I got both shoes today and is just back after trying both. I did 2x2k with both and 5k pace and preferred the Edge. Then I did 2x2k with both at my marathon pace and very much preferred the Sky. One noticeable difference between the shoes you didn’t mentioned is that the rubber on the outsole extends further back on Edge. I think that implies that Asics think Edge will be preferred by heel strikers. I’m a heel striker, but after this quick test my preference will be Sky anyway. When you pick up the pace they feel softer and more enjoyable - but I was faster in Edge because they keep pushing me forward in a different way. Sky is just great feeling and squishy, but it feels like I need to work a little harder to keep the tempo. I will keep both just for fun. And BTW, Sky felt quite more accommodating than Edge but both shoes were actually shorter in length than I anticipated. I think they are closer to original series in length (still little longer) but not longer than + series.
@MrShield19789 ай бұрын
One things to add. I’m disappointed at Asics quality control, in Sky my right shoe is 165g and the left 174g. 9 gram difference! In Edge the right shoe was 172g and the left 167g. I think 5g is on the limit of ok. Also on the Edge pair the front of the shoes are not identical, the rubber goes up to a higher toe on the left shoe and the rocker therefore is not identical. On Sky they look identical but has this huge weight difference.

Wow very informative comment thank you! What you say it’s in line with kofuzi’s review and in my case the cadence /stride length data I extracted from my watch. My conclusion after watching this video is that if I buy the Sky I can keep it for Half Marathon /Marathon and use another shoe i.e., Adios Pro 3 that I already own for 5k -10k. Thank you for your comment and thank you Chris for making this video.

Great info! I found both Paris series for longer than the Plus series and TTS for me with absolutely zero fit issues or foot/toe problems. Asics race uppers are outstanding as well. While I don’t think Asics has designed either shoe for a specific foot strike… I think years of Vaporfly running has shown us that it is optimized for a forefoot striker. It’s not that they can’t work for heel striking (they can and do) but that configuration just seems to favor the forefoot.
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
I had a 4g weight difference between mine. No QC issues at all… everything is symmetrical and clean. I actually have never bought an Asics shoe with any QC issues. Maybe I have a low bar coming from years of Nike. 😂

I don't think I've ever heard a simpler, more complete explanation of the carbon plate shoe configurations. I would consider myself a stride runner who likes to feel the ground. That probably comes from getting my start as a sprinter. What would you consider the Adidas Takumi Sen or the Puma Fast-Fwd Nitro?
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
Definitely the Takumi Sen for you… the Puma Deviate Nitro Elite is another one I’d look at… also you may really like the Vaporfly if you have never run in it before. Avoid the Puma Fast-FWD could be interesting for you but I think the Deviate Nitro Elite is a better bet.

I dont necessarily totally agree. I got both and the Metaspeed Edge Paris feels both natural for my stride and I perceive it as softer. I think the closeness of the plate to your foot (just as it can close to the ground) can impact your perception of softness/comfort. I tend to agree that if you have a big powerful bounding stride and are really putting a lot of force into the forefoot to load it, the the Sky Paris is for you. If you tend to not have as big and powerful of a strife or roll over more (including midfoot or rear landings) then the Metaspeed Edge Paris is for you. Furthermore, the Alphafly 3 is more Vaporfly than ever with more roll, higher drop, etc. As someone who wasn't a big Alphafly v1 person for similar reasons to the Metaspeed Sky+ (although Alpha v1 worked better because it was softer), the Alphafly V3 is better for me than ever. Similarly, the Endorphin Elite also works well just like the Pro 3. These shoes don't absolutely destroy my quads by forcing a big powerful stride that changes my gate like the Metaspeed Sky+ did (and to a lesser extent Alphafly v1). Similarly, if you listen to how Puma talks about the "powerful propulsion" vs "lightweight propulsion" of the Fast-R 2 vs the Deviate Elite 3, it appears they are trying something similar and trying to have the Fast-R 2 be that big powerful stride type of shoe. I will say that on the run the Metaspeed Sky/Edge Paris are closer than ever and the difference feels more nuanced. I can run in the Sky Paris without totally trashing my legs now because of the foam improvement, though the Edge Paris does still seem to work better. Both versions are much better than the + versions because of the new foam and lower weight. They still aren't the softest and are kinda on the Pwrrun HG side of things. They are no longer harsh, but are still one of the firmer super foams.
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
I agree fully that the difference between the MS SP and EP is very nuanced now. It’s as drastic as it was with the Plus series. It is why I feel strongly it comes down to feel (and perception as you pointed out) more than anything now.

