I really like your analysis in the last few minutes of this video, i.e., about how one can only increase stride length so much, and how this relates to intended use, e.g. marathons vs. 5 ks... Thanks for the excellent review

I’m glad it’s helpful. I’m not sure if ASICS would necessarily endorse my analysis (I didn’t run it by them for confirmation), but I am not the only person who likes to distinguish the shoes by pace

In my opinion, if you look at professional runners, the shorter distance runners tend to be stronger and have a larger stride length. While, marathon runners are more efficient, so they often have a higher cadence. So personally I don't think I agree with Kofuzi, but to each his own. Thought this might offer some other perspective.

I’m adding to the chorus of commenters saying this is the most clear and comprehensive analysis I’ve encountered of these sibling shoes. But I agree with you, Ko, that in the end the only way to really determine which--if either-works for you is to try them on and run in them just as you suggest. I extend that to apply to all shoes. Let’s hear it for local brick&mortar running stores! As mentioned in the LS today, I asked Milestone Running in San Diego to order the Edge+ for me (any store that carries ASICS should be able to special order from their rep) and it turns out they’re carrying the Sky+ and have already rec’d them. I’m excited to run in both with as open a mind as possible. I also agree that any single element such as drop is not enough to go on, as I’m sure the individual variables of each model work in tandem-drop, stack height, CP placement and roll geometry. Then there are our individual traits which factor in: height, weight, leg length and body proportions, running mechanics (gait) and more. Martha

Taller dude that I am @ 6’2 I do tend to increase my stride before my cadence catches up like you mentioned when speeding up. I really like the MetaSpeed Sky cuz of more foam(I’m 190-192lbs). I land and push off on the lateral aspects of my forefoot so less of a rocker and more foam helps a bunch for me.
@paddywiggle2 жыл бұрын
I am a taller dude too (6’4”), and my stride also increases as my speed in increases, but I’m not very heavy (170). For me, though, the squishiness of the foam in the Sky is not what I’m looking for in a super shoe. The plate geometry in the Edge makes the shoe a bit firmer, especially in the forefoot, which is usually better for my metatarsal issues. I currently run in the Endorphin Pro, which is not much different than the Edge.

I agree that rocker geometry can be nicer at slow(er) paces rather than quicker. It can take some effort to hit the shoe's geometry and enlist the rocker's potential each step. I am looking at our friend the ZoomX Invincible - it's a lot of work to get that one rolling through the rocker naturally for some, maybe a la the Edge+ here?

@BrianLizard2 жыл бұрын
You are on track with why the plate is closer to the foot with the Sky. A stride runner is typically more flexible and that means the foot is more mobile too. Stride runners likely appreciate a stable platform. Often too much foam allows our feet to collapse into the midsole like an old waterbed. Where as cadence runners have less range of motion (shorter stride) and their feet don't deform as much in really soft foam. Stride vs Cadence isn't just a running style, it's defined by a physiological difference in a runners mobility.
@TheJandrade862 жыл бұрын
Great information, but from what i am understanding here at the end of the day with this plate configuration the edge is supposed to be more stable
@BrianLizard2 жыл бұрын
@@TheJandrade86 It depends on the foot... Stability comes in many forms and flexible feet need stability closer to the foot where it's needed most. Much like Brooks' Guiderails or On's Speedboards.
@slen6293 Жыл бұрын
Bit of an assumption here that the mobility of your foot dictates if you’re a stride or cadence runner. Which if you look at the make up of most racing shoes with high stack and a lot of bounce, with low stability. And majority of high level runners maximising distance per stride - your assumption doesn’t really fit. Take into account the higher ground reaction forces for stride runners compared to cadence runners. The preference to style of running is more likely driven by their tendon morphology and their ability to be reactive off the ground.

@kofuzi Жыл бұрын
Long answer: these shoes don’t necessarily diverge depending on race distance or runner speed. It’s more a matter of preferences. People who prefer more of a rocketed racing shoe with a bit more stability and firmness with quick turnover tend to choose the Edge Plus. People who prefer a bouncier ride with longer strides tend to choose the Sky Plus. I prefer the Sky Plus and have raced in it in distances as short at 5k and as long as the marathon and PRd in both distances. Short answer: probably, but you should try them both on if you can.

I read a higher drop shoe could reduce the irritation. Thoughts?
@jonb9194 Жыл бұрын
Edge+ for "cadence" runners - my translation is runners who have long ground contact time, low vertical oscillation, and long leg extension behind the hips. These runners have limited benefit from a normal rocker, since they already toe-off from a propulsive forefoot position. Most elites extend well behind the hips and have low vertical oscillation. Sky+ for "stride" runners - runners who have short ground contact time and higher vertical oscillation. Placement of the foam just in front of the forefoot, which should enhance the propulsive feel for earlier launchers.

My recommendation would be to find a shoe reviewer who runs distances, weekly mileage, and or intensities that are similar to you. I typically run marathons, so my preferences may not make sense for a sprinter

That's fair, thanks for the response. It's difficult to find people looking at shoes for my distances. Have to basically rely on word of mouth

Thanks for the in depth explanation. Except 1) I can’t use any super shoe on treadmill, too wobbly! Haha 2) I can try either because they don’t make size 14. And 3) I know you compared the Edge to Streakfly and that Adidas shoe, but wouldn’t you also compare it to be closer to the Endorphin Pro? Which is my preference and my Garmin graph (Thanks excel) definitely says I’m a cadence runner. Not to mention I need stability and the E-Pro gives that to me for the longest distances compared to Nike.

