Kogan plays Sarasate's Zigunerweisen

Rabin, Heifetz, Szeryng, and Kogan were the greatest violinists I ever heard, somehow they stood out a little more than everyone else for some reason. I found out a long time ago how hard Kogan's recordings are to find, and I have been collecting them ever since.
I think the best thing Kogan ever did was the Tchaikovsky concerto from a double cd called "Artist Profile", it is out of print but well worth finding and if you ever get a chance to hear Kogan play the Tchaikovsky get it at all costs. Only Rabin equaled what Kogan did with the Tchaikovsky in my opinion.
I have uploaded rare out of print and unreleased recordings that are difficult to find, I hope you like them.

Kogan was not just a violin virtuoso - he was an artist possessed of great understanding of everything he did. Gitlis is another such artist. There are few like them. Thanks for posting this live recording.

"Kogan was the only classical violinist of note that preferred to play on all 4 steel strings (Thomastic brand). Most serious classical players prefer steel E-string, and maybe also steel A-string (as in case of David Oistrakh), while using gut or synthetics on G and D strings. Steel gave Kogan more clarity and power, while sacrificing warmth, depth and sweetness associated with gut or synthetics."

The last part tells me this was an off night for Kogan. Maybe he decided the day of the performance that he was going to play this? Nonetheless, Kogan is still phenomenal

If Heifetz is unable to achieve something on the violin, it must be physically impossible. I like Kogan, even to the extend that I sometimes prefer his peformances over that of my absolute favorite Heifetz, but there is only one violinist that can play the Zigeunerweisen perfectly.

this is pure sublimity. if i had a good day like this "off day" then i would be ecstatic. OMB is correctr when she says no violin player is a god. they are human like us and can make mistakes and be ill or in a bad mood all things can affect ppl

certainly it appears as if there are some intonation errors here partic towards the end, but still it is superb esp for a live version. but def worth checking out francescatti. as for heifetz -in these pieces he just doesnt quite "do it for me"

I've seen both Sarah Chang and Janine Jansen play for real and I was not very impressed. Of course they play better then normal violinists, but compared to peformances like the ones of Heifetz and Kogan, it's rather sloppy and not very special. I would love to see more modern violinists, but my financial situation and time don't allow for much of this.