Finally a expert based comparison of the Edge and Sky! Really appreciated. This year I ran 3 marathons: London in the VF2, Sofia in the Sky Paris and Eryri on the AAP3's - one of each of you explained configurations! (Obviously can't compare Eryri to Sofia on London as it's much more trails and undulating) but still - found the VF very aggressive but fast, the Sky Paris more comfortable but not as fast over the last 5K and the Adidas very comfortable for the whole distance which absolutely helps on those last K's.

Love the deep dive technical videos. They’re always so interesting to watch. I’m definitely more of a cadence runner and tend to gravitate toward the rolling category of super shoes (mainly Vaporfly). But after trying the new Sky Paris, I could definitely see myself picking it over the Vaporfly for Marathon specifically. 5K - 15K, I think Vaporfly is still better. HM is a toss up, but still leaning Vaporfly. I feel that the bouncier, less aggressive plate configuration is more sustainable for races that last 2+ hours. It’s hard to ride a Vaporfly with good biomechanics for that long. I think foot strike is irrelevant tho. It’s more about how much you’re engaging the ride. I still need to get my hands on an alphafly 3! Trying to dial down my marathon show for Chicago this fall. 😅
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
You are echoing my same feelings on the MSEP & VF3… it’s not about distance to me but I am finding the less aggressive plate in the MSEP is easier for more steady running. It’s not that the VF3 isn’t… it’s just use average runners can have sloppy mechanics, especially when fatiguing… the MSEP feels like it has a bigger sweet spot. I need more running in it… but it’s feeling like that early.

Great video! I actually wear 3/4 length orthotic inserts and tried last years Metaspeed Edge+ and found that the ride was too stiff and loaded my calves more than I wanted (I sold them shortly after purchase). Your above video (and the other new video on the Metaspeed Paris) really illustrates the changes Asics made to the foam geometry and I commend you for that... great graphics! The Paris models are similar now with differing plate locations in the forefoot. I now see that last years model for the Edge+ had very little heel stack/foam which I certainly felt in the few runs I did (pace approx 4:30/km) and they seemed very "slappy" with the low plate configuration. I thought my orthotics were the issue but now I'm considering getting the new Metaspeed Paris Sky (based on your video!) as I really like the bouncey feel even though I'm a cadence runner primarily (plus I train in the Novablast 3 and 4 currently). I think the thicker softer foam in the Paris (softer than last year's model) up front and along the entire shoe for this model, will help soften the overall feel when wearing orthotics. Any thoughts on my reasoning? My race distance is typically half marathon as I focus on IM 70.3 triathlons. Thanks for doing these technical videos!

I think you may be on the right track with your logic… assuming they your orthodox and the high plate of the Sky Paris don’t interact somehow. They will be very close to one another.

Clearly the best review between those two 2 shoes! My cadence is: 170-175 easy pace (4:45-5:00/km), 178-180 Threshold (3:55-4:00/km). 180-183 5km-10km pace (3:35-3:45) I think my cadence is medium-high? Therefore better the Edge? Mainly I want it for 10km races
@SagasuRunningАй бұрын
I'd call that medium cadence. your Threshold pace. My 5k pace is around 3:40/km and my cadence can get well over 200spm, 1mile pace, it's over 210spm...honestly too high (I always need to remind myself to "glide" in my stride). Honestly, per my video, you can go either way. Just depends on the feel you prefer. Both shoes will work. Asics's stride vs cadence thing is meaningless. Go for what feel you prefer...

