hi paddy, am someone who just loves watching travel vlogs. With the pandemic around and not being able to travel, videos like these are a great escape to enjoy things virtually. and i must say out of all the vloggers i religiously follow, i find your vlogs very well detailed and well presented. (you know how some vlogs are 80% occupied by the vlogeers face & blabbering!! lol ), It feels very balanced! wish to see more & more from you. Keep up the good work! :)

Another great video. I've been to Koh Phangan once. I don't remember anything about it though so I assume I had a great time. My daughter has been up north in the Seattle area visiting her mom for the past week and a half, so I've been cracking open multiple cans of beer each evening watching multiple episodes of your Thailand videos (starting from the very first one) trying to chase you down to your present productions*. I'm about one year behind you at this point. Thanks for all of these - they have provided many an enjoyable evening. *I do watch each new Vietnam episode when it comes out though.

Paddy, loving the whole Thailand series and your sense of humour. The last time I was in Haad Rin was 1995, I don't recognize anything, they didn't have paved roads, a night was beanbags on the beach with candles on a table and stumbling drunk back to your bungalow with a flashlight. Good memories. Enjoy yourself.

The full moon party has rightfully been called one of the worst examples of “everything that is wrong with backpacking tourism”. Most businesses in the area are not solely living off of the monthly full moon party. The few businesses that will fold if the full moon party doesn’t come back will move on to the next thing of the same kind and will recover faster financially than it will take the flora and the fauna of the island to recover from the negative environmental effects.
@ellefsensbarmyarmy84913 жыл бұрын
I’ve spent more than a yr in koh phangan, over a period of 3 yrs, and since I’m not a party guy I didn’t like the full moon. I’ ve been to around 10 I guess, but stayed at home for the most part. I think you are wrong though. The vast majority of the economy on the island is built around the full moon. Most places in Had Rin was only full 3-4 days every month. The hotels, restaurants, street vendors of all kinds and basically every other business on the island get their income from to the party. Had rin without the full moon would just be a small beach town, and a lot of the tourist that actually stay a white and explore other part of the island would never have come in the first place without the full moon. And I’m not even counting in the illegal economy with drugs etc that plays a big part on the island. Hopefully covid kills it, but I think it will be up and running again.

Hi Paddy wanted to give you a big shout out for doing some island cleaning.. if everyone would pick up after them self's there would be so much less need for this but leaving a place cleaner is always a great thing to do.. Kudos to you.. towards the end of the video you were reminiscing about the full moon parties and now that time is now over ! but maybe a new cleaner more sustainable lifestyle will bring better tourist with more money to spend on a island that is not being trashed... L.A Rob
@martin369593 жыл бұрын
Yes, another lovely video. Thanks Paddy, i'm enjoying each and every one of your posts very much and i agree Paddy diserves a shout out not only for the video but for caring about cleaning. You are very right bro, if everyone picked up after them self's or even leaving a place cleaner it is a great thing to do. These islands are a true paradise but a paradise with a few flaws in beauty. Sadly even on deserted shores there always is floating plastic debris being washed on those beautiful beaches. The pollution of plastic in the ocean world wide is one of the biggest problems on this planet and it makes me sad to think about. However the paradisiacal impression of those beautiful islands can change a bit if you take a closer look. You can imagine Haad Rin Beach, where the famous or infamous full moon parties were held, always looked just horrible after those parties and needed a big cleanup. Plastic straws, empty bottles and so on and so on .... trash just everywhere on the beach and in the water. It always would take a long time for volunteers to clean up the place. Party hard for one night, then leave and never think about the impact on nature is what most people would do. I don't know how waste disposal is being handled now, not only on Haad Rin beach but everywhere on those touristy islands. It used to be and maybe still is one of the the biggest problems on the islands. Clearly this is a side effect of tourism. The more tourism, the more problems. Long before there was the first Full Moon Party on Koh Phangan, on many of Thailands islands there was no regulated waste disposal. Thai people, mostly the owners of bungalow places or restaurants, would dig a hole in the ground, somewhere more or less out of sight, dump all the waste inside and light it up. Those slow-burning fires then stank for days or weeks. No other possibility to get rid of the waste because the local government would not care about and proper waste disposal did not exist for a very long time. From my point of view it's only partially a question if "better" tourists with more money would help. Mass tourism has left its wounds in the landscape and the clock can not be turned back. I know what i'm talking about because i first got to those islands in the 1980ies. First time in Koh Samui in 1980 and i can see the difference then and now. Who is to blame? The government? - the tourists? - the local people? I don't know. You could say in 1985 when i first got to Koh Phangan i was one of the gate openers for mass tourism that came to the islands later on and you are not wrong. So many beautiful places on this earth were discovered by bagpackers and then more and more people were attracted and mass tourism destroyed so much. In Koh Samui the big change slowly started with the construction of the airport which was completed in 1989. Before and after that for about one decade all Islands were a true paradise. I guess only after the year 2000 things got a lot worse and the islands, especially Koh Samui and later Koh Phangan on a lesser scale were flooded by mass tourism more and more. And then this c-problem came up and now very few farangs are in Thailand. Yes i know a lot of people are suffering because of covid. I feel pitty for them and it's sad to see all the empty places. But the c-problem at least gave nature a brake to recover a bit. Once Thailand fully opens up to tourism we will see how it will go on..... (sorry for lenghty and a little sad comment. i couln't help but write about)

As I have traveled around the US last year and this year I have asked different folks about the tourism and such. Some places have fared well and others not so well. This Friday I fly to Seattle for the weekend - mostly to see the mountains but also to try to see some Seattle sites. I am anticipating a fairly dreary Seattle adventure. We will see.
