hope you can answers to all questions :)