Been revisiting your analysis - great analytical framework which gets me to rethink what shoes are good for me. I'm a forefoot striker with cadence range of 180 - 200 (5.15min/k - 3:15min/km) easy to short interval. I feel I'm in the cadence camp. Are you also a relatively high cadence runner and would you say that has something to do with your preference to say VF3?
@SagasuRunning4 ай бұрын
I would say our analytics are very similar. My paces are nearly identical to yours and my cadence range is nearly identical. There are a few things I find I prefer about the VF3 but the ability to accelerate, via cadence, is one of them. I find it interesting that the Edge is supposedly firmer than the Sky due to the plate positioning - my experience is the opposite! I just bought the Edge Paris, and in the shop I tested the Sky and Edge back-to-back for 2 minutes at 4:00/km. I found that the Edge felt much softer and more comfortable. That said, the Vaporfly Next% v1 has been my favorite shoe for 5 years, so it makes sense that the plate configuration in the Edge works well for me. I could also mention that I run with a high cadence, 190-195 SPM in races.
@SagasuRunning5 ай бұрын
You are used to that plate configuration and know how to load it. You are also used to the main chunk of foam under your foot. I’m not surprised you felt this. I do too, as another vaporfly runner. Generally though the low plate configuration is considered more aggressive, harsher and more stable.

That is really a bummer. Just started running 6 months ago at 44yo (played basketball for 25years) and I'm looking to buy my first marathon shoe. Been training in Velocity and Deviate Nitro 2 and Boston 12. Boston 12 is wide enough in the forefoot and Pumas made 4 of 5 nails on my left foot black. Love Puma shoes, DN2 fells more comfortbale and softer then Boston 12. I think i'm a midfoot to heel striker. Was really looking forward to Edge Paris but knowing how narrow it is.. What shoe would you recomend (as a suggestion to look more into)? Would Vaporfly 3 be ok or maybe Superblast (as i'm going to run halfs but not full marathons in a year or two)?@@SagasuRunning
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
If you like the Boston already… I’d look at the Adios Pro 3… the fit will be similar too. Adidas Lightstrike Pro and Puma Nitro foams are the same compound (though tuned differently)… so their feel is similar too. The Vaporfly 3 isn’t a great option for heel striking, it has some durability problems there. The Alphafly 3 is another option if you want to try Nike… but it is MUCH softer than anything you have been running in (that you mentioned) so keep that in mind.

@@SagasuRunning Hi - hope you're well? My thoughts on the MS Sky ... So after several runs totalling around 50 kms in the ASICS MS Skys P, stability turned out not to be a dominant issue for around 25 Kms. Up to that point, the shoes felt generally comfortable and dare I say spongy. I was always conscious that the heel is narrow so perhaps I was more careful about heel landing than normal to avoid a misstep and twisting my ankle. With the UK Stevenage Marathon on the 20th Oct, a twisted ankle would have been especially bad news! They clearly appreciated me leaning forward and putting some extra effort into front to mid landing and returned the favour. On both of my long runs, at the 25 kms ish stage, my feet rapidly became uncomfortable and I was delighted to finish shortly afterwards. Clearly my feet will have to adapt to the Sky's - suggestions? Just put in the Kms with them I guess. Actually I experienced something similar with the ES4s but not the EP4s ... The EP4s just seem to keep ticking the Kms off for me. They don't change or evolve much on the way, incredible! 😀 I had some difficulty choosing my marathon shoe this weekend and was very tempted to opt for the EP4s. Ultimately I selected my Superblast2s - I didn't want to risk using a plated shoe this time ... I'll have to do a full marathon in the EPs but another time 🙂 Anyway, hope you found my comments interesting 😁 BW. David
@SagasuRunning2 ай бұрын
@dgcadogan The sore feet in the MSSP could be from the overall stiffness of the shoe. It’s a VERY still platform. Shocked by you saying the foam felt “spongey”, that is one word I’d never describe FFTurbo+ as. If the EP4 also gives you similar foot soreness..the EP4 is also a stiff shoe but much less so than the MSSP… I’d say your feet need to get used to running in plated shoes more. If you train a lot in non-plated shoes your foot is used to flexing and moving a certain way in your gait. Adding a stiff plate in there causes that to stop and work other muscles, which is likely where toe soreness comes from. The only real answer is to run more in the stiff plated shoes, specially focusing on mechanics when you are in them and paying attention to where you direct feel discomfort. Once you know where the discomfort is starting from you can work on strengthening those areas. My guess it’s also not directly in your foot, thats just where you feel it set in… the stiff shoes are changing your stride in a why your body isn’t used too.