I generally think a person doesn't need a super shoe on a treadmill, but not all super shoes are wobbly - the Metaspeed Edge Plus is an example that comes to mind

I’ll have to try and pick it up when it releases, just like I had to do for v1 and v2. Adidas chooses not to send me shoes for whatever reason

Great marketing ploy. I got both of the originals. Still prefer the RC Elite original. At 33km on the Sky I thought I had stood on something like gum. Like there was a lump under my forefoot of the Sky on one foot but nothing there when I finished and checked at 35km.. Now afraid to use it in my marathon so sticking with the RC.

could you use the sky plus as a cadence shoe also? as in it could be plusher forefoot ride?

I ordered the edge+. Coming from NB RC Elite 2 with essentially same stack and drop. Does edge have better/snap energy return than the elite 2? Thanks

Which one would you choose for running a 70.3 triathlon? I personally think that when you start running with legs trashed because of the bike leg of the race, shoes that help your cadence are better, because increasing stride length requires a bigger muscular effort. What do you think about it?
@kofuzi2 жыл бұрын
I think you're overthinking it. I haven't done a 70.3, but when I did olympic distance, I felt like what I wanted for the run was whichever shoe was fast with an emphasis on comfort. so depending on which will be more comfortable/soft for you, that's the one I would pick

I started running for a year now & I started with a bike vaporfly next %2 and it gave me the Achilles’ tendon it really ruined my leg& the specialist told me that I run on my outter foot & he told me I should get insoles. I didn’t I went to the psychotherapist & did some leg work & bought the tri noose 13 I’ve been running in it & it’s perfect but yet I get a little bit of pain. Now I want to get a marathon shoes & im a stride runner so I’m guessing the metaspeed sky + is the one? Thank you & kindly share your thoughts & experience.

how's the edge+ rocker design compared to hoka's carbon x? i have a pair of carbon x. love it a lot especially when i need to do long run. the rocker and the carbon plate made the run much easier and gave me very solid protection.

Hey Kofuzi, great video as always! I was about to ask the same question regarding size. I tried Sky v1 at Sevilla and needed to go half a size up (if running a marathon) comparing to Nike and Adidas. Wondering if the last in Sky+ is the same as Sky V1.
@wonkydonkey78992 жыл бұрын
@@pjmacgyver85 according to docs of running, ASICS fixed the sizing issue. Many runners who tried v1 ended up having to go up 0.5. This time it’s more true to size.

Do you know the Truemotion U-Tech shoes from Truemotion?

I think I bought the wrong version. I got the Edge, thinking that while my overall cadence isn’t that fast, that I increased it enough in races to be considered a cadence runner. Last month, I used them for a downhill marathon, and ended up with a bruised heel, like I’ve never experienced before (been running since the late eighties). I also have the Saucony Endorphin Pro’s, but wanted something that didn’t expose the carbon plate as the downhill marathon was on a gravel trail. For numbers, I rarely get my cadence above 166, but yet, I’m placing in every race I run. Do you think that the Sky Plus is a better option for me than the Edge Plus? I took them out again today for a 10 mile training run, and they just don’t seem any better than a decent pair of trainers.

I don't think I can answer whether you're a cadence runner versus a stride runner with just a max cadence number
@Lalalalalalal2510 ай бұрын
Hey, I am a really tall Runner (197cm). Therefore I‘m having a Long stride. So should I get the Sky because of my Stride? ( I also have the Vaporfly 3 and I don‘t like it because I just feel Like I‘m sinking in the Foam, the Vaporfly 2 was really good) Thanks for your answer!

From what I understood in your analysis regarding plate placement, the Sky is a little bit more stable coz the plate is farther from the ground and closer to the foot?
@kofuzi2 жыл бұрын
nope. the opposite. my apologies for not communicating more clearly.

@@kofuzi Thanks. So it is the Edge that’s just a bit more stable in this regard? (Plate closer to the ground, farther from the foot)

So looking at recent data points, I raced a 5K (7:40min/mile) and I averaged 171spm and 1.22m stride length, whereas on longer races of 10 miles and 13.1 miles (8:40mijn/mile) I averaged 166spm and 1.11 stride length. That's about a 3% difference in cadence and a 10% change in stride length. If the numbers are right, are you recommending the Meta speed Sky then? Thanks!
@kofuzi2 жыл бұрын
Without examining your numbers, I will point out what may be a problem with your assumptions. Everyone’s stride length will increase with speed. A stride runner’s length will increase proportionally more than a cadence runner. In other words, when charting pace over stride length, the m of the two different runners will be different.
@mopoffool2 жыл бұрын
What I don't understand about Asics's framing of this stride vs. cadence runner distinction is, if I'm a stride runner whose cadence doesn't increase much from easy to marathon pace (and if I'm looking for a marathon shoe), then why shouldn't I get the Edge because I need extra help increasing my cadence at marathon pace? It seems like in that case the Sky would cater to what is already my strength, while the Edge would be what I need to improve my weakness, where there is more room for improvement.
@kofuzi2 жыл бұрын
I think you're looking at these are gait trainers and not as racers. and ultimately, if you're a stride runner at marathon pace, you're just not going to find the Edge Plus to be comfortable
@mopoffool2 жыл бұрын
Well put. That's true. Super shoes are so expensive, and most of the miles I put into them come after I've retired them from racing and use them for certain training runs. I'll take your advice and look for a local store where I can try both shoes on a treadmill, since in the end it seems you just need to pick the shoe that feels right for you.