Unfortunately, it just didn't seem to transition easily for me at my marathon paces. Reminded me of the Alphafly v1. If I focus on my form, I can get the shoe to pick up the pace. I also don't notice the transition issue at faster than marathon pace. On top of that, I had a quality issue with my pair where the right shoe heel bowed in more than the left heel and caused irritation afer 8+ miles. I returned the shoes and I don't have the energy to try the Sky. I will stick with the Vaporflys for now.
@SagasuRunning8 ай бұрын
The MSEP is a great shoe, fantastic shoe, but it is still not a Vaporfly… glad you could return them. It’s odd to have a quality issue with Asics… their fit/finish is usually so high.
@NeillyVille9 ай бұрын
As a heavy forefoot striker, I think the Sky Paris is for me. I loved the v1 (600km) so with the Paris with a softer and more responsive midsole and the significant weight reduction overall, this is a sure buy for me. Asics are onto something.
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
The v1 Sky has a low plate configuration… so you might want to check the Edge Paris first. Unless you did run in the Sky+, which introduced the high plate.
@NeillyVille9 ай бұрын
Vaporflys have low plate and I love that and Alphaflys have high plate and I love that too so I don't know, I guess it's just the midsole for me not the position of the plate. However, Sky Paris will give the light and snappiness of the Vaporfly with a Alphafly-like setup which is going to be awesome especially with the amazing weight reduction.
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
@NeillyVille On paper that should be the case for the Sky Paris. That’s what I tried with the Sky+ last year but couldn’t get over the late stage rocker and massive amount of foam under the toes.
@torenforsberg19 ай бұрын
I'm definitely a stride runner. I'm 6'2" and weigh 240 lbs with a fairly long stride and a low cadence rate. However, I'm wondering if in your opinion one of these shoes translates better as a 5 to 10K racer, regardless of stride versus cadence? My goal this year is to improve my distance running by increasing my overall speed in short/mid distances. I'll be running multiple 5k's and a 10k in the spring/summer, then I'll be running a half marathon in the late fall (using the Hoka Cielo X1). Would the Edge provide more benefits given the higher stiffness and stability in the shorter distances, even for a stride runner?
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
I would think you are the Ideal Sky Paris runner. The Cielo x1 will give you the lower plate, even with the craziness of the geometry. You are heavy enough and likely strong enough you need the extra foam in both shoes. You’d probably do fine in the Edge Paris but I don’t agree with the distinction they one is for short distance and one is for long distance. They are designed to cover the same distances and use cases.

There is no specific universal number. In everyone’s data both a stride length AND cadence will go up the faster you run. However, one will go up faster than the other. According to Asics that is what you “are”. Though in the Paris series the two shoes are so similar it really comes down to which feel you prefer.

Thank you for your great review. When you say that the edge would be “stable” can you compare its relative stability to the Endorphin Pro 3/4 and the Vaporfly? Currently I've been racing in the endorphin pro but the Edge/Sky look very interesting for fall marathon season
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
Stable is very relative here… it IS a super foam super shoe… but compared to the Vaporfly I’d say the MSEP is better given the FFTurbo+ isn’t as compressive as ZoomX. Also the Vaporfly is actually wider in the forefoot and midfoot compared to the MSEP (which is very narrow). The Sauconys are wider and more flared on the sidewalls so would offer more stability over either, even with their compressive foams.

Thanks a lot for this great video. When looking at my data, it seems that I am more a stride runner than a cadence runner (comparing the percentage of increase for both). However, I am more used to low plate shoes like the Endorphin Pro/Speed which I appreciate a lot. I have always thought that low plate shoes were softer and more comfortable for half-marathons/marathons and this was a reason I have made this choice in the past. But the new Paris version seems the opposite, with the Sky being a bit softer and still very comfortable. So I am a bit lost now to decide between the Edge/Sky. Also, I am still waiting for some durability reviews about these two shoes (the Endorphin Pro had a great durability)
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
It’s one of those days things that you need to try both. Moving to the different platform (low to high plates) will take some trial and error. Durability is one of my biggest questions about the Paris Series. I’ll be testing them as much as I can in the coming months.

Very well explained. I bought the sky Paris after briefly doing a very short treadmill test in store. The edge felt too much like the VF3 which I’ve just bought a few months ago and are too squishy for me (I’m 195lbs). I have the AF1 which I like but I’m surprised given the plate configuration similarities, the sky feels very side to side unstable. I’m concerned it wouldn’t be supportive enough in the latter stage of the marathon. I’m aiming for 3:05-3:10 and was looking at the CieloX1 and returning the sky’s but worried that the extra 100g or so at my shoe size would be a big trade off. The reviews for the sky has been so good I really want to give it a chance, any suggestions?
@SagasuRunning20 күн бұрын
Honestly, try the Alphafly 3. It has the same bounce the Sky has but infinitely more stability and comfort. It's also not as soft as the VF3, at least the Air Pods add another dimension to the ride. It's the faster shoe for the marathon by alot.

The Saucony Endorphin Elite v1 is worth looking at…it’s also similar to the Sky. The Cielo X1 is in there too but it’s not REALLY a shoe focused on speed, it’s more for comfort.

I may have decided to buy both so I can try them out. I thought at first I was a cadence runner, but then I realized I might be a stride runner, and then I just didn’t know because I think it changes depending on the workout or the race goal since I’m still learning and developing my running style. Luckily I found one pair on a BIG discount, so I could justify the splurge to experiment and see which is better for my needs.
@SagasuRunning6 ай бұрын
This is the ideal way to do it if you want to buy both. This is the issue with cadence be stride. Every runner increases both when going faster, just one is more prominent than the other. However, as I pointed it… it really comes down to the feel you want under foot more than anything else. Enjoy them. You can’t go wrong with either.
@yiann1sk9 ай бұрын
The thing is that the first Metaspeed Sky had a low plate. The Sky+ initiated the high plate. Looked my Apple Watch data to understand if in Marathon pace my stride or cadence increase the most, turns out they both increase by ~25% from Zone 2 to Marathon Pace. Tried both shoes in the shop the Edge seems more fluent to my feet, but in shop you don't really run.
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
Ya, the first generation of the Metaspeed was more about how much foam, not really about differing plate configurations… there were minor differences but the stack height and rocker differences were more how the shoes differed. I ran in the Sky+ last year, knowing I am a cadence runner per ASICS’s definition but it was an experiment that was interesting. But in the Paris series I’m definitely an Edge runner. The Sky just felt awkward. Not as bad as the Sky+… but not for me.
@yiann1sk9 ай бұрын
@@SagasuRunning I always thought I'm a stride runner -but now I doubt about it. Data shows that I become stride runner at 5k -10k pace not so much at marathon /half marathon pace. Original Sky, which was also marketed as a stride one, was my first super-shoe and the first shoe I fell strongly in love with (the other one being the Superblast). I haven't run in Sky+. The other super shoe that I've run in is the ADIOS PRO3, which gave me some PBs and great races, but I never fell in love. Oh wait! I've run 20km in Vaporflies 2 and hated it, so much so that I gifted them to a friend. Have you run in the original Sky or Edge? If yes, how you'd compare them with the current models? What was your preference then?
@SagasuRunning9 ай бұрын
I ran in both at an Asics demo event when the shoes launched and did eventually buy a pair of Edges…. But I always found them too stiff. The super still Asics plate with FFTurbo was too much for me. The Edge Paris feels very different. FFTurbo+ is very resilient without being too softer… but it’s not harsh like FFTurbo could be. The plate feel is similar to the Magic Speed 3, which was like eh OG Edge to me… but the foam adds a totally different level to the shoe now. It’s a big change.

Not really. Foot strike doesn’t determine cadence vs stride, both types can have any foot strike. Again, it comes down to the feeling you want.
